    first post here, thought I'd jump in with a couple goodies along those mentioned already (ee cummings , Buk and Sherman Alexie triply so, though more a fan of Alexie's prose. Contrarily Bukowski's poems, which are basically prose, are better than his actual fiction.)

    @Renfield I came to this thread to second Charles Bukowski (Open All Night is a great career-spanning collection) and to denigrate his fiction, which I do not enjoy, and also to suggest Richard Brautigan and Pablo Neruda. Synchronicity!

    I also second Ranier Maria Rilke, as suggested above, if only so that you can say you've read Rilke.

    Since I've been pipped to the post on the above, I add that you should read:
    Jorge Luis Borges: His poetry is different from, but definitely as brilliant as, the fiction which may be more familiar to WC.
    Charles Baudelaire: Because life is incomplete until you have.
    Arthur Rimbaud: Je suis caché et je ne le suis pas. C'est le feu qui se relève avec son damné.

    rilke because he's excellent
    saul williams slam stuff before he became niggy tardust
    blake because he's the first comic book poet, and because he's better than all of us
    michaelangelo because his poetry is that of a catholic rumi
    georges bataille because it ties together his attempts at novels and philosophy
    kenneth patchen because he massacres all of the beat era american poets with his prodigious cock made of mad love and also does comic book poems
    nick tosches because he is the man
    most of the poets from the nuyorican cafe collection which was one of the places where slam poetry started up in new york and because there's a pretty damn good selection of street level stuff from a variety of late last century perspectives in it
    my ol' drinkin' buddy bojan louis, because he is the man
    michael gira because he writes better than most poets
    and all the other nerudas, brautigans, baudelaires, poes that everyone flogs when it comes to poims....
