Agree, Viceroy is a fucking idiot. If he thinks any Crossed, even a child, is no threat, let him get off the island and stay out in the wastelands. See how long he lasts.

Although the Crossed child in the cold freezing to death was a good touch. It reminded me of a rattlesnake. The kid was in dire straits, in rags and wounded. Probably had frostbite. And still could get the energy to attack. It's amazing, in a way.

The Gameskeeper...I have a feeling he's going to step too far, be too ruthless, and it will snap back at him. Sounding the alarm for the Crossed at the home was not a smart play. A lot more Crossed cound have swarmed the area and the group could have been found out. I think the Gameskeeper has proven himself too volatile. He knocked out the Pakistani kid to draw everyone out of the home. What if a Crossed had come across the boy, knocked out? The GK made him helpless. He needs to go.

It will be interesting if they reveal their stories in the next chapter. Viceroy will need to get 'smart' if hes going to survive, ditto Selene who seems a more likely candidate for death/infection.The Gamekeeper is, as Shaky says, a cunt but he has survived and helped the others survive too. Obviously he is not an altruistic man but as Shaky observes on the sortie, they have no leader so are weaker for that. If the GK is dead I hope his passing is pretty memorable. (The contrast between Viceroy and the GK shows the two extremes of behaviour. Viceroy could be a dark horse as mentioned earlier). I think Jackson is more spooked then he lets on and may well stay with the others for longer. Look forward to the next chapter.
On a side note, any feelings on the announced 'Patient Zero' story scheduled for Badlands#50?

Someone mentioned on the last thread a theory about the crossed virus inverting a person's character, making especially good people especially awful. This makes me wonder, if the gamekeeper became one of the crossed, would he become a decent sort of fellow?

It's sort of crazy to have a human that I find more repulsive in this story then the crossed. I mean, the crossed at least have an excuse for being terrifying and awful.

@No Fear You know, I am a little worried about that. For one thing, I think the mystery of the Crossed infection is a strength. Not having any idea what it is exactly(manmade virus, natural virus, some supernatural cause, etc) is a good thing. It adds to the weird and hopeless nature of the situation. Also, there is a simple logical reason: there cannot be a "patient zero" because it has been repeatedly established that the pandemic broke out all over the world simultaneously(for example, issue 2 of the original series where Randall talks about how the Canadians put their army on the border, thinking it was just an American problem, only to find out that the infection was already all over Canada).

If it's a virus, it could easily have been incubating for a while before it finally went full-cross. People getting aggressive, but not enough that they were being incarcerated. Going on airplanes, etc.

And the "patient zero" could easily be a localized patient zero.

We shall see!

Also, the crossing doesn't invert people so much as simply bring out the worst in them. Taking away all the little inhibitions that say "raping someone through the ear is wrong".

And also, yes. Crossed <del >Grounds</del>Gamekeeper <del >Willy</del> is hella scary. I think that was Sister Theresa in that rib that chased them on the first night out. Shaky recognised someone on that boat, and he lied when he said he couldn't see if they were crossed or not, because through those sights it was obvious. But I don't think she's crossed like the others, because the cross on her face goes like an "X" instead of +. She's probably trying to help the crossed or something stupid and Nunnish like that.

Whoever it was on the boat, I don't think we've seen the last of them, simply because of the "X" cross on the woman's face. Why was her cross different? It must be significant, because so far, the story's attention to detail has been pretty tight. And something must have happened between Shaky and the rest of the Gamekeeper's group, because none of them made it to Cava with him.
And the only thought was "I miss Theresa".

She's gone bad. I think, but not crossed. Mad, or bad enough for the rest of the crossed to give her a wide enough berth to avoid getting infected.

I think the whole thing with the X is a gigantic McGuffin and will not mean anything significant. She is definitely crossed whatever form the stigmata takes, after all not many people use a severed leg to abuse themselves with. The interesting thing is how she reached this point, and being in the same area as Shaky cant be a coincidence. As for whether she is some sort of 'super crossed' again I dont think that will be the case. I know that there have been some crossed who have shown rather more cunning/guile/intelligence then the others (Horsecock and the mother from 'Family Values' spring to mind) but I hope there are no more radical variants to the infection. After all, if you have super crossed who are worse then 'normal' crossed then the other end of the scale might suggest you have crossed who try and resist the infection. And I dont want them humanised at all.
Oh maybe someone could make a list of things we actually know about the crossed, in general, as seen in all the comics not just WYWH. Look forward to next weeks episode.

Ha ha, found it. Well, at least she seems to be happy. Now I know why Shaky wants to get off the Island.
As for your list No Fear, the crossed seem to become fixated on tasks. For most of them, the task seems to be sexual gratification or / and violence. But for the "supercrossed", like Ma Pratt, HorseCock, or Theresa, it seems they fixate on those they were close to, who never got crossed. In HorseCock's case, it's poor blind Kelly. Ma Pratt hunts down her Daughters.

So I'm thinking Shaky and Theresa must have been bumping uglies. I'll hazard a guess that the Gamekeeper puts the rape to Theresa, and when Shaky catches him in the act, he goes all "White Knight" and slots him. Then Theresa's long suppressed Catholic "fuck me" kicks in, and she gets a wide on for Shaky. Who bottles it, and spurns her because he's such an emotional cripple. So . . . . . . . and this is just speculation, Sister Theresa fucks everyone else in the GK Clan to death. I think she possibly bumps into Psycho Harold , who crosses her with some tit soup made from Lori's infected funbag.

I've pretty much decided the crossed pathogen was man made. This is because it appears to have pretty much simultaneously started at the same time globally. I think it works rather in the same way as 'rabies' in that the victims develop an irresistable compulsion to do certain things - avoid water, bite, rape, torture, kill.

It doesn't really matter because the scenario is all about exploring the nature of evil / morality. The 'joke' is that the Crossed are mere cyphers. They cannot possibly be evil because they are in the grip of a horrible illness. They have no 'mens rea'. It's how the survivors cope with the desperate situations they find themselves in that makes this series so interesting.

'Does that make them worse then the crossed?'

To some extent, yes, it does make them worse. However, the extreme situations they find themselves in can provide a form of 'defence'. For example in the first arc Stan & Cindy kill the cannibal children. Was this 'evil'? It's debatable. That's an really interesting moment because it asks the question 'what is evil'? On the other hand the Game Keeper's shameless sexual exploitation of Agnes is clearly transgressive.

And GK effectively murdered/tortured/worse the old people by deliberately drawing the crossed in, all because he wanted Theresa to join the party. Putting aside the probable truth of what he said about the oldsters being a liability etc, to my mind it does make him as bad as the crossed. I had expected him to kill them himself, getting the crossed involved was infinitely worse (and as someone said above could have easily led to the group being caught as well).
Im really looking forward to finding out the eventual fate of GK and what happened to Theresa. Im betting GK gets his cock bitten off, which would be poetic justice. But whether he is dead remains to be seen.

It amuses me when people try to logically analyze comics as if there is some immutable reality inherent to a fictional universe.

Best of luck with your psychological studies, scientific analysis, and scholarly research on Crossed history. But, frankly, it seems like a lot more fun to just go along for the ride!

And a hell of a ride it's been already (thanks Si!). Can't wait to find out what's up with Theresa and her Xed face. Also curious to see just how far Shaky has gone (and will go) given his conclusion that taking advantage is the key to survival!

I've been trying to work out the origins of the crossed, and I'm afraid it all seems to have started in some dark, foetid corner of Garth Ennis's diseased imagination. Then it was passed to David Lapham, and now, Si. Whether setting it down in these gloriously sick stories is a kind of therapy remains to be seen. I just hope that exposure to the details isn't contagious. Because, yanno, in that case, we're all pretty fuckered. Maybe the final episode will trigger the pathogen in everyone who's been exposed to the story. If so, thanks a bunch guys. Time will tell.

Just saw your Youtube interview at the comic convention, Si. For some reason, I expected that you would be older. Maybe it's your name. 'Si' feels like an old man name to me, for some reason. Pleasantly surprised.

Will be picking up WYWH and Crossed Badlands on Amazon when Badlands comes out on Nov. 6. Want to get them both at the same time so I don't have to order twice. Would actually prefer to wait until Crossed TP 5 comes out as well and get 3 at the same time, but that one's not coming until next fucking year. You need to do your part and light a fire under somebody's ass, man.

And question...

I am very excited to see that Garth Ennis is doing live action Crossed. Are you or Lapham going to be submitting any episode ideas,or is this a Ennis beast all the way through?

This arc will tie in to issue 50, which Christensen refers to “Patient Zero,” spotlighting when the outbreak initially started."

So... we maybe have a look of how the infection started...
