“We were in the gym, and I heard really loud bangs,'’ said the boy, as he stood shivering and weeping outside the school with his father’s draped around him. “We thought that someone was knocking something over. And we heard yelling and we heard gunshots. We heard lots of gunshots. We heard someone say, ‘Put your hands up.’ I heard, ‘Don’t shoot.’ We had to go into the closet in the gym. Then someone came and told us to run down the hallway. There were police at every door, there were lots of people crying and screaming.'’

    NYTimes ongoing coverage.

I'm trying to stay up-to-date on this, but I hit that paragraph and am dangerously close to sobbing at work.

It's going to be an interesting few weeks in the American media.

Yeah, I think I can imagine pretty well how a kid in this situation can feel. I don't need CNN interviewing them to know exactly how scared they are.

Not that it matters but tomorrow is the 221st anniversary of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

    Jesus.

And brother of shooter either dead or in custody, dang Reuters, get it together.
I would also prefer it if you could not take videos or pictures of the students, thanks. That seems kind of inappropriate.

    (P.S.: what? I mean I'll do my best ... )

@Oldhat, the NYTimes is reporting that the shooter's mother was a teacher at the school and he shot her in her classroom before shooting the children in her classroom.

The gunman, who was believed to be in his 20s, walked into a classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School where his mother was a teacher. He shot and killed her and then shot 18 students in the classroom. He also shot five other adults, and then killed himself inside the school. Various news outlets identified the shooter as Ryan Lanza. The shooting ranks among the worst in recent United States history.

All right, the suspect appears to be named Adam Lanza, not Ryan :

    According to AP

The suspect in the Connecticut school shootings is Adam Lanza, 20, the son of a teacher at the school where the shootings occurred, a law enforcement official said Friday. A second law enforcement official says the boy's mother, Nancy Lanza, is presumed dead.

Adam Lanza's older brother, Ryan, 24, of Hoboken, N.J., is being questioned by police, said the first official. Earlier, a law enforcement official mistakenly transposed the brothers' first names.

Mike Huckabee classily blames the shooting on removing God from schools and simultaneously makes me glad he didn't get the GOP nomination back in 2008 while making me wish I had the ability to light people on fire by will alone.

One of the Fox stations blamed videogames within 10 minutes of the story breaking. Based off the facebook page of the brother they named incorrectly as the shooter.

Somehow I doubt we can expect any kind of retraction.

The deadliest mass murder in a school in U.S. history took place in Bath Township, Michigan in 1927. Damn those videogames...

I'm not surprised there's a petition to arm every teacher. I'm surprised there isn't one to arm the children.
