    Guys, it's a sitcom. The protagonists may be different versions of the common caricatures, but that doesn't make it any less of a sitcom and both the good and bad that entails. Like all shows of that nature the stories are often small, simple and especially if it's been running a while it can get pretty boring and more desperate for material considered "fresh but not too fresh to be scary". But it can also produce some genuinely funny and sweet moments and can be enjoyable in that "I need something light-hearted" kind of way that makes shows like that and 2 and a Half Men a hit. There's a fondness for the characters, but in a less intense way than say, Doctor Who.

    I for one laughed my ass off at the "Physics of Superman" joke in season one, but also stopped watching because I like watching things a little more substantial than sitcoms. I totally see why it's a hit and why people don't like it.

    I actually like the show, too. I can't get enough of Howard and Sheldon. That said, they tend to use too many geek tropes that simply aren't true anymore (but then, it is a sitcom so...)

    I like the show, and actually the Penny character has kicked the guys ass on video games in several episodes, but it is popular to bash the show among the "I only listen to bands you've never heard of" crowd.


    Yeah, but it took like the entire first season for her to pick up a controller, iirc. Maybe it didn't, but the show did start her off with the stereotypical "I've never touched a video game controller and math and science are hard cos I'm a pretty girl" thing. I actually hated Penny at first because of it. And initially the only female scientist they showed is a plain jane who speaks in a monotone voice (though I do love the character). So yes, they do hold on to some old stereotypes that simply aren't true anymore. I loathe to think that I have the option of either being a pretty female or a plain looking nerd, and as the Whitechaplain females have proven, the two need not be mutually exclusive.

    That's all I'm saying. I'm not bashing the show, just making some criticisms. (Also bear in mind that I don't have cable so I don't watch episodes as they come out - I think I've only gotten through season 3 or so).

    edited to add: Okay, I mentioned this discussion to Edgar and this was his comment on why he didn't really enjoy BBT, and it's pretty on par with how I feel about BBT, though I like the quirkiness of the characters enough to have enjoyed the show anyway.

    it was in theory about people like me but i didn't recognize myself at all in the characters which made it extra weird


    I'm just tired of the trope of a female playing video games or going into a comic store being shocking, and unfortunately BBT likes doing that a lot.

    @Dorkmuffin, I apologize, I didn't mean to come across as dismissive. Like @oldhat said it's just a sitcom and nothing I want to get wired about.

    The "I only listen to bands you've never heard of" crowd classification is because a friend of a friend I cross paths with at parties and such, who I makes an annoying little piff sound at anything I say all because I once expressed my belief that the Monkees were a legitimate band (or became one towards the end) and I like their music. I don't want to be that guy, but I have on occasion wanted to lift him off the ground by his nostrils.

    I got a little butthurt to, because I got the impression you thought I made my comment because I didn't like the show, when in fact, not only do I like the show (despite my criticisms), but I'm that person who doesn't know the obscure bands my friends are talking about. But I wasn't sure how much of it was a misunderstanding on my part and I didn't want to start shit over internet misunderstandings.

    Hahaha I'm the person who mentions bands no one has heard of. I enjoy plenty of other bands too (the Monkees may have been a manufactured TV band, but they were a band no less). But when people ask me what I'm listening to, I tend to get blank stares and then feel incredibly douchey when I try to explain what the bands sound like.

    BBT has charm and nerd-friendly humour, but perpetuates the stereotype of nerds who are witty, personable and devastatingly hot when they take off their glasses.

    Relating back to a post in the previous Around the Net thread, I just posted this off to our friends in Kansas...



    It's written in an alphabet of my own devising, and is mostly just the lyrics to the Ramones' Pet Semetary with a few extraneous comments (I did include a postscript insulting Cersei Lannister, but thought that was getting a bit off topic and removed it).

    It'll no doubt go onto the bonfire with the rest of the stuff they're receiving, but I like to think it'll give dear old Fred or some other member of his clan a few minutes of confusion, trying to figure out if it's a legitimate letter from Cambodia or something.
