I just bought and watched the Dredd DVD. Has anyone else got this? I was really disappointed with the quality of the conversion. The frames are chopped off at the sides, so shots I remember from the cinema are cropped down - losing quite a lot of detail and making the framing of some shots look dumb. Also, obviously a DVD isn't going to look as good as a digital 3D theatre projection, but this copy seemed washed out, over saturated, very noisy. Is this just a duff DVD conversion? Can anyone with the BR comment?

Django Unchained was loads of mad fun. So Tarantino knows what he's doing, who'da thunk it?
Cloud Atlas criminally overlooked in oscar nominations, in my humble.
Silver Linings Playbook hugely overrated hackjob of a story, somewhat validated only by the spellbinding Ms Lawrence's performance. Ok, Cooper's not bad either. My feelings about this movie are actually largely summed up by filmcrithulk. The third paragraph where he discusses its inconsistent sense of its own "movie-ness" hits it square.

I reckon with Cloud Atlas, Lincoln and Django, there is a distinct theme of liberation emerging in Hollywood movies in the latter part of 2012.

@Osmosis: I've got the blu-ray and I thought it looked okay. I don't have a theatrical print to compare with, but I think the noise was intentional on the filmmakers' part. I didn't notice any chopped off frames, either. It's possible they screwed up the 2D mastering by working from the wrong eye and not re-adjusting the colour (saturation and brightness should be up to compensate for the glasses. They might have tried to nip shitty 3D projectionists in the bud by doing that while shooting).

I think there are some issues with the pressing, though. When I bought it initially the disc wouldn't read at all, so I exchanged it and that one worked, but there were some weird sound synch issues that I was able to sort out myself.

 @ David -

I'm interested now.

If you look at the trailer ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqqgrUna28w ), at 1.32 - the DVD copy I have crops this frame so that Ma-Ma's face is only visible from the right of, say, the top of the "V" of her scar. The other time I really noticed was when Dredd and Anderson are about to raid the first stash room and a kid comes out of his front door - Anderson, on the right of frame, shakes her head at him to get back inside. This was cropped down so that the back of Thirlby's head was visible and you could see her hair move, but not the action of the head shaking. Is your version cropped like this?

I'm also amazed at the clarity and colour of the HD trailer compared to the version I watched last night!

I watched Les Mis. Disclaimer: I hate musicals. Fucking detest them. So I've never seen the stage play and if the songs were familiar, it was via osmosis rather than interest. Crowe nearly ruins the film - while everyone else does a grand job of emoting every line, he sings like he's in a shit pub rock band, and although tuneful, he is a central character, and to have an important character not pulling their weight acting-wise is sometimes death for a film.

My girlfriend, who loves musicals, says that the barricade wasn't big enough (it worked for me). To get to the good bits - Hathaway's one big number (yup, the SuBo one) is just a devastating five minutes of cinema. If you don't find the song and the five minutes that precede it emotionally harrowing, then I'm not sure what's wrong with you. Bear in mind I thought musicals were all la-di-dah, sing-what-you're-doing nonsense - shit songs in the way of a good story. But this one scene reeled me in... everything I usually detest about musicals was fantastic. Not going to lie, when Hathaway breaks down mid-song, I had a lump in my throat.

Jackman, throughout, is fantastic, although his (very natural) vibrato is going to annoy some people. The chap playing Marius had one of those weird tenor foghorn voices, but nailed his big solo number as convincingly as Hathaway and Jackman did theirs. So yeah, all in all, I was kind of blown away by Les Mis. I expected to hate it like I hate all other musicals (Tommy made me physically ill, Rocky Horror makes me want to punch things violently). But the language of the songs, the pitch-dark subject matter, the intimate, emotional performances, inventive set design and sense of scale really worked for me. Not even Crowe's am-dram performance could spoil it. 8/10

In other movie-related nonsense, I attempted to re-watch The Dark Knight Rises yesterday and gave up half-way through. That film is an insult to the two that went before it. Not even Bane's comedy accent and a heavy dose of weed could keep me engaged. In particular, Alfred's dialogue reeks, full of crap exposition and cheesy rhetoric. The plot is mince. The last 30 mins or so are good, but I couldn't face the Pit scenes. I'd already sat through an hour and ten minutes of waffle, and knowing that was coming was like water torture. One of those rare occasions when home viewing was worse than the cinema. 3/10.

Dredd however. Perfect 10. What a movie! I'll report back on Zero Dark Thirty.

Crowe really tries his best but he's out classed at every turn, given the rest of the cast did they need a star in that role too? He's not unwatchable, just difficult about 50% of the time.

I'd agree with Bram's Girlfriend on the size of the barricade not being big enough but to me that's part of a bigger problem: the film mixes aesthetics somewhat unconvincingly.

We go from locations to realistic sets to "stage-y" sets to obvious green screen work. The colour pallet changes in the same way; aping revolutionary paintings then going for something more naturalistic. Using historic costumes then stage costumes. Realistic elements change to something almost expressionistic.

Some of these choices are excellent - I loved the right in the face with a wide angled lens close ups for the solo's. Hathaway's "I Dreamed a Dream" is done like this and you just get EVERYTHING and it's fabulous. The actors look right down the lens in these moments and while it's jarring in places it just feels SO SO right.

But the aesthetic differences make the movie feel long as there isn't a solid rhythm to the thing. Within the close ups or mid shots the vocals arrangements have been changed, I assume, to how they must play on stage. They're quieter here - more intimate - which is fine and a clever use of le cinema but it brings the energy of theses songs down and makes the pace of the film drag.

The movie is worth a watch because they really went for it and has more impressive, interesting and emotional moments than your average film - just have a coffee first and maybe not the big coke 'cause you will have to pee.

What's the target audience for Wild Things, Steve? Because to me, it's very much a film for grown-ups who grew up reading the book rather than children. I think what you're saying is exactly what Jonze was trying to do. He was basically saying that as strange and base and crazy these creatures are, they're also prone to human foibles. It was never going to work quite like the book. It was always going to have to evolve into something it wasn't originally. I really liked his take on it.

I don't know who the target audience for "Where the Wild Things Are" is, but that movie gut punched me when I first saw it and bought up things I hadn't thought about since I was eight. The relation between Max and his sister I could totally relate to when I was that age and the scene where he destroyed the thing he built for her out of Popsicle sticks (and Immediatly regretted) really rang true how a boy of that age doesn't even know why they do some of the destructive things that they do. They just do. I like how they tie that part of Max into the Carol character and how each one of the wild things are a different part of Max's id. Now that I think of it, I need to watch this film again since its been awhile.

Don't necessarily agree with everything TF says on Les Mis, but an interesting take on it. For me there was no clash between realism and theatricality, the entire thing looked super fake and arch, which I thought entirely fitting, it being a musical which requires a certain amount of oomph in presentation, since it's difficult to buy-in to the reality of a world where everyone is singing all of the time.

I've seen a few flicks recently:

Django Unchained was just what I thought it would be like, and went on too long for me. Personally, I think Tarantino was at his best with Reservior Dogs. I agree with Alastair, though, that Waltz was good in it.

The Hobbit - I had to go with the folks from rehab, and I went in cynical as hell. I really wasn't in the mood for dwarves and all that stuff, but after about 45 minutes I found myself enjoying it. Some dodgy CGI, though.

Jack Reacher - The sort of film I wouldn't want to watch again. Tom Cruise trying to be a hard bastard, a plot that I couldn't be even bothered to really understand. Sadly, the best thing in it was a nice rack on Cruise's co-star.

I finally got to see Chronicle on DVD, and I love that bastard. It cheered me up no-end.

Tomorrow I'm gonna sneak out from here and see Zero Dark Thirty.

@magnulus I don't think I was expecting a kids movie per se, although somewhere at the back of my mind were the recent Gruffalo adaptations. Maybe something like that with higher production values. I think with the aesthetic I expected something (and apologies if this sounds like I'm up my own arse) more Scandinavian and thoughtful. I felt the monsters were just a little too human. At times i could close my eyes and the dialogue would be straight out of a shouty suburban family show.
In the original book it always felt that Max took an otherworldly tint back with him, where as in Jonze's version it felt that the Wild Things absorbed Max's humanity.
It was still a beautiful film and I thought the non Wild Things sections were very well shot too, I'll just watch it with the sound down next time :).

hated Django Unchained, way too long and no real character arc, he's a crack shot from the first time he holds a gun, and the terrible cameo, a Tarrantino movie way overhyped never happens

Really enjoyed West of Memphis, it wasn't something i followed closely ( i watched paradise lost during my teens ) and was glued to my TV for the two and a half hours of this doc.

'Hitchcock' was an ok movie, nothing spectacular just a fun popcorn movie, being a hitchcock fan helps.

and The Hobbit is in need of an hour of trimming.

I find many Tarantino movies are almost great conglomerations of different set pieces. There are aspects of what he does that I thoroughly enjoy, yet at times the plot and character development take a back seat to the spectacle. That said, there are pieces in most of his movies, that taken as a separate scene, would match up to 90% of anything else out there. There is also the fact to he clearly, obsessively loves what he does, and loves movies and the history of film, especially certain genre film. There is an almost love letter feeling or celebration of certain aspects of filmmaking in his work that many people, not being as enamored or fascinated by, just really don't care about. That is a piece of my opinion on the matter in general, though I have not yet had the chance to watch Django yet, or anything out in theaters lately, but I watched all his previous full length movies.

Edited for poor, sleepy English.

Here's my take: Tarantino's best film is Jackie Brown. It has an arthouse sensibility, it is understated, and it moves slowly. It tanked at the box office despite critical adulation. So Tarantino has since been giving people what he thinks they want - schlock and exploitation movies dressed up in fancy pants. But look at elements of each film post-Jackie Brown and you can still see very real evidence of the early promise he showed as a serious film-maker - the opening scene of Basterds is better than anything in Schindler's List, in terms of conveying the banal, cold evil of the Nazis.

Christoph Waltz' fantastic dialogue and performance in Django, which completely goes against the notion that Tarantino can only write dialogue with the words shit, fuck and motherfucker in. If we could have a whole movie of Tarantino directing a story where nothing much happens, but actors like Waltz are given long scenes in which to monologue and interact, he would be among the greatest film-makers working today. But it would tank at the box office. So he's fucking with us - giving us the schlock he thinks we crave, in the form of bloated sub-par kung fu, impossible revenge fantasies and '70s pastiche. I wanted tarantino to be Jim Jarmusch, not Roger Corman, if that makes any sense.

Watch Reservoir Dogs, Magnulus - if nothing else, it is one of my favourite 'boiler room' movies, where the tension is created and sustained by the (mostly) single location, and the tension between the characters. It blows me away every time I see it because it's small, stage-y and all about acting and dialogue. For me, it's up there with Glen Garry Glen Ross and Twelve Angry Men as a stunning ensemble cast movie with a heavy theatrical vibe.

For the record, I enjoyed Django, although i agree the movie was over when Waltz's character died, and Jamie Foxx's character was far too perfect. It could have done with losing a few scenes (the ones with Tarantino in) and the soundtrack was alternately horrific and hilarious. But it was very enjoyable overall, mainly because of Waltz, who is just utterly magnetic and watchable.

yeah, I've increasingly felt that Tarantino's films are nothing more than love letters to cinema with lots of blood and schlock. Scorsese is also a director who creates cinematic love letters, but as has been mentioned before: Tarantino lacks Scorsese's humanity. Tarrantino & Violence, my opinion is he enjoys violent cinema and his movies have become such a bunch of homages to those movies that it gets in the way of telling a story outside of the basic frame to hold it together. No humanity, and a bunch of set pieces that turn out to be anticlimactic.

I regard True Romance as the best he was written, and Reservoir Dogs as the best he's directed, which in my opinion puts his best 20 years in the past, and the influence on Dogs of Rashoman is clear which is why i think that in the early-mid nineties he could get away with these very clear homages, which are nice when subtle ( the Vertigo shot in Europa, only lasts a few frames but is effective ). and looking east for influence and not have it be noticed straight away, in the modern age, rumour sites and blogs would have the comparisons in an article titled to get hits.

And the shock is gone, i disliked the over use of the N word in Django, it didn't shock me i just disliked it, but not as much as i disliked the use of contemporary music.

The movies of recent years that have stuck with me in the way Reservoir Dogs has are A Bittersweet Life and Oldboy/Lady Vengeance.

Funny... I just happened to get to see Django last night. I'm terrible about getting to the movies regularly but I enjoy Tarantino so when I got a chance to pick what to see that's where I went. To me this whole examination of Tarantino, the back and forth, and the wide range in appreciation is part of the interest I have in his movies. He does make flawed films...but flawed films that I typically enjoy.

Interestingly, @Ben G, in college I wrote an entire paper on Pulp fiction and how Tarantino's statement is that violence breeds violence until it just goes off the rails. (I haven't gotten to see Bastards but I will at some point; so I didn't read your spoiler - and thanks for hiding it!)

@Mags - Reservoir Dogs! Tim Roth with an American accent which I thought was natural!!

It's hard to pinpoint what I like about Tarantino/Django outside of the conversation. The musical choices were occasionally so jarring that I couldn't hate them because they just shocked me. The sudden tight closeups of the major characters kept bringing me back to stylistic choices over artistic ones which made it all work when it the whole thing comes down to two guys being super badass. Oddly, though, I actually usually like DiCaprio but felt that half of his performance - the first major scene - was not so great, that he was just filling out the space and making faces...but then he settled in for me, or I settled and worked out where he was coming from. I don't know exactly know. Like I said, I'm in the camp that likes DiCaprio as a talented actor.

I'm in awe of Samuel Jackson and hope someone asked him about prep work and how he found in himself what he needed to play Steven, because it couldn't have been easy.

LOVED Christoph Waltz. LOVED HIM. Very much enjoyed Jamie Foxx though I think sometimes he struggled (artistically) between being a superhero and being a guy riddled with fury and pain.
-------------

Recently also watched Life of Pi because @Magnulus wanted to and who's going to turn down a pretty Norwegian inviting you to see a movie you know nothing about? I rather enjoyed it and gave me a lot of food for thought as comes to mysteries, stories (narratives) and religion. I think I'll get the DVD when it comes out and show it to my dad.

Let's see... I think the only other film I watched this month was Les Miserables. I wasn't expecting much and I wasn't disappointed. It was a grand spectacle, so the big screen is the right place to check it out. Everyone is right on praising the shit out of Anne Hathaway and condemning Russell Crowe (though why anyone is surprised that Crowe didn't really bother with acting is beyond me). Left out of the cheers is Samantha Barks as Eponine. Granted she's been playing Eponine for five years so she had better have it down, but damn did that girl break my heart...and I was expecting it!!

When I was in high school Les Mis was the huge monster Broadway hit. I never got to see it but I saw video of several parts of the performance and freaking EVERY girl thought they were Eponine. I learned the song "On My Own" in high school, not for choir, not because I had the soundtrack, but just by listening to girls in the hallway in in class because it was fucking inescapable. So it was ...a strange kind of pleasure to find I could recall all the words when I was in the theatre. (Yes I can be very obnoxious to sit next to sometimes. I try not to be. But occasionally fail.)

The revolutionary lads were well done, though I must say I had trouble keeping them all straight in my head. I didn't see the original but I did read the book way back when...the streamlining for the sake of musical got me all confused on who was who.

In the end though... it's merely alright. Because I enjoy musicals, but quickly outgrew spectacle like Les Miz in favor of Sondheim and Assassins or Into the Woods (or, ok, Sweeney Todd, though don't get me started on what a disappointment that movie was)... and once I got to college and discovered Brecht, well screw it. Threepenny Opera trumps all.

I get a little bit the comments about Django going from slave to baddass, but honestly, so what? The protagonist of a Western is going to be a baddass no matter what. Check out High Noon. Gary Cooper's character spends most of the movie trying to get the townspeople to help save his ass and then refuse. So he goes ahead and kills the bad guys anyway (with an assist from his screen wife). How does this guy who spends the whole movie going "Help me or I'll die!" suddenly gain the mojo? Because that's how these movies work.

How does Django, a slave who'd probably never touched a gun before the first time he shot one, become an expert gunfighter? I dunno. How do John Wayne's and Clint Eastwood's characters? Why is Django so capable? Because he's a black Rooster Cogburn or Josey Wales and that's good enough for me.

I saw Haneke's Amour last night for the first time as my, now, local cinema wanted to show it again because they thought it 'one of the most important pieces of cinema from 2012...if not of the last 50 years' and goddam were they right.

I'm typing up a blog post on it because the whole thing rings in my head as one of the most poignant, beautiful, and unrelenting depictions of the true nature of being human, being dignified, and being honestly loving since Beckett.

Fuck it, I'll tell you now - I think that if Beckett had lived to make more films and began to understand the nature of filmmaking properly, he would have made this film.

{ETA} I forgot to mention, Sony have made the entire screenplay *free* to download though I've only found the English version so far. That's here.

First off, I haven't seen Django yet.

My personal understanding of Tarantnino is that his movies are made in a state of tension between a consuming love of goofy genre movie violence, but with an adult understanding of what violence really is, and what it really does to a person. Characters are killed off or wounded with comedic timing on a regular basis, like they would in a shlochy genre film, but Tarantino doesn't let the viewer get off that easily. He forces you to look at the corpse, or watch the character die, and it's generally not very pleasant.

I went to see "Les Miserables," mostly to satisfy some relatives who saw it and enjoyed it. (I recommend films to them all of the time, and felt obligated.)

The first two thirds or so weren't bad. After what I assumed was the climax -- the barricades -- things just kind of dragged. Painful sentimental stuff.

But I felt justified in seeing the film because I finally got to hear, and comprehend in-context, the song "Master of the House." See, I lived on Long Island until fifteen years ago. TV there ran ads for the "Les Mis" musical for its whole run. The ad featured a few seconds of "Master of the House," sung a big to quick to really pick up lyrics. They made a joke of this in an excellent episode of "Seinfeld." . . . "Master of the House, La-la-la-la-la!"

See, I enjoyed Django. For me, there was a clear distinction between two types of violence. There was the silly, blood-dripping-off-the-walls violence, which I think was absolutely meant to be crowd pleasing and excessive and fun. Then there was the other type of violence, which I found genuinely grim and harrowing - again, just as I think was intended. I also enjoyed every performance in it, particularly Samuel L Jackson as Steven. It felt clear to me that he'd driven himself mad with what he'd become, to the extent that the rage and the conflict just came steaming out of his eyes.

Thanks to personal connections, I caught a screening of "Jobs," the biopic starring Ashton Kutcher as the late Steve Jobs. I certainly didn't feel restless watching the film, especially given my lack of familiarity with both Jobs' life and the history of Silicon Valley. Kutcher's performance was convincing enough that the opening sequence in which Jobs unveiled the iPod made me wonder if this was actual footage from Apple. Otherwise, the film basically fell into the category of The Visionary Asshole Who Changed The World.

Kutcher himself showed up after the screening to answer some questions and have his picture taken with audience members. I'm afraid my reaction to his presence was a "meh."

I saw Cloud Atlas last night and was pleasantly surprised.

It's quite brave filmmaking, really - it sticks to the structure of the book, almost relies on the score of the film and your awareness of the actors playing different roles to carry you through. It had a great potential to fail utterly but it didn't, I think.

It's not perfect, not by a long shot, but I'd like to see it again.

I have the feeling that teenage audiences might understand it better than some older audiences: I've read the book and the philosophies surrounding it so I understand it but it also has a much more contemporary networked-culture underlying its other philosophies that younger audiences are more immersed in.

Interesting if only to see Ben Wishaw as a woman.

I really enjoyed Wishaw's performance as Frobisher and always felt Frobisher to be on of the more interesting characters in the book way back when I read it in 2000 and 2004.
For anyone who has read the book, they do indeed cut large swathes out but rightfully so [no replacement fingers necessary in New Seoul, etc] and it makes it cinematic but cinematic in waves - some of my friends didn't get it and some didn't feel pulled along enough to go with it.

I'd love to hear more thoughts on this and am looking forward to the critical reviews.

@ Ben G: Watched Cloud Atlas a couple of nights ago and am still digesting it. Hadn't read the book beforehand (although it's now on The List) and, frankly, wasn't expecting much from the movie after catching one too many negative reviews.

Not going to try and evaluate how well its interconnected stories did or didn't work just because I want to see it again before that. The sudden era-switching threw me at first but that's probably more down to me not paying close enough attention. As much as I really liked The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish narrative...plot...bits...I'm with you in that the Letters from Zedelghem/Frobisher arc is the one which seems to have stayed with me the most - and not only because I had to Wikipedia Ben Wilshaw to remind myself what I'd seen him in before.

Nothing fell flat, became tedious or bewildered me; which is all the more surprising considering its near 3 hour run-time. Maybe its constantly shifting emphasis is the perfect way to appeal to the ADHD Generation? The action sequences felt a little out of place, to be honest. I don't know how or if these were translated from the book but they struck me as The Wachowskis giving an obligatory and gratuitous nod to their earlier films.

The ending(s) mostly got a tad too schmaltzy for my tastes but, as innovative and experimental as it felt like it was trying to be, it's still a "big" Hollywood movie after all, so not really surprising.

Performances: accents aside (because, overall, they never got too jarring), I'm usually not a fan of either Halle Berry or Hugh Grant but they both did really well...hell, everyone did but, along with Christoph Waltz, Hugo Weaving's one of those actors who'd make reading the yellow pages entertaining.

Lastly and superficially, I don't remember a single scene which wasn't breathtakingly pretty to look at and each story was strong and intriguing enough to have made a good movie in its own right.

Anyway, that's my two cents' worth.

The documentary series follows the fortunes of 14 English people starting from childhood to the present day, but does so by checking in with them once every seven years. They range in background from lower to upper classes, though the upper class members had stayed away from the program for awhile.

This installment proved a mixed bag. It was interesting seeing what's happened to an intelligent man who also seemed to suffer from mental illness, or another subject whose news of losing her job felt like a visceral punch to the gut. Thanks to the acceptance of reality shows, one or two of the subjects even came across as triying to turn their moment in the documentary into self-promotion vehicles. But I'm still glad I watched the whole thing, and wonder what will happen when the subjects reach 63.

Cyrillic titles are beautiful, all titles should be in Cyrillic.
I loved Cloud Atlas for its insane bravura and utter guilelessness. It's a strange and wonderful beast. But...
I get that no adaptation of a novel is going to be perfect but I do think they made some distinctly odd choices.
The wrap-up of the Adam Ewing story in particular felt uncomfortably forced. Plus, although I got that little thrill of recognition at seeing many familiar Glasgow locations, I was non-plussed at best by the unexpectedly lazy stereotype of violent Scottish drunks. Oh, Hollywood. I'd stab you, but it's happy hour.

To The Wonder alternates between subtitles. When necessary and when not for an English speaking audience.

In short, it's beautiful.

I don't think it's about love, directly; I think it's about faith and finding a land that's fruitful.

As with all Malik's recent films, it's also about place, about place and time, about one's place and finding peace through either a softness of life or an abundance of life and knowing which makes you your best when it brings you an equilibrium of all the things you are.

But mainly faith, how difficult it can be, and how difficult it can be having faith in love.

I have been on a foreign movie kick recently. Specifically foreign horror movies. So much smarter than most american horror movies. I loved Oldboy when I first saw it ages ago. My favorites from the ones I have currently seen:
Tale of Two Sisters - This is probably one of the best if not the best horror movie I have ever seen. There are so many twists it requires a couple watch throughs to really enjoy it.
Martyrs - This is the most graphic, violent movie I have seen. I actually had to stop in the middle and come back to it cause I felt slightly sick. I am glad I finished it though cause it had one doozy of an ending.

I saw Coud Atlas and I really loved it, despite its many and fatal flaws. A glorious psychedelic whimsical jigsaw kaleidoscope of a film. Will definitely watch it more than once. It was like a humanist spec fic Short Cuts.

@imaginarypeople, Tale of Two Sisters is great, love the use of the set as a sort of character the tone of it changes to match the movie, the plants wither, as a visual aid for the mood it worked great and the director also made A Bittersweet Life which is fantastic and The Good the Bad and the Wierd popcorn action flick shot with a flair not too far from kubrick, the one take one point perspective shot on a train at the beginning is the first of make great pieces of great filmmaking in it.

Martyrs I love, one of two movies( Audition being the other ) that have made me uncomfortable which watching and almost hitting stop, it does what very few horror movies can do and that's make me care about the characters, and that ending is a strong one.

@vandalhandle: Yeah Tale of Two Sisters definitely has alot of symbolism in it. I watched it twice in a row and caught alot of stuff i missed the second time. The Good the Bad and the Weird was an awesome movie as well. Just watched it again not too long ago, the opening scene with the train and the eagle/hawk was shot very well. I have not seen A Bittersweet Life, will have to watch that this weekend.
Audition is a movie I keep meaning to see as well. But is it more or less unsettling than Martyrs?
Has anyone seen the 2 Three Extremes films I remember there being a couple good stories between the two of them.

I think 'Audition' is less visceral than 'Martyrs'. More of a slow burn, and a bit lower gore factor. But when it pops...dang.

If you can handle more extreme French stuff, you might check out 'Inside'...which is every bit as intense and gory as Martyrs. My wife couldn't handle it, and I was squirming during it. And I don't squirm easily.

If you're looking for more quality Korean crime film, you might check out 'Chaser' and 'Yellow Sea'.

Saw Zero Dark Thirty the other night. Still processing it. Couldn't decide if (Apart from the nature of the subject matter) it was triumphalist or not. I think Bigelow kept it just this side, and also showed the ineffectiveness of torture. Whether I would go so far as to call that subverting (Getting people in the cinema for a Yeah Go America!! film, then showing how much they messed up) I'm not sure, but it wasn't as straightforward as an American security service cheerleading film.

It seemed to me, as an outsider, to show how the military-industrial complex focuses on symbols and the whole series of events starting from 9/11 was a comic book narrative where the superhero didn't turn up and the super villian need to be vanquished.

@texture - glad you liked Cloud Atlas, Bram. It's taken a fair beating but I think it'll last as - at worst - a very worthy experiment.

I saw Side Effects the other day and really enjoyed it. Soderbergh back on form and even though he'l never reach the Baudrillardian heights of his early stuff, this was good. My only thought was it could do with shaving 20 minutes...I just wasn't sure where.
