The REMAKE/REMODEL meme is one of my favourite things. Artists need a place to show off and Whitechapel should always be It. A handful of entries will be showcased on Bleedingcool at the end of each challenge.

    Mad! Russian! Science!

    THE RULES:

This is for ART ONLY. Any pen-portraits, or crappy scribbles padded-out with words, will cause a deployment of the Urethral Attack Maggots. And a banned account.

No stock-photo manipulation. No half-arsed bollocks. Anything deemed to be piss-takery will be nuked from orbit. Original photography is fine.

No more than ONE submission by any one person.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    BAKTEREV

This one’s about as mental as it gets, but can be summed-up thus:

    MAD! RUSSIAN! SCIENCE!

Bakterev is a nutty scientist created by Pavel Perov for his 1925 pulp novel Bratstvo Viia. I quote the ever-magnificent Jess Nevins:

Bakterev is “a collaborator of the Jewish conspirators who have brought about the Bolshevik Revolution” in Russia--

--so we’re already in some pretty dodgy racist paranoid conspiracy territory, which is always fertile ground for R/R horrors—

He is a leader of the Brotherhood of the Vii and has for years been summoning “dead souls” and implanting them into ectoplasm extracted from living humans. The resulting beings are called “mortomats” and are controlled by the Brotherhood’s machines.

There’s more – like how an Irish-American Reporter, a white-cavalry officer and a Cossack servant ultimately bring down the evil Brotherhood in the Baltic Forests after defeating a legion of Mortomat Roman Soldiers – but I think the angle we want here is purer than that: it’s Soviet Political Skulduggery at the hands of Ectoplasmic Soul-Monsters animated by an Insane Bolshevik Scientist. Only on R/R, baby.

Modernise or futurise, my darlings. Hollywood just decided to remake Bratstvo Viia for today’s feckless audience, and you’re part of the concept team.

    You have two weeks.

    Go.

Now Bakterev is just begging for one of my favourite activities - poking fun at conspiracy theorists....

Feb 17th deadline, so we have to create the mad science to hit the deadline

For as fun as the Pope R/R was, I was too @#$%^ busy to play. @#$%^ "actual paying" work.
I shall endeavor to participate on this one...

This reminds me of that movie Phantasm for some reason.

Really wanted to join in on the Pope remake myself, but just had nothing as far as inspiration went. Thought about it for two weeks and got nothing more interesting than Si's description for it - which is always a good sign you shouldn't bother trying to do better.

The image for this jumped into my brain halfway through my first scan of the challenge.

@Berserker. Yes, sometimes it happens - absolutely nothing comes. Other times something pops to mind, and sometimes that happens immediately. That happened with me in the Pope challenge and now it's happened again. I just need to find the time in my schedule to work on my idea....

Where is everyone? I've never seen an R&R thread so quiet.

    That's a beauty!

@curb; I wanted to make the figures static but the environment liquid. I think I accomplished that without it looking odd. Which was a big win for me. I can't wait to see it get blasted out of the water by our superior artisans.

And now I desperately want to read about the adventures of a Pussy Riot superhero team.

I am so sorry. Upon reading the description this appeared into my head, then I started drawing it and somehow it got worse, and I just had to exorcise it.

I still wanted to tweak the colors a bit but I was doing this on Adobe Flash, which is acting extremely unstable for some reason and threatening to corrupt the entire file (I barely managed to export this image, and it still came out harmed, as visible in larger versions, if you look at the knife glint and the eye.)

@Andre Navarro: never mind, it still looks impressive. Hope you get your Adobe sorted out.
