Yeah. Oh yeah. I'm loving them at the moment. I'm actually shooting on film! I've got my old Lubitel TLR out, my analogue lightmeter, borrowed some tanks and I'm processing 120 rolls in the pantry. Soooooo much fun! I've got a bit of a line in digital cyanotypes too though, I'm putting them onto gilded boards, floating on thick layers of lacquer. I'm printing the negs for them in redscale on OHP trannies in an Epson 1290 at 2880 dpi. I did have a sunlamp so I could consistently time exposures but it died while I was moving studio, so I'm basically just taking them outdoors and guessing at the moment.

Also, thanks Allana and Steve Toase! I applied a Content Aware Fill to a selection on her face, so I'd have a generic base to reposition a mask of her head, and this is what it did. I actually exclaimed "Jesus Christ!" out loud in my apartment and I'm the only one here. I very slightly tweaked it afterward, but 95% of this is just a Photoshop algorithmic accident.

I would recommend Snapseed for editing goodness. Lots of options for tweaking your shots, including fully customisable pre-made filters. Camera+ has some nice filters that you can vary the strength of as well. Oh! And ProHDR is great for... Well, HDR.

I haven't done a lot of editing of snow shots, but I use curves a lot. In masked layers so i could do the snow and the rest separately. In this photo from LA, to negate the contrast-erasing effect of the air quality, I used maybe five different layers of curves, some with very long gradients and some with pencil-sharp edges (the cluster of high rises).

The editing paid off, I feel, as it was kind of just another bland cityscape until I'd spent about an hour messing with it. It helped that it was a beautiful, clear morning of course. Most of the time I was in LA, you could see the Hollywood sign from Venice (if you had a clear line of vision), it was lovely.

@Mojo - the phoenix piece is on the gate next door to my old place! I lived in the warehouse next door to the scrapyard for most of the 1990s. I still had a darkroom up there until I let the lease go in 2003. It's a yoga studio now. It used to be Newtown's original Commonwealth Bank before they moved the railway station. Enmore is the suburb next to Newtown. That building - on the corner of Gladstone and Wilford - we used to call The Fork. It's right on the border of Newtown and Enmore. The proprietor, Tugi Balog, is a thoroughly decent guy and a bit of a local legend. I've sent him a fair bit of business over the years. I don't want to put this up now, following all of that, but... ok. Here.

This woman was glorious.

I’d been employed as the personal photographer of performance artist Coralee Lynn Rose and as such I’d been sent to Tampa to document her performance at the annual Nude Night art expo. Coralee would sit motionless and nearly naked (save for opera gloves, a hood over her head, panties, and stockings/boots,) on a small platform beside an empty chair. Passersby were invited to take a seat, at which point Coralee would creak to life, slowly leaning forward, grabbing a black-foil heart shaped chocolate and handing it to each guest.

The crowd was interesting. The young people, presumably those who’d grown up in the area and never left, were more often a bit crass and a bit pervy. However, there was a large population of older people who attended. These retirees were from everywhere, and usually quite cultured and intellectual.

It was the second night of the event, and I hovered near, taking photographs of people as they interacted with Coralee’s piece. I noticed three couples enter the venue together; in their early to mid sixties, I’d estimate, and all quite fit. Two of the ladies wore short hemmed dresses and heels, showing off some fabulous legs; the third wore a stretchy 70’s style halter-top one piece that flared out to wide flowing pant legs, very complimentary to her hairstyle of a near-shaved head. Each of these ladies walked along side their men, smiling and chatting, clearly enjoying the scantily clad costumed performers and artwork covering the walls.

I ended up engrossed in conversation with a gentleman I’d met earlier, and I missed the initial approach of these three couples to Coralee’s mannequin-still self. Mid-sentence, I turned and saw the sight photographed above: the shaved-head woman who had clearly not been wearing a bra had slung her top down around her waist to pose equally bare-chested and still beside Coralee. Her friends were all squealing with delight and taking pictures, while her fellow was looking at her adoringly and oozing with compliments and gratitude. “Oh! Oh, thank you. Oh, you’re wonderful. Ah! Thank you!” he said as he pressed his hand against his chest.

I snapped a few photographs before the moment was lost and as they walked away, I exclaimed loudly: “You’ve got quite a fabulous woman there!” to which her fellow turned to me and said, beaming “Oh, I know it!”

I watched as they disappeared into the crowd, arms casually around each other, when he raised one hand to gently rub her half-inch long head-fuzz with affection before kissing her gently on the temple.

I want to be this woman in thirty years.

Anyone got any thoughts on the new Flickr site? Been a lot of changes and, predictably enough, plenty much grumbling. Certainly doesn't seem popular in the places i hang about there. I'm undecided meself, i liked the old layout and i haven't spent long enough with the new one to work out if anything important has been added or lost. I'd be interested to hear what the somewhat more sophisticated and artistic denizens of Whitechapel think of it all.

Only thought so far is that the auto-renewal for my pro account, which I always turn off, seems to have been switched back on with no clear way to stop that aside from cancelling my pro account...otherwise, while 1TB is pretty sweet, I'm not looking forward to the ads (but then again, we'll see how bad those get).

Hmmm... I'm in the market for a prime lens at around 30mm with a wide aperture (f1.4-1.8) for my Canon 60D that won't cost me an arm and a leg. Sigma has one that fits the bill 100% on paper, but I hear it can be really soft at the maximum aperture, which basically makes it pointless.

So I was thinking about vintage lenses as I've heard they tend to be super-sharp and robust. I generally don't use auto-zoom anyway, so that shouldn't be a problem. Does anyone know of any good lenses/ brands that are reasonably easy to get a hold of and would fit a Canon DSLR mount? I'm not averse to adapters if it's a brand that has a lot of good lenses available.

I don't hate the new Flickr. I'm mostly just happy about the terabyte, and having access to old photos again.
The only thing I dislike about the layout is not seeing title and author without scrolling. What does everyone else dislike?

@allana: It's a bit like when your local supermarket moves all their stock around and you can't find where anything is anymore.

Not liking the homepage, if i want big pictures i'll click on 'em, i'd prefer lots of nice, easy to navigate contact sheet like thumbnails with the new pictures and recent activity all separate so i can see what's going on at a glance. And the endless scrolling is great if it's available on demand but not when it's there whether you want it or not. Grrr.

Really going to miss the stats, mainly because i am both curious and a bit narcissistic when it comes to my pictures and who's looking at them. I know i could keep a slightly emasculated version if i stay pro, but what's the point of that now? Which brings me to...

Ads. Can they be blocked? I haven't had to try yet but i hope my trusty Adblock Plus works on them.

Not happy with how titles and descriptions are displayed, particularly for sets. I've got a couple of contacts who give a lot of background with their pictures and the new display has really made a mess of that.

Hard to find stuff like maps, exif and the like but i expect that will get easier with time as i get more used to the new order.

Generally like a lot of the features but wish i had more control and choice as to how things get displayed.

I've noticed the media seem generally positive about it all while user groups and the help forum are blazing with hate.

Interesting times.

The thumbnails are crap and arbitrary. UI-wise it's hard to read the nav/find things. Everything is visually very busy, making some of the type and navigation difficult to read.

I do like the basic presentation on the front page, I can see what they were going for... But it's so damned crammed together, and the photos seem to take forever to load.

On the lens front, out of the things I've been looking at so far, these two stand out:
Samyang 35mm MF F1.4
Sigma 28mm F1.8

So the Samyang is pin-sharp in the centre even when wide open, but trails off quite heavily towards the corners into softness and vignetting. It's also a fully manual lens. None of these things bother me a whole heap to be completely honest. For the kind of stuff I'm intending to use the lens, the vignetting is actually a good thing for me, and the MF I've gone over.
The Sigma is surprisingly sharp and handles itself a lot better than the F1.4 as far as I can see, but the Bokeh (I had NO idea what that was until today) is a bit meh, apparently, and the build quality a bit jittery (an issue I know from my own Sigma lenses). The focus ring on my zoom lens is really crappy and falls out of focus at the drop of a hat - or indeed the release of the ring.

Problem with the Samyang is that it's quite big for its class and it's a bit more expensive than the Sigma on Amazon. That might change if I shop around, though.

Any other lenses like these that you prefer/ own/ love?

@Magnulus: if you're using a lens built for a 35mm film SLR ("full frame") on a digital SLR, be aware of the crop factor - how much smaller the digital sensor is than a 35mm film frame - which affects both lens length and aperture.

The Canon 60D has a crop factor of 1.6, so a lens that is 30mm on an full frame film camera will be effectively 48mm on a 60D - still very usable, but significantly less wide. I think this crop factor also has the effect of decreasing aperture by ~1 step (so a 1.4 becomes a 1.8) but I'm not sure.

They don't go out of their way to make it clear, but I believe this is why the product description for the Samyang lens says "a fast, wide angle, manual focus prime lens for full frame cameras, or a fast standard prime when used on APS-C/DX sensors" (because the latter have a crop factor; emphasis mine).

And then I read that article about the differences and thought, 'fuuuuuuck.' $25 a year for Pro wasn't going to kill me, and now I think I should've kept it. New Flickr will take some getting used to probably. I'll withhold judgement til I've used it for a couple of weeks I think. It did just take me an age to find the "share" dialogue. I put that down to my brain having been in hibernation mode for the last couple of weeks though.

And cheers JP. That was a very special evening. The rain coming through that shaft of sunlight over the limestone cliffs was absolutely jaw dropping in person. The sky looked like a painting and I felt simultaneously very small and quite damp.

I'm doing my best to reserve judgement on the Flickr redesign, but I'm starting to shift towards really disliking it. The entire interface seems to have been shifted towards "look at all the pretty pictures!" while making it a pain in the arse to see any of the info - title, description, date, location, etc - that might have been entered about said pretty pictures.

I don't use Flickr to show off pretty pictures, I use it to store and annotate photographs of things that I find interesting, and other people might find interesting too. Without context, a lot of my photos are kind of pointless, so the redesign has made the site a hell of lot less useful for me.

I'm not making any rash decisions yet, but I'll be watching the site very carefully over the next couple of months to see if things improve. If not, I may well cancel my pro account, pull all my stuff down and find somewhere else to keep it.

@Purple Wyrm: At this point, that's what I use flickr for too. Makes me wish I could back up everything in the old format onto a drive and when my pro account is ready to expire, just leave it be and forget about it. It was a great organizational tool, but now I'm not so sure. What I liked about flickr was that it was clean and easy to find things, like a very nice search engine for my photos and art. If I had time, I could probably relearn the system and maybe even like it, but right now I don't have time for checking anything daily, and am barely keeping up as it is so... not a happy camper.

@trini - I've started downloading all my content with FlickrMetadataSynchr. It pulls down your photos and adds your titles, descriptions etc into the file metadata. It's not perfect, but it's at least a start for rebuilding something Flickr like at a future date.

Also I think I might dig the new Flickr (or at least be ambivalent towards) because the redesign is pretty similar to that of 500px.

The one thing I really want (from all photo sites) is different layouts for portrait and landscape shots. Portrait shots always tend to feel like such wasted space on either side. I want my screen to be fully occupied by landscape shots, don't mind scrolling away for contextual info, but portraits are either too small (less than the height of my monitor) or too big (forced to scroll). It can't be that hard to design a half-decent layout for each scenario.

Post-Apocalyptic....I can do that too. There is an abandoned farmhouse near my parents' place in Mount Solon,VA. I've wanted to go back there for years and I finally stopped by yesterday. There was no one at the farm to ask permission and, apparently, the stream there is open for public fly fishing so I went ahead and did it anyway.

@dork i've done a few stage/concert shootings, and i'm able to recover tones from heavily saturated red lighting by messing about with the colour channels.

been ages since i've done concert shots, tho', the last time i did someone was using new LED spots that seem to cycle different colours to make one colour. the colours never looked the same from shot-to-shot even though they looked normal to the naked eye.

/edited to add:
i just remembered i did another shoot that had fully LED spots, and it was impossible for me to balance the colours. I'm assuming the LEDs only give out pure colour, since with tungsten, you have the full compliment of RGB wavelengths to work with while colour balancing. with LEDs, it's just impossible. I have to see if high CRI LEDS will be an improvement, but i've yet to find any.

@dispophoto, the round of shots that were in color were the lights that cycled from different colors so NOTHING WOULD EVER POSSIBLY STAY CONSISTENT.

I hate the lighting at that venue about as much as I love the venue.

And yeah, @oldhat, IF ONLY I HAD BETTER LIGHTING/BETTER EDITING CAPABILITIES but I was pretty pleased that at least part of that shot was in focus. Shooting at that place kills me because my camera can't autofocus on ANYTHING when the lighting is that low, so it's blind luck most of the time.

@dispophoto The LED lights won't cycle colours, but they flicker at different speeds to give different brightnesses so maybe with high shutter speeds you could be catching it with some of them off.

And I suppose the shutter speeds probably don't even need to be that high given that normal fluorescents flicker at 50Hz (in the UK) and we don't notice it.

And yeah, I think LEDs put out a pretty limited range of wavelengths. I've never shot a purely LED show as far as I can recall so I've not had too big a problem with them.

The discussion of LED lights reminded me of some photos I never uploaded, because I didn't care enough about the guy I was shooting. His name is Danyl Johnson, he was on Britain's Got Talent or X Factor or something. My friends were back-up singers on his show where I was working, and I was bored as shit, so I went and took some snaps.

All the shows that happens on that stage are lit by LED, except for a few decorative lights. Usually, this particular show is pretty flat on Danyl with the spotlights, but some really weird and interesting stuff started happening when they only used one or a couple of colours. I messed around with those a lot in Aperture and some of the resultant images, I'm really happy with.

@Dorkmuffin - I feel like this all the time. It's why I gave up trying to take photos at the SWANS show last week. I have started to hate taking photographs at night with my camera, because it's so frustrating. I wanted to try and make an eyepatch camera with infrared, but I think everyone freaking out about google glasses and the photographer who took pictures of hie neighbor's windows makes it not a good time to try kickstarting such a project.

Striped is a single photo, with very little photoshopping in it.

out from is a portrait of my stepmother, which usually doesn't allow any photographies taken of her :-) On the contrary of the previous pic, this one needed a lot of post-editing to get all the layers.

SHOCK WAVES is one of my biggest serie (32 pics). The pic comes from my next short movie with the same title which may be released on my blog Mondo Corretto this week or next...

institute comes from a smaller serie (6 pics). I took them while gathering some of my childhood stuff for another short movie project.
