I think it's pretty hard to tell if you're getting better until you take a look at some of things you were drawing a few years ago and realise they don't look nearly as good as you remember them. I've got some old cartoons that I remember being really happy with but looking at them now they look horrible!

It's my birthday month. 29 years spinning around on a ball. That means a lot of fan art. Not to say there hasn't been a job or two. I'm currently contracted with an iPhone gaming company which is sort of cool. I also still pick up a variety show of gigs from Craigslist. The following was one of those. Guy did a call for an artist. He needed four custom Clue Cards for his proposal. She said yes, by the way. I can't wait to see what this month brings. These threads keep my bulb glowing.

I would say the best suggestion on the limited amount of information that you provided about your situation is use what you got. Go outside (evening or morning), don't be in direct sunlight and take a photo of your art. Did this in a moleskin, so it's a little bit dirty, and there's plenty of pencil slop under the ink that I didn't dare erase, since the paper doesn't really soak up the ink from the fine pen work, and if I did try I'd end up erasing the ink too.

And I agree; this is a tricky vantage point, with the flat of the blade having a center ridge, and coming to a sharp edge side to side. The only other thing I could do would be to angle the reflections along the angle of the blade. I hadn't painted on canvas for about 20 years, so I decided to change it up a little and go back to canvas for a couple of pieces. I started out with no plan and got more of a plan as I went along. I still don't know what the final piece will look like. Maybe the face will be in there, maybe it won't...we'll see.
