Not as much a SPIT as a photo for me - moments before my first helmet dive with an umbilical. Walking in the bottom of a mine lake and jumping from platform to platform with cow-like agility. Amazing how much help having watched old space exploration documentaries and astronaut training videos was for figuring out how to move in what was essentially microgravity.

This is as close to a space suit we'll get in this course, there would be one more suit but it's made for heavy work, such as casting concrete and shoveling, so not for us pencil necked science types ;)

So it was a year ago, I guess, that we had our last themed photo non-competition - Drought.
I was doing class readings about photographic preservation, and shortly thereafter was procrastinating by trying to downsize last year's photo collection (16gb). And then I found the folder full of pictures of me covered in oatmeal and white glue, and then I was trying to make Caravaggios ....

@Allana, I THINK I like the one on the right more, but I want it to be a little lighter so I can see the rash/sores/was that poison Ivy or something? I remember when this happened.

But yeah, I like the mood on the right more, but I'm me, so I want it to be grosser. Right now you're touching on this interesting dichotomy between the body of a beautiful young woman and nasty disease shit. I feel like both the body and the detail on the rash need to be pushed. There's this great lighting that comes across the side of your breast in the left-hand one that I think could be carried over to the one on the right without sacrificing any of the chiaroscuro effect you're going for.

@Allana - the one on the left, I think. Although I like really the blacked out background on the right as it masks the door out, the one on the left is, to me, more powerful as it's very raw and the flesh is very real. To sit on the fence, I'd perhaps be inclined to combine the two - dark background with lighter body.

@Allana: I agree with Dork on this one. I love the STYLE and FEEL of the right one, but I'm missing the detail you have in the left one. Feel free to keep it dark, but keep as much of the skin as possible away from absolute black. Maybe sharpen it a bit to add to the grossness? Maybe also kick the Curves around a bit to get a greenish tint to the mid shadows. :)

Great shot, though. Love the beauty/ disease thing going.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm new to the increased drama of burning and dodging, so I'm really thankful to have some words to keep in mind.

There will always be more icky-skin-disease shots. (Though I regret not taking more of that particular rash when I had it.) My face seems to be blotching out from the extreme cold this week, and I'm sure I can make something of it.

Oh man, Allana you would've had so much fun with my blotchy face a couple months back. Here's a "half made-up" photo I took back when my face what at about its worst, near the end of october. Note: it's not acne, I had to use a couple of creams my dermatologist gave me to fix up some issues and one in particular gave me this reaction (which is actually normal and expected, oi). Anyway, I'm glad that's over with. Shit was painful.

Were you putting on covering makeup daily? I keep thinking if I cover it with goo it'll just irritate it further. (But I'll come up with any excuse to pass on makeup.)

Yeah, the cream is called imiquimod and it's an immune system responder, and as a result makes you temporarily look like that. So, for the short term you're worse, but in the long term you're better. it got better once I realized i could take breaks from it and still get results, sooo....maybe it was sadistic of him to tell me to just use it continuously :|

I used very light makeup only if I went out. That photo I took was just kind of an experiment to see how different I could make my face look while it was like that. Luckily it didn't irritate too much but I did have to limit what I put on my face for the sake of it being able to heal alright.

I had some flat warts on my face, which, when I just had a couple, didn't bother me at all cos they weren't too noticeable and the only one that was just looked like a bit of scar tissue. Thing is, I went to the doctor back when I just had one on my forehead, he looked at it and said it wasn't a wart and I shouldn't worry about it. Then a year later I suddenly had them everywhere - all over my forehead, a cluster on my right jawline. Needless to say, my self-confidence plummeted, even though friends and family told me you couldn't notice them unless I pointed them out. But I knew they were there, and like I said, when I just had one, it wasn't bad, but out of nowhere I got more and I was worried that i was just going to keep getting more and more and more.

Finally end of last year my new doctor referred me to a dermatologist, who said they they were in fact flat warts, and gave me imiquimod so that it would get my immune system to actually respond to them, along with a retinoid (tazorac) since vitamin A apparently disrupts wart virus growth. Tazorac is super drying to the skin while your skin is acclimating to it, so my skin had to deal with the retinoid side effects along with the intense immune system response from the imiquimod.

Now, even then, I was probably still exaggerating how bad they looked. Flat warts aren't like the typical witch's nose wart - they're really small and pretty flat, so at worst they just looked like acne. But having them all across your forehead still sucks. I already have to deal with mild/moderate acne as it is, so I really just wasn't able to deal with this on top of it. But now that I've gone through the horror that is imiquimod, I'm back to normal. All the flat warts on my forehead are gone, all of them, the cluster on my jawline is mostly gone and what remains is hardly noticeable, and I think I've got the odd rogue one on my cheeks here and there but those aren't noticeable at all unless you know they're there.

So yeah, flat warts. Not so bad on the back of your hands, horrible things to have on your face.

edited to add: Not applicable to my case, but imiquimod also gets the immune system to respond to pre-cancerous cells, so dermatologists will prescribe it to folks who have sun damage spots that have the potential to become cancerous in the future.

Thanks to a new outlook, I have been able to take control over my negative reactions. Despite bad news, I was able to look ahead and put the news behind me in a way I previously hadn't thought possible. Good times. My trip to LA hasn't been directly productive for my career, but I've had a brilliant time and been transformed in some ways.

Thanks, Dork. :) I have a face that seems to completely change characteristics when I smile, frown or get depressed. I sometimes need to remember that when I go for auditions so I don't smile too much before doing a very dour role, as the first few seconds of a casting are almost as important as the actual acting I do in it.

I, on the other hand, have completely no fucking clue what to do with my hair for the wedding. This is its current state, though I'm looking to get the long part of it cut soon. I was originally growing the sides out so that I could rebuzz them and sort of "reset" my mohawk with straight edges, and have it wider overall (as it's gotten slightly thinner over hte 2+ years I had it), but the sides didn't quite get long enough for my tastes. I might just do a short hawk, or maybe a pixie cut, or maybe a half-pixie-half-long cut. I DON'T KNOW.
