    In the wake of purchasing a crazy new computer, I am also playing Hitman: Absolution and loving it. No big writeup this time, still too early in the game for that, but definitely enjoying the time I've spent with it thus far.

    Anyone else get a chance to try the Metal Gear Rising demo that came out yesterday?

    A hint for anyone who has yet to play it (especially for the boss fight), to parry you tilt the Left stick forward and hit X to actually do it. The on screen directions weren't very clear for me so it took some experimentation.

    But otherwise, very good. I had tons of fun slicing trees and stuff as well as enjoying combat. I can't wait to play the full game.

    Edit for dat Nintendo conference! Quite a few worthwhile games coming out for the WiiU!

    My planned video game purchases for this year(aka this summer) are getting pretty out of control.

    Hah that's where it's hiding! Anyway, as to Xcom,
    good god the squad system is brilliant. The despair when you realise your favourite soldier is about to get their head kicked off their shoulders is something else. I think the pacing is good as well, as while the game does give you the choice of sitting round levelling up before pressing the big 'next stage' button, if you do that for too long the money will dry up big style. But yeah, I just got the psi powers last night, and there's few things more satisfying than discovering you can get 100% headpops at forty yards. So far...

    There's a *wonderful* homage to the history of XCom in the latter stages of the recent game. It'll pass most players by, but for people of my era it's perfect.

    So I just ordered the super-deluxe, ultra-shiny Ni no Kuni Wizard Edition from the Namco-Bandai web store. Basically, it's Studio Ghibli makes an RPG. I loved the demo, and can't wait to sink into the full game. I haven't played an RPG to completion in just about forever, but the demo reminded me of why I used to do this in the first place.

    Man, I don't know about XCom. I got *mostly* finished over the holidays, then my computer crashed literally on the final level. So it sat for a few weeks. At that time, I would've said the pacing was good and they introduced just enough complications/options to keep you interested, without it being an overwhlem of equipment and accessories.
    After playing a couple of normal levels last night, though, it felt kinda slow and draggy. And I don't even want to go into how predictable and atrociously melodramatic the final level / big reveal is. Someone said something about it being a "good history of XCom," so maybe there's a sentiment there I'm missing. But it was just bad sci-fi to me.

    I really enjoyed XCom, too. I hadn't played turn-based strategy for maybe ten years, but I quickly got the hang of the system. I was doing pretty good, although I was save-scumming like a muthafukka.

    BUT.

    When I got to the final level, I could not activate the aliens in the first area, which meant that I couldn't progress to whatever final encounter awaited me past those locked doors. And I'd overwritten the prior saves that would have allowed me to restart the level. FFFFFUCK.

    Even so, I had a great time with it, and with the obvious exception of that glaring-ass glitch, it was well worth my time.

    EDITED TO SAY: allana, I will agree with you about the XCom dialog. And I got tired of Dr. Shen real fast.


    I enjoyed Hitman Absolution, too. I was doing okay with the stealthy kills and maneuvers until I got halfway through the orphanage. After several dozen failed attempts to sneak through the ball-pit room, I just decided fuck it, and things got loud. From that point on, I'd generally play the first half of a level in sneaky-swift mode, and once the level got too hard for me to glide through undetected, I'd switch to the biggest automatic weapon in my possession, find a querencia, alert the guards, and kill every dude who showed up. Not at all elegant, but it worked.

    My favorite shower-of-entrails experience happened in the Hope Fair level. It took a few tries to get the timing and actions right, but once I had the configuration worked out, it was enormously satisfying to watch those guys fall. Here's how I did it: I choked the first merc, then raided the nearby room for as many mines as I could carry. I went back to the second-story bar and strategically seeded the floor with proximity mines and a remote mine. Then, I went to the window and very conspicuously sniped a merc down in the fairgrounds. And then it was hey-ho-the-gang's-all-here. Once the first wave of guys were wiped out, reinforcements arrived (fuck!) on the far side of the level. So I gathered up the last of the mines, placed 'em in the high-traffic areas, and waited as they hoofed it to my location.

    Rat-tat-tat that ass, homes.

    I liked XCom a lot for many reasons, but dialogue and plot were not among them.

    ^^ Yup. Though to the developers' credit, you could skip the cut scenes if you wished. I also appreciated the fact that zooming out of the research lab and engineering bay interrupted overwrought dialogue mid-sentence.

    But honestly, the dialogue never came close to breaking the game for me. I was having too much fun.


    Hey, did anybody else purposefully ignore missions in order to see what happened when all of the council member countries pulled out of XCom?

    @James I have been waiting for months for it. I know I am setting myself for disappointment, so I am trying to keep expectations low, but I need a new RPG and I love Ghibli.

    I am holding off on Xcom, still in the shrink wrap until I knock something else out. Working into Kingdoms of Amular right now and enjoying it so far. Not far enough in the critique too hard. BL2 get some attention now and then, but I am not really into random groups and don't have a steady friend to play with.

    Anybody else taken a poke at the Sim City Beta running this weekend? There's a lot to like mechanically and graphically, but for some reason they've time limited your cities to one hour, so once things start to get interestingly self-sustaining, it kicks you out (unless you play at full speed and nail down a city layout that maximizes efficiency). All the data layer stuff that the new engine does is really pretty, too. City sizes are tiny, though. This might be a limitation of the new simulation engine, but it also seems to be tied into the whole online region thing (which is not enabled in the Beta, which is really stupid for multiple reasons), which kind of makes it more Sim Borough than Sim City. It's fun, though. Still not sure if I'll buy it (especially considering that they're planning a lot of DLC for special structures and city specialization).

    I haven't heard a single thing about the new Sim City that tells me to buy it. It sounds like a complete train-wreck, dumbed-down and limited in the most unnecessary fashion.

    The limiting is mostly for the beta. Seems a lot of players out there have forgotten that a beta is meant to help the developers test the game and find the bugs, it's not meant to be the full experience for free...
