Also horrifying is the knowledge that science is working on machines which can read people's minds.

I think it is/will be an amazing scientific achievement, and possibly the gateway to a more mature understanding of the brain (and, perhaps even more interesting, of the mind).

And I also think that some of the eventual applications of it (mind-machine interfaces, allowing the physically and mentally disabled to communicate, memory storage, and a whole host of other things you could speculate about) will be of great benefit to humanity.

But between those two thoughts is an awareness that, knowing the way the military-industrial complex tends to go, the first practical application of this technology is probably going to be in some CIA black site, where a "terrorist suspect" will to have their mind probed until there's nothing left.

India textbook says meat-eaters lie and commit sex crimes
Meat-eaters "easily cheat, lie, forget promises and commit sex crimes", according to a controversial school textbook available in India.
New Healthway, a book on hygiene and health aimed at 11 and 12 year-olds, is printed by one of India's leading publishers.

Growing concerns over ‘in the air’ transmission of Ebola
Canadian scientists have shown that the deadliest form of the ebola virus could be transmitted by air between species.
In experiments, they demonstrated that the virus was transmitted from pigs to monkeys without any direct contact between them.
The researchers say they believe that limited airborne transmission might be contributing to the spread of the disease in some parts of Africa.
They are concerned that pigs might be a natural host for the lethal infection.

    @ icelandbob

Who is the guy doing the reporting? One thing I found interesting was his take on Guy Fawkes - and his apparent ignorance of the Guy Fawkes' masks role in V for Vendetta, which is a far more likely source of inspiration for Anonymous than the actual Guy Fawkes.

Foamhead - I actually know that guy, he's from near where I used to live in Cornwall. It's not so much the wanking in slurry that's the problem, more that it's the SAME family's farm that he keeps doing it at, and he's also vandalised a load of their stuff and set their barn on fire. Weird chap, he needs some help.

Anyway, I came here to post this:

Dateline: Mars - Curiosity finds... something?

Short version: Curiosity's sample analysis instrument (SAM) has found something that's "big news", but the science team are waiting for confirmation before saying what.

Shrtr vrsn: Hopefully not another NASA balls-up.
