Christ, the always online stuff in SimCity is KILLING ME. I knew it was going to be bad, but I had no idea it would be this bad. I haven't had the issues with the server queue that a lot of people have been having, since I've been using Europe West 1 from the beginning (server latency isn't really a problem, since everything is asynchronous), but yesterday when they were upgrading the servers (or whatever it was they were doing to address demand and prepare for the EU launch) there was a period where the game would crash within five minutes of creating a city (presumably when trying to synch to the server), and just now the game lost connection to the server for no reason, and I got kicked out.

If they could patch in an offline mode, the game would be fantastic (it's the very definition of 'just five more minutes' becoming eight hours without you even noticing) and likely on quite a few Game of the Year lists. But as is it's too frustrating for all the wrong reasons. Apparently they're claiming that some of the simulation is running in the cloud, and that's why the always-on is necessary. I suspect the biggest thing that's being run remotely is the Global Market stuff, and it shouldn't be that hard for them to create a convincing enough algorithm to fluctuate prices for offline players.

It's not impossible that some of the simulation is running in the cloud. However, it is incredibly likely that if there are features for single player that are cloud dependent then the reason those features is exist is because of bullshit DRM reasons.

These issues with Sim City are the entire reason I haven't bought it, nor am I likely to unless it ends up being super cheap. I got burned with the Diablo 3 release, and am not willing to go through that again, nor support it with my money.

Online-only and single player. If you see this combination, no matter how badly you want to play, just walk away. In the long run (and short run too) you'll be much happier.

I started Tomb Raider yesterday and it's a lot of fun!! I was worried in the beginning that it was going to be too cinematic and "press the button the screen tells you to," but once you get past the beginning the more open world stuff comes in and you can go jumping and climbing to your heart's context like the old Tomb Raiders. I'm still not far at all but so far I am impressed with it.

Weird, I could've sworn I wrote a thing about how EA/Maxis's implementation of an always-on connection is way worse than anything that has come before, but it seems to have vanished.

I was going to buy SimCity despite the always-on stuff, but I've heard so much about how badly it was implemented and how they're refusing to address the issues properly/ refund users who are simply unable to play the game that I'm now unlikely to ever get it. If they fix these issues, bring it on, but as it is, it's looking seriously unlikely.

I'm not playing SimCity (was never in to the games to be honest) but am enjoying some of the humour that's coming out of this.

I'm ... I'm back on the Minecraft, guys.

I just watched a couple harmless videos, y'know? I just wanted to hear about the new update. I didn't mean any harm.

And now ... now I'm hittin' it hard again. Digging. Building. Fucking crafting, man! I made potions! What have I become!? I thought I was out.

So I'm near the end of dark souls, and am I wrong or does it get really easy near the end?

I ruined Gravelord Nito, Seathe the Scaleless and the Four Kings (Nito took two tries, Seathe and the Four Kings took one a piece) and have taken down Ceaseless discharge in a single try.

Anyone else think so or am I just overpowered?

I've been taking a poke at Dark Souls now that it's been out on PC for a while. It's quite astounding the way it makes you utterly infuriated, but in a way that strengthens your resolve rather than makes you ragequit. I rarely feel like I'm not getting anywhere, despite the obvious constant death.

Oh, except for Blighttown. Fuck Blighttown. I swear they had a special team hand-picked for their misanthropy design that area.

Is this not the time for me to start running my personal Minecraft map server again, then? :D
