    You can't domesticate otters, they can be friendly to humans when they are young but as they mature into adults their wild nature comes out and they become quite vicious.

    I wish I knew more about domestication - the history, theory and practice. It seems so odd to me that there are some species that just get along with humans, and some that don't, and that's just how it is...

    When I was a kid, my favourite book was The True Story Of Okee The Otter, written by NJ librarian Dorothy Wisbeski.

    Cats, for example, we claim as domesticated. But it takes one BBC documentary team a single month to prove otherwise...
  2.  (11024.7)
    @Finagle - A lot of it is selective breeding over centuries. Species that get on well with humans are mostly that way because humans have looked after the friendly ones and killed the unfriendly ones.

    Researchers in Russia have spent decades breeding two lines of rats, one selected for tameness, the other for aggressiveness. The tame ones love humans, the aggressive ones will try and kill you.

    The same team have tried the same methods with foxes. The friendly foxes have mottled fur, rounded ears and wag their tails - traits that are usually thought of as dog-like.

    So with a few decades of breeding you could probably produce domesticated otters. It would just - given their aquatic habitat - be ridiculously expensive and a serious pain in the arse.

    @ Purple Wyrm - So what you're saying is that we need to set up a Kickstarter for the domestication of otters? I'd like to think the internet could manage that...

    @Jamie Heron

    I'm saying we need to set up a Kickstarter for the domestication of otters, and divert some of the funds into secretly breeding an army of hyper-aggressive death-otters which we can hand over to Uncle Warren to do with as he sees fit.

    @ Purple Wyrm - what I take from that is that Vladimir Putin already has an army of hyper-aggressive death-rats that he is waiting to unleash.

    @Osmosis

    And hyper-aggressive death-foxes! Which (if the Daily Mail is to be believed) he's already released on Britain! We're clearly doomed! DOOOMMMED!

    Speaking as a veteran Dungeons and Dragons player and occasional Dungeon Master, I can confirm that this is exactly what game sessions are like. I can’t count the number of times I ordered my players to murder small children!

    Dungeons and Dragons - Satan's Game
    I’d like to get back into it, but I can’t find my sinister robe anywhere. Additionally the cost of candles these days is ridiculous.

    That sound you can hear is Alan Moore cursing to glycon anyone involved, but I kinda really hope it works:

    League of Extraordinary Gentlemen gets one more shot as a TV show

    THR is reporting that Michael Green (who worked on Kings and The River) is signed on as producer and writer for this potential TV show. And if all goes according to plan, Erwin Stoff (The Matrix, Kings) will join him later on as another producer.
