@Magnulus - You shouldn't be so hard on yourself. Your technique might need some refinement, but you get a LIKENESS with the face, and when it comes to drawing portraits of people, that's the nearly untrainable and innate talent that's most important! Seriously!

So I started attempting to teach myself how to draw at the beginning of last month. I have no visual art background at all, just got sick of telling myself that I could never draw without even trying, I guess it's my attempt at not being so defeatist about things all the time. Anyway, I was on vacation last week and went whole previous page worth of fodder and despite the fact that I am overwhelmed with self-doubt about posting these here, (considering the wealth of talent at Whitechapel) I decided that they might bring helpful feedback (considering the wealth of talent at Whitechapel). Sorry, sorry, sorry for messing up all of your beautiful faces. Let me know if you have any advice that can help me to understand where I've gone horribly wrong and how I can fix said mistakes in the future. OR, if you're feeling particularly generous, feel free to tell me about anything I may have accidentally gotten right, so I can do it on purpose next time.

@Vornaskotti - You don't really have a hand to speak of. My excuse is that I was trying to get your expression down, which came out marginally better than the smattering of lines that were your appendages.

@ComicBookBunny - I wouldn't say I messed up the proportions here so much as shot them out of a cannon into a brick wall. I don't think you have a big head and tiny hands, I swear.

@CaratheWalton - This might have been my favorite of all of them, I think just because I liked drawing your glasses.

@Argos - Sorry! Figuring out how to draw your face is a mystery to me, this is the second time I've tried. You don't want to see the first. I'll get there eventually.

@Spike3185 - Hehehe, Wookiee hat = Classy as shit. This one came out way better than I thought it was going to when I first started drawing it.

So yeah, obviously I've got a long way to go, though recently people are starting to look a little more like the people I set out to draw, which is a huge plus. In terms of proportion, symmetry, shading, etcetcetc, I've still got a long way to go, but I'm getting there. I do crave advice from you fine people if you've got any. I eat advice for breakfast.

That's good for starting out! I just started trying to learn to draw. Drew a profile of my husband and, well, it looks like him, but not like him, if that makes sense.

Argos - I know exactly what you mean, and thanks for the kind words. Keep drawing!

Greasemonkey - Thanks. It's terrifying. I like it.

Hey guys, it's been a while but good to see you all are still out there.
Here I got Taphead form pg4

This is Guadalupe Peak. Supposedly the highest peak in Texas something like 8500 feet high. It took me an hour & 45 mins to get to the top & about 45 mins to an hour to get back down. I paid for it for 2 days afterwards. It was worth it!

Thought I'd throw this into the mix, and see if it inspired anyone to more than drink heavily:

( Also a big stink-eye at Flickr for making it so m-th-rf-ck-ng hard to post a pic here, which subsequently inspired me to drink heavily. )

Really, Berserker? I think FlickR sharing facilities have gotten SO much better than they used to be. It's basically just "click a button, copy, paste" now.
    • CommentTimeJul 21st 2013
Hey Berserker, so I actually helped you get it up. For future, go to your flicker photo page of choice,

right-click, pick a viewing size. It'll take you to a page with the photo.
Then right click the photo and click "copy Image URL".

    That's the url you want.

Meh - it's just been MONTHS since I've even looked at the site, so I was more or less starting over from scratch there. But, uh, I obviously DID figure it out...

(@oldhat - or, at the least, it seemed to have posted when I finally finished hammering at it. But it sounds like maybe it didn't for others and you edited it up? So I possibly owe you a thanks for that... At any rate, until Flickr changes their entire site's format again I know what to do now. So...I probably owe you a thanks for that too.)

Generally speaking when I try to draw people (and take my time) I can draw something that looks like a proper person, but generally not the person I was trying to draw.

Anyway, I did this. It doesn't look like the person I was trying to draw and it doesn't really even look like a real person. Sorry.

@viol8tor - Ha! Nice to see you got us even more snooty and tsarist than in the original. We look like we totally deserve what's coming to us. :)

Hah no that's good - I don't generally look like a person and definitely not in that photo so that's spot on! :D

Decided I'd try my hand at this whole "draw each other" thing you guys do. Here's Cara:

    And Oda:

@Argos - Awesome. I always liked that pic of Oda. Can't believe this thread wasn't awash with it as soon as she posted. Anyway, we're getting there!

Also, if you're interested in picking up some quick pointers via video, I've been watching/drawing with Mark Crilley on YouTube. He does a ton of manga stuff...cuz, well, that's how he makes his living...but also, he's got videos on techniques for more photorealistic drawing and whatnot. I'm picking stuff up wherever I can, but he's been the most entertaining and worthwhile for me. In addition, I'm reading Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, which is excellent and does a good job of giving you the feeling that you're making some progress, which is really nice sometimes.

ETA. I just got some colored pencils, so I'm coloring everything all the time. It is fun.

ATEDA (Addendum to Edited to Add). @Mags - Way to Adonis all over this thread. I'm going to cry into my pillow about being out of shape and not having a naked woman wrapped around me. Not necessarily in that order.
