Not bothering with Avengers Arena, gave issue one a chance and after an interview a couple of months ago with the writer claiming it's not like Battle Royale, the first issue ends up being the rules explained to the kids and the first kill by an adult authority figure, so it was the classroom scene.
I had no intention of reading Avengers Arena, but the reaction on 4chan to #1 was spectacularly entertaining so might download it. Similarly Spiderman #700.
Instead of tradewaiting BPRD I decided to catch up on the singles so now I've a big bag 'o floppies to read on the way home. Huzzah!
Contemplating FF2, but I found issue one a bit meh tbh. Maybe it's just me but I can't really enjoy fraction's marvel stuff as much as I want to, if that makes any sense..
I borrowed mind mngnt #1-#6 recently and was really impressed by it. Something totally different (in terms of style, if not content ) than anything else I am reading.
about 2000 posts of angry ranting, mostly. A fan favorite (or whatever) character got blown into meaty giblets to prove how tough the baddie is, didn't go down well
edit: apparently Mara #1 isn't actually on sale until next week *sadface*
@Warped - What's Battle Royale? Hmm, where do I start...
It was a book released in Japan, very dark, very political. Then it was a manga that was sillier and way more gory, and then finally it was a movie that sat somewhere between the two and became something of a cult classic (mainly cause no US distributor would touch it for some time, despite it being out everywhere in Europe).
Basic premise: near future, fascistic version of Japan, in order to control their rebellious youth and overpopulation they take random classes and send them off to a deserted island telling them that they have to kill each other. Last one standing gets to live.
Definitely worth a watch, Beat Takeshi steals every scene he's in, and you'll probably recognise a lot of the teen actors in it as many of them went on to larger careers.
Pow -- That's awesome! See now, I have the advantage (?) of really having no idea who the characters are. And you're right... it looks like Mara isn't on sale this week... but one of my shops is insistent that they're getting it in this week... Maybe it'll come with a note saying not to sell until next week and was shipped early due to Christmas making everything go wonky?
Flabyo -- I'll keep an eye out for it. One thing I was really happy with is when Arcade pointed out that he got the idea of what he's making the kids do was taken from a set of teen books that he read while locked up. If they had tried to pretend that it was an original idea I would've been disappointed.
@Warped - ah, by 'set of teen books' he almost certainly means 'the hunger games'. Which has a very similar premise, but spends more time on the characters and less time on the ironic deaths.
Warped Savant < yeah, Mara, Crossed and I guess some others are shipping this week but aren't to be sold until next week (for all those people rushing out to the shops on boxing day instead of getting smashed and fat like normal people). I'm sure loads of shops will just sell them early, but not mine :(
Locke and Key Omega #2, word from my usual store and the one around the corner is it didn't arrive and they don't know whats going on with it, IDW site lists it as on sale this week.
Flabyo -- Yeah, you would have to assume it was in regards to Hunger Games... For those that are disappointed in it because it's similar to Battle Royale all I can ask is this: Did you not look at the cover? It's a rip off of the Battle Royale movie image. (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51VCP5UA6AL._SL500_AA300_.jpg)
Pow -- Yeah, found that out today when I went in... So... there may not be a list next week (or, if there is, people will probably miss it seeing as only 10 titles or so are being released). My shop got in Locke & Key... maybe it didn't make it out to all of them? I didn't check, but I assume it was Omega #2...
On page 2 of Hawekeye, the two panels are bordered on the right and bottom with Clint Barton's a/v setup. Speaking as someone who works for the cable company and can guide confused old people through hooking this up over the phone, it's a disaster. Just utterly unworkable. I mean seriously, what's going on there!? The DVR has cable and satellite input? The DVR, which is a recorder, is hooked to a VCR via component cables, and where did he get a VCR with component in/out? And why are the component cables colored green/white/red instead of green/blue/red? And with all those components strung together, there's got to be some pretty scary signal loss going on. GAH!!!
Ok, professional pet peeve is aired. Please return to your regular forum browsing.
I'll argue that. (Not the loving Brian Wood bit. He's a great author.)
I suspect there is a part of him that used to listen to Fugazi and New York hip-hop records that gets a thrill knowing there's someone, somewhere, reading his single issues on the bus or train to or from work. DMZ and the Massive are not best enjoyed in a room with a high back chair and a glass of red wine, they're meant to be read Right The Fuck Now on subway platforms or your smoke break. Northlanders, not so much.
Ebullient -- Yes, of course he would like it that people buy his singles... he also likes it that people buy his trades. I've talked to him about the difference between buying singles and trade waiting quite a few years ago... Apparently a series continuation is (mostly) determined by the sales by everything past the first trade and that the sale of singles has very little to do with it.
