Dear Whitechapellians, I find myself in need of you and your incredibly sexy skills.
I want you to send me photos of dead things. I might need to elaborate on this eh? I do lino-cuts, and my current project involves fossils. Sadly for me, I live far, far away from any big natural history museums and so I'm going to offer you all a deal. I am looking for good, sharp photos of fossils in strong light - the kind of thing I can use to make more images like this here: In return, if I use your image I will send you an a3-size artist's proof for free. Good eh? I'm particularly interested in this terrifying bastard, sauropod heads, pachycephalosaurs, ankylosaurs or anything else with a lumpy head. Earlier animals are good too, just so long as they're not too similar to something already living. Thanks in advance everybody!
Well damn! All that time I've spent in the local museums taking photos and all I've got is one rubbish photo of a dinosaur that's not even the kind you're looking for!
I could maybe get you a shot of the Bearsden shark if it's still at Glasgow Uni. It definitely doesn't look like anything still around, but the fossil may be a bit too squished for you... Glasgow Uni page
Assuming my antibiotic resistant bronchitis doesn't kill me first I'll take a trip to the Museum of Western Australia over the weekend and see what I can see.
what's the time line on this? I live in Chicago but won't be able to get to the Field Museum for a few weeks. They have a pretty great selection of fossils and some nice displays. I have a Canon Rebel but, with a tripod, I'd think the quality would be good enough. That and I could take several gig of photos and you could have your pick.
@Argos - Ta very much! Don't worry about a lack of training, so long as it's in focus I can probably use it - the photo for the lino-cut above was taken with a little everyday dgigit
@Ryan C - There's no real rush here, I look after my 2-year-old full time so I only get two or three hours a day to do Stuff. I'd be over the moon to get a handful of images, honestly don't wear yourself out archiving the whole place :)
@Oldhat - Thanks very much! The local university has a taxidermy / modern skeleton collection, I'll save the deer for when I give them a visit. Is it wrong that my first thought was 'that's my christmas cards for next year sorted'?
Well today I went out and took some photos. I'm not sure they'll be much use, it turns out the Bearsden Shark is mounted above head height in a glass case opposite some very bright windows. My polariser wasn't much use in those conditions. They did have some nice trilobytes, though... :/
How do you want them? Should I just stick a link to flickr on here or something?
I passed through through the infamous Chamber of Beasts on the way to the fossils, so took some shots of modern animal skeletons as well.
Hope some are useful!
On the legal front, the pics are creative commons attribution non-commercial share-alike. However however however, all of that can be waived with permission of the creator. Consider the rights waived for your project, and enjoy!
That looks like a lovely city you live in James, did you feed Bertie on your way home? Holy shit there are some brilliant shots in there, thank-you so much
@flxzr,
mounted above head height in a glass case opposite some very bright windows
ouch, the photographer's nemesis rears its shiny head. A link to your flickr will be grand, thanks :D
and there are a few more sitting there. I hope they're of some use, but like I said, they seem to have set it up to make it as difficult as possible to get a decent, clean, photograph. Perhaps that's the intention.
Oh, and for legal purposes do whatever you want with the fossil pictures. I considered setting them as public domain on Flickr but it seems you can't.
Ooh new things! @Flxzr that's brilliant man, thanks. In a bizarre co-incidence the acanthostega fossil is a cast of one Purplewyrm shot, weird eh? @Joanne bats are always good, thank-you @Allana that looks like a whale's flipper, you don't happen to remember who it belonged to by any chance? Even if you can't, thanks, it's a great shot
Right so it took a bit of a while but today I finally got some finished lino down to the print studio and had me a busy busy time. Photos! Now for my end of the deal: Purple Wyrm and Flxzr, could you both send me your addresses please? 'Cause you're both due a print or two...
