That butter Ad.... instant heart attack....

That's like those old adverts of Doctors recommending certain brands of cigarettes,
    because that's what they smoked!

I'd like to say I'd totally know it at the time that it was a gag but I'm probably lying to myself right now.

@Wood: Damn, that's mean. I am curious if there was anyone who didn't fall for it.

i always think if anything like that were to happen to me i would automatically think " i'm on scare tactics"

If something like that happened to me, there's the distinct possibility that I'd lose it and attack the girl in sheer animalistic panic.

They must take that kind of reaction into account when setting these things up - but I can't imagine how.

(Sidenote: Autocorrect tried to make that 'sheer cannibalistic panic' - not quite what I meant... :) )

Which nearly happened with this previous example:

And the camera crew were right there in that case.

And the probably inspirational Japanese example, which features chair-throwing and slamming-against-the-wall panic:

    @ oxbrow

See, that's the thing that gets me about these shows, especially the less carefully controlled shows. When faced with fear or danger, some people keep calm, others retreat, other panic. But some people react to fear with aggression. They attack and try to destroy the object of their fear. I wonder how funny that Japanese show would've been if that kid had straight up smashed chairs into the "ghosts."

Not to mention the health and legal ramifications of traumatising people. What happens if a victim keels over with a heart attack, or develops PTSD? I seem to recall Scare Tactics got itself sued over an alien abduction prank in the first season, though I don't know what the outcome was.

The OSS Simple Sabotage Field Manual

I think a great many people have assimilated this particular bit:

    Page 28
    (11) General Interference with Organizations and Production
    (a) Organizations and Conferences
    (1) Insist on doing everything through "channels." Never permit short-cuts to be taken in order to expedite decisions.
    (2) Make "speeches" Talk as frequently as possible and at great length. Illustrate your "points" by long anecdotes and accounts of personal experiences. Never hesitate to make a few
    appropriate "patriotic"-comments.
    (3) When possible, refer all matters to committees, for "further study and consideration." Attempt to make the committees as large as possible - never less than five.
    (4) Bring up irrelevant issues as frequently as possible.
    (5) Haggle over precise wordings of communications, minutes, resolutions.
    (6) Refer back to matters decided upon at the last meeting and attempt to re-open the question of the advisability of that decision.
    (7) Advocate "caution." Be unreasonable and urge your fellow-conferees to be "reasonable" and avoid haste which might result in embarrassments or difficulties later on.
    (8) Be worried about the propriety of any decision - raise the question of whether such action as is contemplated lies within the jurisdiction of the group or whether it might conflict with the policy of some higher echelon.

That ghost prank is totally in keeping with what I saw of the cruelty of Brazilian prank TV shows. One guy was nearly killed by people because he faked a mugging on the streets of Sao Paolo. In another he would ask someone to hold the bottom of a ladder while he climbed up it and then fart in their faces. One guy pulled the ladder out from under him. That little girl is lucky they chose docile victims for this prank.
