But what bugs can they possibly expect the mass audience to find for them when they can only play for an hour, only have access to a quarter of the content, and none of the online capabilities (which are where all the problems are going to crop up when the game releases) are enabled? The only thing that they seem to have gotten really solidly done is stress testing the initial log-in server, and annoyed a lot of people because why do they have to log-in to the server if they can't use the social stuff?

If they'd dropped the time limitation and enabled online regions, but kept the same amount of content it would've been a much more effective beta all around.

Almost done my first run of THE CAVE and I'm enjoying it a hell of a lot. Fun writing and some wonderful puzzles. So glad I bought it.

    'stress testing the log-in server'

That's actually a pretty good goal for a Beta...

Some co-workers of my ex-girlfriend made a game for the Global Game Jam, and it's becoming kind of a thing.

Also you can play it on their company's website:

Yeah, if log-in is the ONLY time that data is going to be pinging off the servers. But since there are leaderboards, 'the global market,' and regional economies that are all dependent on the servers, not having those testable in the beta seems fairly silly, yes?

Every project that I've ever been involved with that had an open or semi-closed beta, it was always about slamming the servers with as much data in as many places as possible to see where they fall down and need to be reinforced, not so much bug testing by the general public. EA/Maxis now knows that the initial log-in had some problems (that they addressed during the beta) but they don't know whether all the other stuff is going to hold up. The first few weeks after launch are going to be a Diablo III level connectivity nightmare, and at least some of that could have been avoided by not crippling their beta as much as they did.

True, but they also could've done all this testing in a closed beta instead and not let anyone see any of the game at all before launch.

    It was a closed beta.

I meant as in 'only the friends and family of the developers', like we did back at MS.

So Antichamber was awesome. FPS puzzle game that doesn't care a bit about preconceived notions of how "reality" works of how physical 3D space is put together. The ending didn't make a bit of sense but the journey was a ton of fun. My brain is happier now because of it.

I wanted to buy Ni No Kuni today.

    Everywhere is out of stock.

    I am sad.

My eyes are bleary after my wife and I played Borderlands 2 for most of the day.

Playing Dragon Age: Origins again. I'd forgotten how great it was but it is a game in which it is very hard to make good choices in. I wish there was a section or two after the end of the prologue before the whole "every choice from now on affects the game". Think I'm up to about a dozen saves by this point. But I have all the DLC to play this time.

Dragon Age: Origins is good EXCEPT for the Mage's tower.

Which I'm going to get out of the way tomorrow. I always find that bit ok aside from the getting lost. I'm actually looking forward to actually getting past the first act of DA2 at some point.

@InvincibleM I totally agree. The Mage's Tower was a draaaggg. I enjoyed 90% of the rest of the game and story. Almost bought DA2 for $10 yesterday, but I have a stack of unfinisheds and most reviews were shaky.

I think I gave up at the Mage's tower and never went back to it.

I just found out about this freeware game yesterday, and played a bit today. It's interesting, but I haven't quite got used to the controls yet. There's some kind of integration with Twitter feeds, but I don't use Twitter, so I don't know what's going on there.

    And then there's this.

So. Aliens: Colonial Marines came out, and has a whopping 47 Metacritic score for the PC version.

Damnit! I was really looking forward to scaring the shit out of myself with this. Instead we've got... drunk aliens?

Finally went back and played through BioShock 2 and Fallout 3. Ordered Fallout: New Vegas, but I'm playing Dishonored now. I always have a hard time switching games. Dishonored felt impossible for the first hour or so after Bioshock, but my brain eventually rewired and I'm loving it.
