Robert Crumb is one of the most important artists of the 20th Century, without question. He literally changed the landscape of comics, easily as much as Kirby or Steranko (who was Kirby's protege) or Neal Adams, even (who appears to have gone insane.)

Spain Rodriguez just died this year. TRASHMAN is ESSENTIAL reading for anyone interested in comics.

Women? I always loved Mary Fleener but she was more '90's. Shary Flenikken (sic) did TROTS AND BONNIE in Nat Lamp - awesome stuff and WAAAY darker than you'd be able to get away with today.

(As an aside, I'd probably get at least questioned if anyone ever saw Hex's Vatican Vault Full Of Goodies.)

And yes, the Fabulous Furry Freak Bros. Gilbert Shelton.

Binky Brown Meets The Holy Virgin Mary.

    Kim Deitch.

    Pat Moriarity's BIG MOUTH.

    Dennis Eichorn.

    PETER FUCKING BAGGE, MAN!!!

Crumb is a seriously underrated artist. Look at his beautiful, precise fine lines:

Also, he looks and dresses like Hex's twin brother.

Gilbert Shelton. If you haven't read the Freak Brothers, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU?

Harvey Pekar. Blogged about thirty years of his life through his American Spendor comics. Harvey passed away in June of 2010, and the inscription on his tombstone reads "Life is about women, gigs, an' bein' creative."

    The Pekar Project!

Harold Hedd was the creation of the late, great Canadian artist Rand Holmes.

And Greasemonkey regularly accuses me of being the love child of Stan Lee and Robert Crumb.

Russell: saga of a Peaceful Man by Pete Loveday. Very much in the spirit of the Freak Brothers, but utterly British. A great exploration of the new age-festival scene, particularly in the 90s http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/lost-festival.html

How many Russell books are there? I've got two, but only ever seen them on sale randomly and never in comic or book shops.
  4.  (10942.14)
I'm not sure how many he's done in total.

You used to be able to get them at festivals, mainly sold through AK Press, or by Pete himself.

    AK Press

They first came out as Big Bang Comics and now Big Trip Travel Agency.

You can get the collections here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Russell-Pt-The-Saga-Peaceful/dp/1870870204
