Not sure if this should go here or the Videogame thread but Gabe pretty much admits that doing Dickwolves and everything after was a massive fuck up.

What do you guys think, do you buy it or do you think this is an apology of circumstance?

Is this is what he thought, then this is what he should have said on stage. I'm not buying it, and neither is the author of the article I linked to earlier.

    Deleted-Was not constructive.

Double edit: to be clear my comment referenced how long the modern Batwoman had been around, had nothing to do with poor choices, rape jokes, or dickwolves.

World War 3 could break out next week and here I am making three posts about Batwoman.

So I read up on the character. She was originally introduced to prove Batman is NOT homosexual. A sign of times changing.

I still, honestly, really don't understand how the Dickwolves thing was ever a controversy. I mean, I get how their handling of it was bad and that they should have left it alone, but I don't understand how, to begin with, someone read a comic that had someone mention being raped by dickwolves and then got offended. There's plenty of media that takes rape too lightly, that too readily uses it as a plot device, that acts as propaganda for rape-apologists, but dickwolves was never any of that. It was very, incredibly, clearly a joke.

    Also, I liked the shirts.

And it was, very incredibly, a rape joke. If you don't know see how that, or the shirts derived from it, could be offending, i can do nothing for you.
    • CommentTimeSep 6th 2013
To clarify, when I first saw the shirts it was out of context, and enjoy it more as a parody of sports merchandise than as some sort of statement.

And yes, it was a rape joke. I understand how that can be a trigger for some people. But unless a rape joke perpetuates or trivializes rape, than the argument you're making is that no one should ever make a joke about rape ever. Which you're free to do, I'll just never agree.

For me, the Dickwolf strip was clearly trivializing rape.

DJ, the issue isn't really about the comic itself, which I personally feel is a fun parody on MMOs and the mechanics of the mission. I get the joke.

It's what came after which is the issue. It COULD have stayed as a one-off comic that offended some people, but in response to the criticism of it, Gabe decided to make jokes at the expense of rape survivors. A half-assed apology was made along with several conversations on twitter where he was completely unrepentant and made fun of rape survivors. This wasn't helped by Gabe's supporters, who responded to criticisms with actual rape threats.

The shirts were made in response to the anger of rape survivors. It was intended to be offensive and as a way to say "fuck you".

So while the joke kicked things off, it was the shitstorm afterwards and Gabe's constant mishandling of it, along with his behaviour in MANY more instances, that got things to where they are now.

Despite Gabe saying that pulling the merch was a way of engaging, I'd say it was making the merch in the first place that was engaging.

And as for not getting how anyone can be offended by a rape joke, even that one...I don't even.

It's time for science fiction to face up to discrimination

"Science fiction loves a good paradox. Here's one for you: how can a genre that dreams up alien cultures and mythic races in such minute detail seemingly ignore the ethnic, religious, gender and sexual diversity right here on the home planet, here in the real world?

In other words, for a school of writing that swims so deeply in the unconventional, why is science fiction and fantasy so darned conventional?"

Gabe and Tycho were meant to be on this weeks Tabletop, which didn't appear yesterday when it was supposed to.

Bet there's some fun going on behind the scenes with that right now.

No, I get how people can be offended by rape jokes. I totally understand that! And as I was going to elaborate on that point, I had a bunch of jumbled thoughts so I'm just going to put out a few points:
-Dickwolves to me is absurdist humour, which isn't really offensive.
-Getting rid of the 'by dickwolves', however, makes the joke pretty offensive, and that's not a significant distinction, so I get that.
-However, if the line was beaten by fistwolves, the joke wouldn't have been quite as strong, but there would be no controversy. Also a very minor distinction.

As for their actions afterwards, I'm really just not informed enough to touch any of it., but I'm never going to defend making fun of rape survivors.

I read the strip out of context, and I interpreted it as a scathing critique (through absurdist parody) of the carelessness of video game companies and the community at large with regards to extreme violence (sexual violence included).

    For what it's worth.

It sounds like they've maaaaaassively mishandled the aftermath, but the original strip, to me, showed an impatience with the existing paradigms in video game culture. And I wish that's how they had discussed it. And Dickwolves shirts would have been funny if they were making fun of douchey sports culture (WHICH ARGUABLY THEY COULD HAVE BEEN BUT IT'S LIKELY THAT NO ONE INVOLVED IN MAKING THE T-SHIRTS WAS THAT SELF AWARE).

Experimental compound cures learning disabilities, restores brain size in mice designed to mimic Down syndrome symptoms.

Important to note: compound not yet tested in humans, but totally acts on the Sonic Hedgehog pathway. Yes, that's a thing. Its manipulation is also helpful in the treatment of some cancers. Also interesting to note: medical treatments for Down syndrome are actually kind of controversial since people think of it as just a way that people are different that should be celebrated, since many with Down syndrome live really full, happy lives. They just tend to be less physically healthy due to the complications from having an extra chromosome (plus the intellectual impairment).

Anyway, I thought it was interesting.

Because the class war wasn't truly obvious yet, Tories to force 1 million of the lowest-paid working poor into indoctrination courses, threaten with cut in benefits, because "they aren't working enough".

Hello poor and under-privileged, We have a whip for you and we will also give you training on how to whip yourself.

'Britain may be a small island, but I would challenge anyone to find a country with a prouder history, a bigger heart or greater resilience'
    - David Cameron
Invention of Concentration Camps, see above, greater resilience?!?!?!.

'Britain is an island that helped to abolish slavery'
    - David Cameron
We also profited greatly form it when it was all the rage.

'We are very proud of everything we do as a small island – a small island that has the sixth-largest economy, the fourth best-funded military, some of the most effective diplomats, the proudest history'
    - David Cameron
    Oh for fuck sake.

Someone needs to give this man a history book, actually any book may do, how about The Wizard of Oz?

This is off the back of Russia saying that we were 'a small unimportant island that no-one listens to anymore'

Which is actually a pretty accurate description.
  3.  (11025.18)

I know I'm going to regret this. David Cameron is an ass, and I'm not defending him.

But, as usual, the complexity of the game Putin is playing has been oversimplified by journalists (now calm down, Spider Jerusalem fans, the real Spider Jerusalem had more in common with folks on the fringe than what passes for mainstream press these days).

It is common for diplomats to attempt to dismiss their chief opponent. Putin's direct opponent in the current struggle for resources is actually not Obama. Putin is trying to preserve his monopoly on natural gas being delivered to all of Europe.

Four factions within Britain can't stand this monopoly. They also happen to be the four groups that will benefit the most from the war that was just put on hold by the Parliament.

The European oligarchs hate Putin personally.

The central bankers have lost Putin as a client and want him either back in business or destroyed. That may need some explanation. The physical assets are located in Switzerland. But the head of the beast, the brain has another name. That's right, you guessed it, tax-free: the City of London Corporation.

The crown knows patriotism is good for business.

And, of course, the war hawks need something that will prevent their budget from being slashed further.

These are the groups that David Cameron actually represents. These are the groups that actually want this war. Don't get me wrong, the American war hawks have already marked Iran and Syria for death to help their client Israel. But the distribution of the spoils has not been decided.

Putin is attempting to make what he said true. But acting like what goes on in Britain simply does not matter is to miss the point. Britain IS the point.

Because it's ridiculously apt to Cameron's waffle...
