I've been trying to come up with an alias for selling prints my art. I don't want to use my real name (which is common enough anyway). I was thinking of using my mother's maiden name as my last name, but that's too common (and links back to me), as does my first and middle name. So far the best I've come up with is "Renee Boda" and "Renee Ondine". I'm leaning towards "Renee Ondine", partially for the mythological reference (water spirit, and often water spirits are shape shifters), and partially because there isn't anyone named Renee Ondine showing up on google (there is a poem named Ondine by Renee Vivien, but I would think that shouldn't be a problem, especially since the poem was written in 1901).

Hey guys, suffered Total Laptop Death last night. (If you want to diagnose, it's an Acer Aspire failing to load anything and making two quiet beeps; definitely some hard-drive clicking. Gonna rip it apart and wiggle stuff later, but I think it's gone.)

I haven't paid attention to technical specs in a really long time (like, when a Pentium 3 was kind of a big deal), so what I need from you guys is specific suggestions of brands and models I should check out. My budget is about $700, max; preferably $400-500.

Option 1: Custom Desktop + Tablet
This is only going to work if I can score a $200-ish 10"+ tablet, for note-taking/bus-reading/etc, and then build a desktop for $300-400. I can get components pretty cheap, apparently, through my campus computer store, so I might go that way to custom-assemble something. Otherwise, I think because I'm short on time, I'll probably go ...

Option 2: Laptop.
I don't have any clue what's on the market out there, but preferably something large-ish but still light enough to be carted around. I don't even know what battery life is like these days, but anything's better than what I had. Who's even making good machines these days? HP, Dell, Toshiba?

Needs: Not much. Don't really game. Heaviest processing is Adobe CS stuff, maybe some video rendering down the line. Don't need much more than 100gb internal, either. Mostly I want cheap, durable, dependable, NOT top-of-the-line.
Sticking with Windows. I may even still have an unused copy of Vista in storage (don't mock! Any Windows OS I can roll back to functioning like 98 is just fine by me). Otherwise I'd maybe be willing to go the Linux route for a desktop.


Uh, ask if you need more specific information. I was running a Vista machine with 2GB RAM and a 100GB hard drive and was pretty happy with it. Just lost the majority of my admittedly pitiful toolbox after discovering a long-term leak in the closet where my hot water boiler lives. The box itself was filled with water (even the clip-lock plastic partition sections) and things which weren't rusted to ruination were covered in a delightful layer of black mold (yeah, I access that closet a lot), so most of it has been binned.

So, while I gradually replace everything on an emergency "shit, I need a screwdriver/hacksaw/pair of pliers NOW!" basis, can anyone please recommend one of the above-named doohickeys which I can cluelessly fumble around with in the meantime?

I don't need one Bear Grylls or Ray Mears carry around while trying to survive on the surface of the sun but, equally, I could do with a model which won't fall to bits the first time I try to use it.

However, I am hardcore geek in this particular aspect, so my view may be a bit tainted, never mind that I am willing to devote the time necessary to get the most out of this solution.

It is worth noting that no matter how you try and swing it a desktop + tablet solution is never going to fulfill the needs of having a mobile workstation the way that a laptop can. Unfortunately, I am not as up on laptops as I am on desktops, so I cannot give you specific advice on which device to chose. Even if I could, nothing beats doing the research yourself. The only time I've ever seen one get damaged was about 2am when we'd been shooting since the previous morning. For some reason we'd run out of power leads and someone had decided to hook a fairly major lamp into a 10 amp household extension cord, which duly melted. One very desperate and exhausted tech decided that seeing as we only had one pick-up shot left he'd just whack another plug on it and punch on. "That's live," I said as he got out his Leatherman. "No it ain't," he replied. Then the blade evaporated in a 2-foot plume of sparks as he cut into a very live 240v line.

I don't know how he wasn't hurt, but apart from damage to his pride and his multitool no harm was done. As for hardware, if you're looking for not-top-of-the-line you'd probably be content with not-state-of-the-art... i.e. used. People who are dumping 3-year-old computers as "obsolete" are often willing to part with them for very little money. With a used laptop you should probably assume that the battery is running out of power cycles/capacity, but if you budget $50 or so for a third-party replacement, you could end up with a decent machine with good battery life.

A laptop that I personally like is the Lenovo Thinkpad X61, which is fairly light, has a respectable Core2 Duo CPU, and (something very handy with those Adobe apps) built-in Wacom stylus support for the screen: a poor man's Cintiq. The main down-side is the 12" screen. You can pick one up used in decent condition for around $200. I have an 11" MacBook Air for portable use. It weighs virtually nothing but has a useable keyboard so beats out a tablet for my purposes. I mostly use that for correspondence, ideas notation on the hoof, making notes on whatever I'm reading, and last-minute panic tweaks to image files that are being submitted. I've recently cut a vast amount of sugar and salt out of my diet for the sake of my little girl though (then I snuck a whack of sugar back in by starting homebakes, but never mind). The biggest single reduction I managed after home-baked bread was from tea and coffee - experiment to see how little you can get away with without wincing. I'm down to sugar-free coffee and a half a spoon in my tea, saving me about ten or twelve heaped spoons of sugar every day. For breakfast cereal, porridge only takes five minutes or so to cook as well, and it's not bad at all even without sugar.

Anyway, I, and most people I know, drink tea without sugar and the thought of it is kind of repellent to me. I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it. Similarly most of the older generation round here (Scotland) would happily tell you that putting sugar in porridge is sacrilege, you should be using salt.

Which seems really odd.

Interestingly I remember reading somewhere that switching from sugar to sweeteners can have an oddly negative effect as your body gradually forgets to associate sweetness with calories so when you do eat the occasional sugary item it has a much greater effect than it would otherwise. Or something. I don't think you're talking about losing weight though so that shouldn't matter. (Found it: http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19726435.500-sweetener-may-be-worse-for-dieters-than-sugar.html but take it with a grain of salt (like your porridge), it's just a report on research, not conclusive.)

It's sort of hard to get a fix on the numbers for something like this but, after a bit of discussion, I'd speculate 1-2 in 10. I take my regular tea with cream, have been looking into alt fruit-flavoured teas for no sugar/no dairy. I have been crazy over drinking black currant teas (especially if it's mixed with a black tea, so it has proper caffeine in it) or anise teas when I don't need caffeine.

I put maple syrup in my oatmeal, cocoa powder too. Agave I've used in teas and coffee with no problems. And honestly, as you cut back and deal with the initial cravings (and it will be a bitch, honestly) you'll eventually become more sensitive to sugars that you don't have to put as much in your foods/drinks anymore. I realized this the other day when my mother and I had the same iced coffee and to her it was just "a little bit sweet" and to me it was undrinkably sweet.

I'm wary of the fake sugars, especially aspartame. A friend of mine had been sick for a long while, but when her nutritionist suggested she cut out the aspartame, all of her symptoms went away. I'm assuming that the doctor meant refined sugars. I'm not generally that good about eating fruit, but I'd assume that my doctor would love it if I ate fruit on a regular basis. My mom and I actually have some black currant tea (which has the black tea in it), and it's great stuff.

I think I'm going to go with Agave and see how that affects things, and then maybe try something stricter if the doctor tells me it's not good enough. I try my best to avoid fake sugars as a)They taste nasty and b)I've heard of how bad for you the fake sugars are anyway. Interestingly, another of the sugar alternatives at the co-op was straight up fructose and palm sugar. (Sugar derived from palm oil?)

And I love hearing how people drink their tea, especially since in California, the number of people who were horrified that I put milk in my tea was actually kind of high. I guess since it's a little off topic, I could create a new hashtag for it? I suppose I actually enjoy it when topics get derailed, but I'm one of those people who enjoy meandering conversations.

I also drink Earl Grey once a week, and I put milk in that too - I know you're not really supposed to, but I also know that Stephen Twining (yes, that Twining) takes milk in his Lapsang Souchong, and if that goes, anything does. It's pretty shitty to be honest, but it's a post-therapy ritual.

Matters for further contention:

If the tea is made in a teapot, should milk be added to the cup before or after the tea?
If it's made in a cup, should the teabag be removed before or after the milk goes in?

Ostfriesen tea is really too strong and bitter to be drunk straight - I say this as a former coffee shop worker who loves espresso straight. Since then, I've gone on to pretty much drink it 'builder's tea' style, when I can't get rock sugar ('kluntjes').

My other favorite tea is lapsang souchong, and again...really not meant to be drunk straight. Things are still a bit raw with my ex, we've had to delete each other from social media because the evidence of one of us having fun turns the other to misery. BUT - We started off as best friends, and despite the odds, would want to one day be able to be friends again. But that's not going to happen if we completly cut off contact with each other (also living in different places now).

So I proposed the idea of some sorta two-player turn-based email/post/website game/art-challenge. Something where we don't have to talk about our personal lives until we finally feel comfortable.

I've searched around for the right activity but come up blank, there's game-by-post chess/strategy/rpg eItc but really something les technical and competitive and more fun and creative is what I'm looking for.

I know the whole thing is a long-shot doomed to failure but I've got to try something, instead of just sitting back and letting us turn into strangers.

Any ideas?

TL;DR Fun, creative, uncomplicated correspondence game for two people who take turns that can last from a minute to a month.

If you're a complete beginner, then one of those "Web Design for Dummies", or "Learn HTML in 24 hours" books is a great way to show you the basics of how to build a website. You can then move on to online resources that will teach you how to build a good website.

Your ISP may provide you with some hosting space along with your account - although I believe that's rarer these days than it used to be. But if your ultimate aim is setting up a professional looking site you'll probably need to pay for proper hosting. You can get ridiculously cheap hosting in the US, and point a local web address at it with no problems (I seem to recall you're a fellow Aussie, right?).

.au domain names can generally be had for about $99.00 a year. If it's a .com.au you're after you'll need to provide an ABN and a justification as to what the domain name has to do with your business. We had a visiting artist at my old college that said he went in and told galleries something like, "I was wondering if you know any galleries in the area that might be interested in showing my work." He figured he wouldn't ask them to actually show the work themselves, due to that being a bad first impression. But he noted their reaction upon seeing it, making note of the ones that seemed to like it. Everyone told him to go to one particular place, which wound up being his main gallery. I think he had to go see the gallery owner on his deathbed or something.

This is just the most memorable answer to this question I remember hearing. I would say, ask whoever is working how people get shown there. Every place is a little different. And if you know anyone who's shown somewhere you'd like to be shown, ask them how they managed it. Be sure to look and see what sort of art the galleries show. If they show stuff that is similar to what you want to show, you'll be more likely to get a yes. I'm planning to make a webcomic with a friend, hopefully starting sometime next year. We feel like we have a good, original idea, and I'll do the art for her scripts. Thing is - I've been doing abstract mixed media almost exclusively for 15 years, and have been struggling at improving my realistic drawing for about a year now. My mixed media work is good, but no one's buying it, and the thought of working the gallery scene makes me want to hide under the bed. I've loved comics since... since my earliest memories, so the thought of telling stories with my brilliant friend feels like home; thus the career redirection. I know I'll suck at it for a while, and am trying not to be depressed about being bad at art again. I've been bad at it before, and got better, so presumably can do so again. And I still have all the aesthetic knowledge I've built over the years to help me along.

To the point, I can't afford to go back to school for sequential art classes, so was wondering if y'all could direct me to some good self-education resources - books, websites, instructional videos, anything to help me train myself in panel composition, drawing characters consistently, working with color in Photoshop, etc. including all those things I need to know but haven't even though of yet. I can draw well enough that the subject is identifiable as itself, so I'm not starting from scratch, but I've still got a lot of work to do before it looks beautiful or professional. It seems so far that my biggest specific hurdle is going to be making characters look like themselves at all angles. Any help would be awesome, because my friend and I are going to do this foolish thing whether I'm ready or not.

It's a forum frequented by people doing the same sort of thing... a mix of writers, artists, and writer/artists – including both "names" and nobodies such as myself – which grew out of the creator community that developed at Warren's The Engine back in the day. I've found it an invaluable place to get feedback and motivation.

As for the craft, it's hard to know what to suggest without knowing what your weak points are, but How To Draw Comics the Marvel Way is a surprisingly helpful how-to book on figure drawing for comics. There's an Asus EEE PC X101CH going for sale pretty cheaply at a nearby store ($240), but reviews for it seemed mixed at best with the big message being not great battery life and no upgrading options if shit goes down.

Thoughts? I don't know how to take care of my things, but I did some preliminary Googling and discovered that I need to condition the leather before I wear it, and then need to condition it every so often. I am also interested in waterproofing to keep the leather in good shape.

Does anyone know about caring for FINE LEATHER GOODS or have any good online resources? I want to get good milage out of these babies, so any and all tips are welcome.

I asked my family originally but everything they told me seemed ineffectual but when I happened to see a shoe shiner in Paddington station, I stopped and got my shoes shined then asked him loads of questions. Each time I got a new pair of shoes, I went and got my shoes shined then asked him. It's been a couple of years since I saw him last but I got a new pair of boots for Christmas so I'll be going to see him again.

The Leather Spa is where my friends with super fancy shoes take their for repair/conditioning. Angelo's Leather Care is a place I've had bookmarked as another possibility (also it's at 666 5th ave, so I think it's funny). Most people say you can DIY your own shoe conditioning. The biggest thing is to make sure that if they get wet/dirty, to clean them off well and let them dry WITHOUT heat. And don't dump them near heat sources. It'll warp the leather.

I'd check the website for your shoe company to see if they have a FAQ about caring for them. The Fluevog site has a fantastic basic care run down list here and if you go to their FAQ > About repairs there's a secondary chunk of information about what you should or should not use on your leather based on the type of leather your shoe is made of.

If all else fails, I'd honestly just go to a local boutique for your shoe's designer (assuming they're that kind of shoe) and just ask the salespeople. At first I thought that I had simply forgotten to power it down but then just a little while ago I was sitting on my couch reading and the lights on it came on. I opened it up and it was going through the start-up screen. It seems to be random times (sometimes at night, sometimes during the day) and I don't see anything in my scheduled tasks that would have it start automagically. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong area, maybe it's something else.
Any ideas? Any details that you need to help me fix this?

So, I have started working on the website, this time with wordpress. (Yay!) And while wordpress is really a blogging platform, I know it can be used to make a fairly decent website. However there is still the matter of selling the art. I am now finding that setting up pages for selling stuff is hard and/or expensive (fancier, more expensive plans). Or maybe I just don't know much of anything. So here I am asking the clever people who actually have experience doing this sort of stuff. Are there tools or versions of wordpress that don't require coding smarts to create pages that people can buy things on? Would I be better off directing links that say "buy me" or something to that sort to an etsy page? There are store front plugins you can use to set up shop pages in wordpress. eShop was the one highly recommended to us but there are plenty of others. I found these highly annoying from a UI standpoint because it seems like it works better for sites that will be dedicated storefronts instead as a small part of the overarching site of blog entries and galleries and whatnots.

With my boss, we eventually shifted over to Etsy. Etsy has also been providing amazing shipping tools combined with the USPS - you can basically print an international label complete with customs form and dump that into a mailbox, no standing in lines to get it stamped for approval. Life is amazing now. There are also a bunch of softwares available that work with Etsy to keep track of supplies inventory and expenses and whatnots if you look into 3rd party stuff. I know people have had their issues with them, but they're doing a really good job at this point.

Also WoL seems moderately unlikely. It requires a specially formatted packet to be sent explicitly to that PC. It's not something that's likely to happen by accident. Unless your PC's directly connected to your internet connection (no router) and your ISP does some weird stuff. Which is possible.

The only time I had this happening it was a scheduled task, but you've already ruled that out. Make sure you've checked the default windows scheduled tasks (one level deeper than the user ones, iirc) and have a look at your virus checker, make sure it's not scheduled for an over-night scan or something.

Perhaps your power is fluctuating and the PC's set in the BIOS to return to power on when power comes back on? A few years ago I had a DIY website made from personalised wordpress with Paypal buttons stitched in, and while I'm very proud of that site, I shudder to think how much time I spent just trying to out-stare those bloody CSS pages. I had the computer turned off, I unplugged it for a little while then plugged it back in to see if that had it turn on, but it doesn't so I don't think it's the power thing that Fixzr thought of.
It doesn't appear to be the virus scanner. Which I have ran to see if it's a netbot but it's not finding anything...

Maybe I'll pick up an external hard drive, back everything up and try a fresh start... Something very strange has happened with my car. A few days ago, I started hearing an odd clicking sound from my car's engine while it was running. It seemed to be perfectly matched to the RPMs I was running, so I had to be hearing something going on with the engine, but no dashboard lights were on. I pop the hood and take a look. There is a thin layer of oil splattered on top of the engine block and, inexplicably, the oil cap was missing. Turns out the sound I'm hearing is the chain that runs through the oil tank.

So, car folks, any idea what could cause an oil cap to pop off or crack? I'm planning on getting a replacement, but I want to know if this is the sort of thing that could happen again. Best thing to do in the short term is to get the oil changed properly at a garage that knows what they're doing. I've got an idea for a webseries, but it means I have to build the canopy of a "spaceship" and I have no idea how to actually build anything.
What i want is the cockpit of one man ship, like a Star Wars X-wing fighter or BSG Viper, that I can put an actor in and then shoot a profile shot of.
I'm thinking I just need to build a transparent canopy and a bit of the ship (like 6-12 inches below the canopy) and then have the actor enter the set from below.
Anyone have any idea where to start with this?

But a bucket-type seat with a four point harness, out of a car from a scrapyard would do the job too, Build a wooden frame, stick a seat in there, and add a load of instrumentation - probably also available from the scrapyard.

One other idea would be to go for a couple of ipads as finger-on-glass type instruments attached to your frame - you could put some simple animations on them or images of FOG instruments - and a game joystick in the middle, or buy/borrow old instruments and mix the two together. Maybe a couple of banks of illuminated switches too.

Now, there's a big hairy pile of photos online which would be ideal, but I'm fairly sure that wouldn't be Fair Use, and CC asks that I credit the original artist if I modify, which would look a bit clunky written on a print. I'm projecting the images, so I can't really say they're just reference either. I'm trying to get a Colorspan Giclée Printmaker FA drum printer c.1998 up and running, because it can do things that newer printers can't. The RIP keeps telling me it can't print due to "Ink Mismatch" but I'm certain the inks and profilers I have are a) genuine and b) as functional as can be expected under the circumstances. The manual I have is the operating manual for the printer, and the troubleshooting guide seems not to be online anymore.

Does anyone here have either some experience with these old monsters or a copy of the troubleshooting guide? The way I've done it, although I can't remember if my shots turned out terribly well, is to put the camera in spot or centre weighted metering, set the exposure compensation to +2 and then meter off the brightest part of the snow. So, if you're using centre weighted you point the middle 1/4 or so of the viewfinder at the bright bit and then either hit the exposure lock button or switch to manual exposure and set it to the values given by the meter.

This technique works for just about anything. White is about +2, the palm of your hand is about +1, middle grey (whatever that is) is 0 and black is about -2. I've used it to photograph photos of stage productions using spot metering, although with my Nikon dslr camera white tended to be nearer +2.6.

Of course, after posting I just realised you're talking about processing, not shooting. I should have spotted that from the hashtag really...

Ahhhh, thanks all! I have been shooting with just the auto-no-flash setting on my crappy DSLR (if I use manual with my current lens it often refuses to focus? I don't know. I hate the lens that came with my camera but it's the only wide angle lens I have so far). Masking things out seems to be working the best. I did a quick and dirty job with the shadow/highlighting tool and have been playing around with some of the curves. I tried the HDR but it made things look a weeeeeeeee bit too plastic, but I might come back to it later if I feel like it.

I don't know if either would be to your taste, but whenever people ask me for book recommendations my go to titles are Resurrection Day by Brendan DuBois and The Guns of the South by Harry Turtledove. The first is a mystery/thriller set in a third (or at least second) world United States ten years after the Cuban Missile Crisis turned into an all out nuclear war. The second explores what happens when time-traveling white supremacists change the course of the American Civil War by supplying the Confederacy with AK-47s.

Of the ones I read, the one who posts the most about drugstore makeup is Musings of a Muse, which has well well written reviews, but aside from the terrible blog name, doesn't have the best product photos. There's always a shadow going across the bottom of her face, so it's hard to see how they actually go on the face.

The rest of the ones I read are good for makeup ideas and tips in general, as well as swatches of products, but they tend to be geared towards more expensive makeup like MAC and stuff from Sephora.

I like using brushes to apply foundation. They can be expensive, but I've found that it's a great investment. That said, if you find that you can blend it well enough with your fingers so it doesn't look streaky, there's no need to splurge on them. I use this brush to apply and buff in my foundation.

I will also vouch for Maybelline as a good drugstore brand. I've never used their mouse, but I've used their FitMe! concealer and the BB cream (which is really just a tinted SPF moisturizer), as well as various eyeliners and mascaras and they're all really good.

Also, if you tend to get oily, as I do, you'll want either a translucent setting powder or a pressed or loose powder in the same color as your foundation to apply on top. You just need a little bit, so it doesn't look cakey, but it'll help set everything so it lasts longer and will also absorb some oil (if you have dry skin, skip this step since it can make dry patches more visible). If you ever do SFX makeup for Halloween or a cosplay or zombiewalk or anything - always always always translucent setting powder on top. It just locks everything in. For this, you'll want either a big fluffy brush or a powder puff to apply. For general use, I prefer the brushes so it doesn't go on heavy, but if you do makeup with delicate detail, say sugar skill makeup, then you'll want a puff so that the brush strokes don't rub your makeup. It's happened to me before T__T

Also, if you're going the drugstore makeup route, look in various stores to check out their selection. My local grocery store has some stuff but the selection is otherwise teeny tiny, while a different drugstore down the street has a rather large makeup selection.

I do. It's not really important, but I find it helps makeup go on a bit smoother, and also keeps it together a bit longer. Like I mentioned, I have very oily skin, so anything I can do to make it last longer and look smoother and more natural helps. Also, I tend to only use it when I'm getting properly "made up." If I'm just using a tinted moisturizer for day-to-day stuff, I skip it. However, I find eyeshadow to be imperative. Again, oily eyelids, and even if you don't have oily lids it just helps colors pop a little more. Eye primer is the difference between my eye shadow creasing and rubbing off naturally from blinking within a few hours, and being able to fall asleep in it and still have it look good the next morning.

here's my routine.

MORNING
Wash face with warm water and gentle cleanser, pat dry
Use a gentle, well hydrating moisturizer
Apply topical antibiotic & spot treat zits with benzoyl peroxide
Either: tinted moisturizer with SPF or regular moisturizer with SPF
Pat ~3 drops argan oil over face
NOTE: I use a retinoid at night which can dry out this skin, which is why I apply moisturizer twice. You might be able to skip this and just go with whichever facial sunscreen you want.

Makeup: for regular days (ie not getting "madeup), possibly some light eye makeup and blush to accentuate features or look more awake, concealer if some spots are super red.

I can do a "getting made up" makeup post if people are really interested, or even a video, but since I'm focusing on skincare I'll skip that for now. I will add right now, though, that I wash my foundation and concealer brushes after every use, so they don't collect bacteria. Powder brushes I wash once a week to get pigment and dust off.

Throughout Day
Blot with oil blotting sheets as necessary, since I am an oily mess

NIGHT
If necessary, remove eye makeup with coconut oil & cotton pad
Wash face with warm water and gentle cleanser, pat dry
Moisturize
Pat ~3 drops argan oil over face
If retinoid night, wait at least half our, then apply retinoid

General Notes
- I've learned that simplifying my routine works best. I used to use toners for my oily skin, but I've learned that I do well without them, and that sometimes I do even better since they can overdry the skin (many have alcohol as a main ingredient). Also, now that I'm using a topical anitbiotic and a retinoid for my acne, I don't need products with salicylic acid in them. Again, in my case simple and gentle is currently the best route. Also I no longer do physical exfoliation since the retinoid takes care of that for me.

- Argan oil is aaaamazing. It has omega 3s and other fatty acids that are good for the skin, so it helps nourish it. Also, if you apply it over a moisturizer after you've let it sink in, it locks in that moisture. It's great for any skin type, whether dry or oily.

- Makeup doesn't make me break out any more than normal as long as I wash it off at night, though this is partly because modern foundations aren't terribly heavy anymore. You can get really good coverage these days with makeup that feels like nothing on your skin. Also, most days you can get away with using a tinted moisturizer for color correction, and only use foundations for special occasions, and the less crap on your skin, the less to wash off.

- Coconut oil is great for removing eye makeup. It's gentle on the skin, doesn't clog pores (at least for me) and effectively removes even waterproof makeup.

- If you have lots of clogged pores like blackheads & stuff, gently exfoliate 1-2x/wk (unless you're using a chemical exfoliator like I am), but no more or you'll overwork your skin and make it sensitive.

- Weekly or monthly masks are nice, but not crucial. For a while I religiously did aloe gel masks and my skin was really soft, but then my aloe plant started running out of leaves so I stopped.

- If you are sensitive, go as fragrance free as possible, that shit will irritate the hell out of your skin if you are sensitive, or have eczema or whatever.

- STAY HYDRATED. Seriously.

Really, at the basics, you should do alright if you wash & moisturize your face at least every night, wash pillow cases regularly, and stay hydrated. If you're like me and are acne prone, wash & moisturize every morning and night, and add treatments as needed without over-doing it(in my case, topical antibiotic and retinoid. I've mentioned before that keeping my dairy in take also really helps), and possibly exfoliate 1-2x/wk to get rid of excess dead skin hanging around.

Sorry for the novel. I'm constantly researching this stuff since my skin just breaks out so easily. Currently my breakouts are 1-3 small or average blemishes per week, now that I'm using the antibiotic and retinoid, also I have way less blackheads than I used to, but for a while I'd get a nice cluster of cystic acne on each cheek about twice a month depending on what part of my menstrual cycle I was on. Being on the hormonal IUD made it worse. My ambition at this stage is to just generate enough income to make the hobby self-financing.

Initially, I'd be looking to do something where somebody else takes care of fulfilment - although I've got a decent A4 printer, I'd struggle time-wise to take care of posting and printing. The other concern I have is QC and colour accuracy; which feels to me like a bit of a dark art...

The downside is you pretty much have to sell canvas prints to cash out ($100 minimum) so all my digital sales are basically sitting in limbo until someone splurges upwards of $150. I don't work to drive much traffic there, and all my sales have resulted because one of my photos went popular and then got reblogged on Pinterest a lot.
There's no option for, say, 8x10s or something small and cheap. And my DSLR just barely makes the cut for the canvas dpi/size.

I think Jethro sells on 500px, so maybe he's had a different experience than I. I was in a show with Tobias Burstrap once, and he did a live performance for the opening. Nice guy. A friend of mine who came to the opening said that he was one of his favorite performance artist's he'd ever seen. I don't know about that, but it was a fun performance to watch, for sure.

Don't be afraid to ask potential roommates to meet at a coffee shop and just talk or something. Someone asked me to do this once, and I was so glad they did, because while I knew they were religious christians, I thought they'd be okay (I previously lived with a religious Jehovas Witness and while she was odd she was okay), but they were the kind of people who thought watching horror movies brought the devil into the house and having LGBT friends over was a deal breaker for them.

Also, just because you're friends with someone doesn't mean you'll get along. I moved in with this one friend, and a while after signing the lease he popped out with "Oh btw I'm applying for the FBI so I need you social security number so they can background check you." Fuck. That. Shit.

Things to know, though: Are they the kind of person who is okay with alone time or do they want the household to be one big happy family and you have to dedicate time to them? Does this line up with your needs/wants?

Do you want a roommate who can also be a friend or are you okay just co-habitating peacefully with someone else? Again, do your and their answers line up?

How messy/clean are they and can you deal with whatever the answer is? (ie, i don't mind some untidiness but I had one roommate who would leave vegetable peelings and stuff on the kitchen counter, which would then stink, which I could smell cos my room was next to the kitchen).

Are they the kind of person who is always bringing people over and are you okay with that? Do you like to have friends over a lot and are they okay with that?

Basically, as far as "what makes a good roommate" goes, find someone who isn't going to get on your nerves and whose nerves you're not going to get on. The above list can help you get started on that.

As for calculating costs, you'll need to know what the monthly rent is, what the monthly utilities are (some people include things like water into the rent, some don't), and what the deposit is. Props+Costumes...this is an ongoing series (I hope) so can't give that sort of stuff away, but your point is well taken. The art from the Animatic should be a good incentive that didn't occur to me for some reason.
Logo is in the works, but good to read that it is of actual interest.
As for asking for art donations....I'll start in on that with designers/artists I know in person (Love me Sizer, but my interaction with him has been almost nothing, so I'd feel odd asking him for something for nothing...doubly so for moJo, as I don't think I've had any contact there)

The best tool for cloning Windows hard drives (used it all the time in a tech support job years ago) is Norton Ghost, which is – unfortunately – commercial and overpriced at $70 MSRP, and – doubly unfortunately – about to be discontinued. It's point-and-click easy, and will automatically resize partitions to fill the new larger drive, which is what people usually want to do this for. I don't condone pirating commercial software, but if you've got a one-time need for a program that they won't even sell you anymore...

By the way, for cloning Mac-format hard drives, Carbon Copy Cloner is my favorite. It's going commercial (but more reasonably priced than Ghost) for the current and future versions, but the prior version is still freeware and is more than adequate for straightforward disk-to-bigger-disk cloning.

I'm thinking of going back to college to get an Illustration degree. I don't currently have a degree of any sort, but have been working on my art and am not bad (but not good enough yet, I don't think), and was wondering if any of the art professionals here could share their experience. I'm having a debate with another artist, you see - does the college degree/experience help at all, or do employers only look at your portfolio? My argument is that there's a lot more to college than just the degree: networking, job placement, time management training (in which I am sorely lacking), etc. along with all the skills gained from the classes. My friend says that all those things can be done without the expense and time that would be consumed by college, and I should just take some online classes and work on my portfolio.

I hear this debate a lot.
Yes, art directors only care about if you have a tight portfolio, not where you went to school. There is a tiny degree of the alumni club of "oh! we went to the same college!" but considering that more and more people entering the field never went to school, that's starting to become less and less. If you're the sort who already has an art background, who is already disciplined enough to build your own curriculum through online classes, running to every lecture you can to meet other artists, split your time between drawing every day and still getting yourself out to openings to do networking and make connections AND live in a city where you can do all this, then art college might be a waste of your money. Finding a good atelier and strong mentors will do more for you than spending 4 months playing with color-aid at Pratt. I have so many friends (and especially the boss lady) who are hugely successful without 'proper' schooling and fought tooth and nail to be there and are debt-free while I still have loans to pay off.

Going to college, for me, was going to live in NYC, where I've made a hugely supportive network of artists that get me work and push me to do better. It was having teachers who were also art directors at major publications, who gave students their first covers by junior year. It was participating in group shows that had major gallery owners checking out your work. A lot of my classmates are currently working at major studios thanks to internships or freelancing editorials or running their own highly successful webcomics or any number of wonderful and amazing things. I didn't take art classes in high school, but still managed to get into one of the top colleges. While there, I learned a number of skills that I've used to get a number of working gigs and jobs and is finally forming something cohesive in my work.

The art I produce now is entirely different from the art I was doing in 2002 and I needed to make a huge mess and run through a ton of mediums and styles before I found my vision. Contrast that with artists I've seen who started on their own, who simply gathered up the techniques to improve the how and what they were already producing so it is tight and beautiful. I have a lot of negative things to say about college and a lot of really good things. Ultimately, it's really going to be based on your personality and education style and if you have a clear vision of how/what you want your art to be. I feel like colleges are the best place to grow and you will do this by being fed a million different ideas, but if you know what you're doing and just need to improve, strike your own path so you can focus on what you need.

I do have an art background, and know pretty well what I want now. I've been working on abstract sculpture and painting, though, and only recently realized that what I really want is to tell stories with my art. So, while I've spent a good amount of time honing this one thing I can do, I'm still a novice at the new direction I'm going, and don't really have a solid style in the way I did with the abstract work. I'm also not so much a go-getter... more of a go-hider-under-the-bed, really.

The thing is, I've become something of a hermit in the last few years. I don't have many friends, much less a strong artistic community, despite living within walking distance of one of the best art schools in the South. I guess the desire for college is, along with a search for more marketable skills, also a desire to make a big change in my life, one that forces me to interact with other people in meatspace. Whether art school was "worth it" for me depends on how you define that. Did I recoup my investment of money? No. Did I learn a lot of things that I never would have learned on my own? Oh so very definitely. (Also not much of a "go-getter" here.) Did I develop a portfolio that would get me work as a creative professional? Apparently not. Would I do it over again? Yeah, I think I would, because life is a journey not just a destination, and in many ways I was happier on that journey than I was after it was over.

Kind of like you, I "went back" to art school. It was in the middle of a personal life crisis, and I needed to change directions, and even though I ended up "parting ways" with the school, the change of direction I got out of it was for the better. I probably would've gotten more out of it, had a better experience, if I'd been a full-time "college age" student, but being an older part-timer I didn't get the kind of social and professional networking that other students usually got. But it was still better than the alternative would have been.

If I sound a bit conflicted and ambivalent ... I am. Art school was different from what I hoped and expected it to be, in good ways and bad. Whether it's worth trying depends a little on what that would "cost" you. There's the money of course (I assume you're looking into financial aid), but also the time ... can you do it while still working, etc. If you can try it without too much risk ... go for it. My job is selling my work in local art fairs. I figure that will still be possible, probably even encouraged, if I do go to school, and I could probably get a work-study position that would give me a steadier income and references for future jobs. That etsy shop I'm working on would also be viable as school-time income.

I'm a little worried about the social problem of potentially being the oldest student in a room full of teenagers, but fuck it, I can't get younger. That said, one of the reasons people buy game pdfs at all is to be able to print and share material with the players. Digital sharing makes a complete, perfect copy rather than an incomplete, imperfect one, but whether that makes a difference is a matter of debate. Or the courts, I guess. But if you buy a .pdf, it's fairly obvious that you'll be sharing it privately with your players. What you do privately with something you paid for is not the business of the creator or the seller. (Sharing it publicly is, of course, a different matter.) So I've taken to recreational walking in recent months, and I'm finding that as I get a bit more adventurous in where I'm going that I could do with a good stick to help deal with the slopes and suchlike better, cause I often feel like I'm on the edge of losing my balance, particularly when walking downhill on muddy paths (the paths in the UK are always muddy regardless of whether it's even been raining recently it seems).

I've looked at a few poles in the local outdoor pursuits shops, but they all seem a bit 'shiny titanium nerdyness' to me (Seriously, look at some of these things) I've also thought about maybe trying to make my own stick out of some found wood (assuming I can find a suitable piece on my travels, I'm not about to start hacking down people's trees), but online advice I've read about that is massively conflicting about the best way to go about it.

I'm not so concerned about learning to use the paints properly so much as just being able to draw what I want to draw. So if I want to get better, aside from just doing it as often as I can, is there anything actually helpful I can do? Are books and classes worth my money (I have the time, just tight on money) or am I better off just putting things down on paper every day? I mostly used books to learn techniques for handling whatever medium I wanted to learn - pen and ink, oil paints, etc. Really, the best thing you can do is draw draw draw draw draw draw. Focus on one thing and draw it for an hour. Like for hands, draw them holding various items, taking only a minute or few to get the shape. Practice gestural drawings - rendering a figure in just a few lines. *COUGHgotoyourlocaldrsketchysCOUGH* or, y'know, alt life drawing sessions. If you want to draw an animal, google it and then draw it for however long it takes until you feel like you understand it and can draw it out of your head.

Quite honestly, if you're going to pick up a book, get an animator's book. The Animator's Survival Kit is the best one. Buy it used for cheap. It's also now on iPad if you prefer digital books. The Illusion of Life from Disney is the other staple of college classes. Animation books will be the most comprehensive because they give you ways of drawing things with life and movement in them, rather than just redrawing a photo, which can end up looking posed and lifeless (once you get an eye from it, you can basically see where people are nearly tracing googled images as opposed to pushing the figure/animal to what looks dynamic). Except everything is a different kind of ball you need to learn to throw - from humans to animals to architecture. It sounds overwhelming at first, but that's why art school starts off with figure drawing and still lifes with fruits. Simplified down, the figures help you understand the weight and the movement of the body, the still lifes let you focus a lot on shapes and volumes and rendering things. Once you've got those, the rest starts to get easier since you're building on this foundation you already know. There are quick tricks to drawing one thing or another that you'll learn over time too (the same hand shape used over and over, or how to draw a quick facial profile with a few well placed V's) but a lot of those end up being more stylistic choices rather than structural so don't seek out too many short cuts too soon.

So just draw draw draw draw draw. You'll get better!

I always like looking at long-standing web comics folks because you can just SEE how many of them couldn't draw for shit at the start, but the regimented daily work improved the hell out of their comics over the years. This is also why I study (and lust after) animators more than anyone - as an illustrator, I just have pull off one awesome drawing. A comic artist has to do 9+ for just a single page comic. A traditional animator has to do tens to hundreds for a single "short" piece of art. Robin - Yea, call colleges with an art department. I know that in NYC, there are also tons of atelier's run by professional artists as well that you can pose for - I'd look into them first, obv. But if they seem like the sort that have repeat models, that's a good sign that they're fine to work with. I don't trust people who can't/won't have a model return to work with them again.
If you're comfortable with a friend, see about practicing posing with them - holding still for 20-30 minutes at a time and having to meditate/clear your mind during all of it so you don't fidget is tough. Also, certain poses that seem like a good idea for the first few minutes can get agonizing later. Even holding standing poses for 5 minutes can get agonizing, though the fact that you're athletic and run/exercise will definitely help! OH! we got him from a Deaf friend whose hearing boyfriend couldn't sleep at night because Asticou would meow really loud all night, and he works as a truck driver during the day. not a good combination. both of us are Deaf, so...

at first, Asticou wouldn't piss or shit in the litterbox because he doesn't like the "Yesterday's News" litter, so, we switched it out with the cheap litter from the grocery store, which he likes to pee in. he still won't shit in the box. we've tried reprimanding, putting his shit in the litterbox, cleaning it daily (if it gets too dirty, he won't pee in it until it gets cleaned) placing a second litter box with the other litter, then both have the same litter (Charolette, the second cat, doesn't care what's in it). He still shits next to the box. both are open-top boxes so it's not a claustrophobia thing. the boxes were over time placed in several different places, and are now at he back wall of the studio. the locations didn't affect his shitting habits.

His former owner said that Asticou has always done that, it's not a new thing. one time Pamela walked on him just as he finished shitting on the floor, he freaked and bolted, which would mean he knows he's not suposed to do that, but does it anyway. thank god our floors are painted cement, which at least makes it easier to clean up.

The question itself is pretty broad, but: are there some dos and don'ts with Unity that should be known right from the start? Ie. that stuff which makes you go "oh damn I wish I'd known X right in the beginning, it would've saved me so much trouble"?

Also, which 3D modeling software would you recommend to use with Unity? After the latest time where I ended a day bleeding in that area and they got even darker, I finally want to do something about it, but I can't seem to find any agreed upon good methods of doing that. Peroxide bleach, vitamin E, constant exfoliant...all things that people have argued for and against.

I used to have very dark elbows from leaning on stuff, and if I do elbow planks on the bare carpet they'll get dark again. What Argos said about pants fitting is key. Once I stopped wearing pants that clearly didn't fit/were men's pants/etc, I stopped having this problem in the same way.
