IN 1942, Calvin Graham, 12 years old, lied about his age and joined the Navy, he was...

The Boy Who Became a World War II Veteran at 13 Years Old
It wasn’t uncommon for boys to lie about their age in order to serve. Ray Jackson, who joined the Marines at 16 during World War II, founded the group Veterans of Underage Military Service in 1991, and it listed more than 1,200 active members, including 26 women.

Let me be the first to point out that the world's still here. It's mid-morning in Sydney and quite a nice day. If you happen to know any Mayans, a new calendar would make an ideal Christmas gift.

A good hour past midnight here in Blighty, and as we insist on making everyone believe that GMT is the only timezone that matters, I think we can safely say our fucked up world continues to exist.

    Mildly disappointed actually.

Oh please, the exact moment of the solstice is where the smart apocalypse money is. That's not until 11:12am GMT.

I'll be huddling in my bunker with a shotgun and a copy of the Popul Vuh until then.

    (Figuratively speaking)

(By which I mean I won't actually be doing anything of the sort)

11.12am GMT? That's just after I start my eye test and my pupils will be dilating nicely. Let's hope it's not too bright, eh?

Nothing we don't know but, I think; an important read none-the-less

Why the US media ignored Murdoch's brazen bid to hijack the presidency

Something to think about, and that may change the way we view intelligence. I suspect this is going to ruffle a number of feathers among people I know ...

    IQ ‘a myth,’ study says

Other bits of interest from the article...
    Among the study’s other findings:

    • While aging has a detrimental effect on reasoning and short-term memory, it leaves verbal abilities “completely unimpaired.”

    • Smoking has a negative impact on verbal abilities and short-term memory but does not affect reasoning skills.

    • People who play video games performed “significantly better” in terms of both reasoning and short-term memory.

    • Products that are advertised to improve brain function aren’t effective. “People who ‘brain-train’ are no better at any of these three aspects of intelligence than people who don’t,” Owen said.

People can still take the tests at Owen said he hopes that 1 million people across the globe will eventually participate.

@ Seantaclaus: Add to that the Flynn Effect and IQ scores become even more of a crock.

As for the high-IQ, circle-jerk club which calls itself Mensa - I so hope this is true - originally, they were going to call themselves "Mens", based on the latin for "mind", until someone pointed out that name might attract a totally different special interest group. So they went with "Mensa" instead, meaning "table"; an apparently irony-free way of representing how they "come together in a round-table meeting of equals."

Give me QI over IQ every time.

    'Satanic' Christmas Lights Anger Town

Of course the locals would pull the "A child might ask 'is Satan really there' ?" argument... It's astounding the number of things people want to ban so they don't have to talk to their kids.

What's next? Having to talk to your kids about the gays?
Or Megatron? Oh God! Will my toaster turn into a monster robot that will kill me?

Newscasts like that make Sizer cry...

If you've scared the fuck out of your kids in the first place with stories about Satan I don't see why you shouldn't reap what you've sown...
