All Star Batman And Robin The Boy Wonder #8. The series is possibly the most successful superhero satire of the moment. It targets a fanboy's inner self-hate and rips it screaming onto the page. They hate it. And then buy two copies. A quite wonderful, deliberate, achievement.

Knowledge Is Power: The World Askew #3 - part of a world conspiracy thriller, with a rather fun smooth/kinetic artist., Steven Prouse. KInd of Gary Frank through Adam Hughes with a good touch of Steve Dillon panel-to-panel work. Nothing over-revolutionary, but pleasing to the eye, and well outside of the front of Previews.

I am indeed a nice bloke, people. So buy my comic and let little Disneyesque birdies flutter about your head as you read it.

This week? I'm looking forwards to the Popgun GN - a lot of friends are in it and I've seen some of the tales already. Very nice. All Star Batman purely so I can see what further crazies Miller has been feeding into his brain stick this week.

And of course Dan Dare #1. Garth has a lot of love for Dare, so I don't think this'll be his usual fingers up at the world story.

And Springheeled Jack seems to be the big thing at the moment - I've got him in a novel and Diggle had him in last weeks Hellblazer...

Never read any Dan Dare material before at all (Not even Morrison's! GAH!) so interested in that one.

POPGUN looks to do the business, so I'm in for that. Didn't know about Casanova being out this week as well.

Might like the scriptbook, too. If I see Hope Falls I'll pick it up too.

Looks like a pretty light week... I'll also be picking up Casanova #11, Madman #5 , Faker #5, and Marvel Zombies 2 #2. Because that shit is ridiculous.

I'll have to pick up the scriptbook, I picked up the DC comics Guide to Comic Writing and Writers on Comic Scriptwriting (vol.1) recently and still do not feel like i know enough about the process to even figure out where to begin.

I'm still waiting on my next issue of The Boys and Madman.

Dan Dare is something that seems like it will be interesting to jump into. It is Ennis after all.

Pop Gun is another, though I'll have to get to that one later as the price tag means it's to much for me right now, with a trip coming up. Though maybe while on my trip, we'll just have to see.

Jonah Hex has been one of my favorites recently. The stories are usually self contained in 1 issue (which is almost never seen anymore) and they're always great. I just read the most recent Conan as well. I still miss Kurt Busiek and Cary Nord on that book.

I have to disagree with the All Star Batman and Robin praise. Jim and Frank are great but that book is a mess.

Following the trend, Dan Dare does look interesting. I'm reading Batman because Morrison's been having fun with Ra's and the kid and all that even if it will probably get written out in a few years. Ultimate Spidey still gets picked up out of habit and Daredevil because i just can't get enough of Brubaker right now. Don't give me that look.

I just read Casanova #10 last night and as usual, I'm chomping at the bit for more. It amazes me just how much Casanova feels like something that's never been done before.

Fear Agent - Hatchet Job #1: Holy crap I love Fear Agent so much. I think Remender describes it best when he calls it "a shotgun blast of adventure."

Crossing Midnight #13 & Faker #5: This book is very much the Vertigo that I enjoy. It seems like a lot of Vertigo books have steered to a more "hip" feel, but I like the dark stories. Gimme old school Vertigo like Swamp Thing, Preacher, Hellblazer (which is still great), etc. By and large Vertigo still kicks a massive amount of ass, but there's a certain something missing from some of the newer titles, although others (ie. Vinyl Underground) have a cool vibe all their own.

Madman Atomic Comics #5: I think we all know how cool Madman is.

Dan Dare #1: I like the pitch of the series and I'll try out anything by Ennis.

I wanna get back into 2000A.D. Anybody getting that these days?

Masked Magician One Shot: I remember this sounding good when I ordered it, here's hoping it is.

I go to the comic shop about once every six months. It's about all the fanboy lovefest I can stand. If I visit the right shop (Hijinx, BlackCat, for instance), I usually walk up to the cash register and leave with a bagful within five minutes.

When I do buy, I ask for recommendations. The last time I visited they gave me graphic novels of 'Wake the Dead', 'Criminal', 'Fables', 'Y the Last Man', and 'Astonishing X-men'.

I'm looking forward to more of 'Fell', 'Black Summer', and 'Doktor Sleepless'. As for anything I'm interested in on the list..? If they hand it to me, I buy it.

Willing consumer sheep, I am.

The only thing I'm going to read this week is Death of the New Gods #3, not because I like it but because I hate it so much. These characters are not even close to the original Jack Kirby series, these kind of characters do not just die off panel. DC has a thing lately about killing characters because they can't come up with a good idea for them. I boycotted DC for a year after they killed Blue Beetle (I'm sure they noticed). So I'll read it and scream at in in anger and generally have a wonderful time hating it.

I'll be grabbing the Fear Agent book for sure. I didn't know Ennis was writing Dan Dare, I'll give that a look as well. Didn't make it in to the shop last week, so I have to grab the latest issue of The Boys as well. Gonna keep the run of AS Batman and Robin going too, just can't not buy it.

Casanova is probably my favorite comic at the moment. It's one sexy book.

I'm intrigued by Dan Dare, but all I know of the concept I learned from the Morrison/Hughes novella.

Mostly waiting for Casanova 11. That book has a lot of the sexy, and the sexy is good.
Also the final volume of Genshiken, even if i'm a little concerned because the last volume i read was very bland.

The sad thing is that my subscription box has more and more manga. But the only good things are written by some guy named Ellis with the occasional Criminal and Casanova, which i really love. Everything else is manga.

To anyone into comics,the recent Moon Knight Annual written by novelist Duane Swierczynski was quite a shock.I thought the monthly series was not all that great,in my opinion.But this was one of the best comics I've read all year.

I picked this up after reading a preview,simple and powerful tale about how a simple encounter with one of these masked vigilantes can empower the everyday individual,in this case a rape victim.

I am really excited about Dan Dare as a concept, but if it's Ennis' typical style I might be a let down. I'm not saying he is a poor writer it's just that very few of his books appeal to me. Sometimes he tries a little too hard to be gritty. I hope it's a little more fun than say The Boys or Punisher, more Emerald Isle or Pilgrim would suit my tastes.

I just found out about the Flying Friar from here and that seems interesting.

So does Springheeled Jack Vol 1 Strange Visitor...

Presents might be a fun romp or utter merde.

A lot of people have shared your sentiment about the Moon Knight monthly and sometimes I feel like it's a little slapdash as well. However, you should check out some of Charlie Huston's novels. They're great reads and it captures his gritty style with a little less of the Khonshu mess.

ah, the new Casanova. That reminds me. Very late on ordering the hardcover. Gave me flashbacks of sorts, but far more glamorous.

Finished that new Goon graphic novel the other day. Liked it, but by far prefer it when it's absurd. Suspicious of a character in straight noir when previous it's been slapstick horror-pulp. Even though it was a complete work, it felt unfinished, like chuckle-worthy hatchet in the head panel should be inserted here and there. Awkward gearshift in tone.

All my DC is Geoff Johns flavoured. My Marvel comes in either JMS or Brubaker/Fraction. Dan Dare will probably be the highlight in the coming month, sharing the centre-stage with the new Suburban Glamour, Faker, and Doktor Sleepless.

TPB purchases will include Casanova (as soon as there's an affordable softcover) and Tom Strong.

a while there, but Andy diggle seems to have brought john back to where he needs to be

I really enjoyed Dan Dare #1 as it happens.

VERY much moving in the same headspace as Ministry Of Space (I might just be thinking this because of Chris Weston and Gary Erskine having worked together a lot before), but that's a good thing. This is the Garth Ennis I like: taut, meaningful adventure, not "LOOK! I JUST SHOWED JESUS SUCKING JEFFREY DAHMER'S COCK!". It's a shame the other one comes out and plays too often.

Robb: how's ennis's take on "midnighter" compared to ellis, millar, and brubaker's "authority" stories? i've not kept up with those characters after the "revolution" books. was considering picking up that new trade.

Ennis' Midnighter had a bit of a comedic vibe to it, e.g. gags about kicking Hitler in the balls, it was trashy fun for a while and the Chris Sprouse art on the first arc was stunning.

Then there were a few single issue stories from different writers and artists, the standout being Special K. Vaughn pulling a Memento, illustrating Midi's 'perception' (well drawn by Darick Robertson).

But the book's found it's voice under current writer Keith Giffen, who's rightly ditched the white suit and shades 'away kit' and is having a bit of fun with America's homeland security obsession and placing the character in situations he can't kill his way out of.

If you like your comic stories to be dark and brief try Murky Depths. Issue #2 is just out. You don't just get strips though, so if you're a purest read no further (Although if you pick up a copy of Murky Depths you might find you're not such a purest after all.). ImagineFX describes Murky Depths as "a new book-cum-magazine with echoes of the great 1950s US horror and sci-fi comics."

Not sure if that description is true but other people have likened it to Heavy Metal, but with high production values. It's UK small press but looks and feels like a pro mag. But then, I am going to say good things about it aren't I?
