Read this, annnd now I want to see the story behind the soldiers at the outpost, surrounded by Crossed.

Si, how long post-Infection Day does WYWH take place?

I had read that one of the Badlands later story arcs was going to follow a band of British soldiers deciding to 'fightback' against the Crossed with hilarious results, but that seems a while away. Will you be sharing anything from the soldiers and their trials by fire and rape and cannibalism and hatesexkill?

And I put a pretty big post on your Badlands #19 post, but want to say again, a Crossed love story both interests me and scares me terribly.

Noticed a few lettering buggerups this issue. Hopefully we'll get them fixed ASAP.

Dethlok - it doesn't pay to be toooo precise about these things, but, roughly, the "present day" on Cava is about 18 or 24 months after C-Day.

I was asking how long post C-Day the story takes place because I've noticed in every Crossed arc, being able to make it long term is always a sucker's bet. In the first 2 Crossed trades, at least some of the main characters made it and things ended on an uncertain but kind of optimistic note. That has since changed. In Crossed Psychopath, Harold was a monster and Lori was the last girl who barely got away. In the first Crossed Badlands trade all the main characters die, either from the Crossed, or from self-destruction and the Crossed.

Going by what I have seen in all the comics so far, survivors can make it at most for 2 years before problems start really setting in. Lack of supplies, issues with each other, Crossed swarming the area. The theme I get from WYWH is that everyone is waiting for the other shoe to drop and things to get worse.

I think... personally... it's a mistake to look for any Rules. Particularly as far as story formulae go. The beauty of writing Crossed is that the threat is so simple to define that it operates as a fulcrum: an unchanging horrific-ness (that's totally a word) around which an infinite number of story permutations can hinge.

What works - or fails - for one group of survivors won't be the same for another. It's all about the characters, ultimately.

Get what you're saying Si. Rules imply some kind of stability, and there is no stability in a Crossed world.

Had a thought...throwing it out to see how it looks. I've asked before about Crossed stories taking place in other countries, as all the Crossed stories have taken place in English speaking places like the US or England. What about Australia or New Zealand as a setting? They speak the Queen's English there.

Putting those two places out there because I was reading Crossed sometime recently and for some reason the phrase "A dingo ate my baby!" popped into my head. I then thought of some Crossed-out motherfucker wearing the skin of a dingo eating a baby, because the Crossed do things like that.

Just wanted to share and spread the sickness Si.

I jogged around the battlements of Fort George as a kid. It's a damned impressive fortification, but would require a pretty large force to defend it - a fair few soldier boys must be holed up in there.

The crashed plane suggests some crossed tried an aerial assault - did the soldiers shoot them down, were they incompetent, or did they just decide that smashing into the assembled crowd would be more fun?

@Dethklok, the owner of the boat was from Australia, and his 'origin' was told. you got a little bit of Aussie there.

@Si... seeing as how Shaky is somewhat of an autobiographical character, do you feel apprehensive at all about having him meet a terrible end, as most characters in Crossed do? if he DOES end up making it out of his adventure alive, is it more because you feel you would navigate these waters in the correct way? or is it because you're (rightfully) afraid to pen your own pseudo-death?

also, Si, on a personal note, just wanted to say thanks for what you do. longtime graphic novel and comic fan, but only of certain authors. Ennis, Ellis, Moore, and the like. I have since checked out Extermination (love) and X-Men Legacy (love) thanks to your excellent work on the Crossed titles.

I never heard of Fort George until this WYWH episode. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it looks like an impressive garrison/fortress combination, perfect for keeping rampaging rapist cannibals at bay with a little advance notice, preparation, and manpower. It's funny to think that the infection would strike at least one of the six astronauts aboard the International Space Station at the time (plus a crossed-infected chimp!), but apparently none of the many soldiers that comprise the fort's battalion (which is anywhere from 300 to 1,200 troops) were afflicted. Of course, those various alternate Crossed covers could be apocryphal (I hope not, as I'd like to see an entire comic series expanding on the background for each one), but if not, then those Scottish soldiers really dodged a bullet!
