    That amplituhedron article is great. Christ knows what it means, but it seems cool.

    Also, wasn't there a similar claim a year or so ago about "high altitude organisms = alien life"? I think it was related to a "mysterious red rain" (somewhere n South East Asia?) which I feel locates it solidly in Fortean Territory.

    PCBs cause birds to sing a different tune:
    "the team found these species' songs varied predictably based on their PCB load, and also based upon the type of PCBs."

    Conjurs up a fragment of the postapocalyptic environment... You move through the wasteland, closer to the river, and the birdsong starts to warp and warble like a melting cassette tape. This must be the place...

    The Moon Is 100 Million Years Younger Than Thought
    And
    Jack the Ripper mystery solved by top detective after 125 years

    HOWEVER. Read the entire article. The whole thing is misleading. They claim he never existed, but the Detective found the actual killer, who turned out to be far worse and more well traveled than the original Jack the Ripper mythos. So it's not that he never existed, it's that someone coined the name Jack The Ripper, forged a letter and they never caught him. Misleading article is misleading.

    Pseudonymous sorehead in Portland, OR posts flyers with lists of residents who get food stamps "and who vote."

    So, if an out-of-control dog catcher's wagon rammed into the crowd at a Tea Party rally and smashed "Artemis of the Wildland's" arms and legs and the poor sap had to go on public assistance, he should have his voting rights taken away?

    Godspeed You! Black Emperor issues their statement on winning Canada's 2013 Polaris Music Prize. Will put cultural arbitration in perspective re: everything else in the world.

    @Purple - that's the one!

    @Miranda's - god bless GSY!BE.

    in terms of pith, however, it's behind their legendary exchange with a Belgian (?) music magazine:

    Q: How would you describe your music?

    A: We don't. That's your job.

    @StefanJ

    Oh, no, the person would rationalize that it's totally ok for them to still be able to vote because they *clearly* need such public assistance; it's everyone else who is a fucking mooch. I can't tell you the number of times I've had some similar refrain screeched at me by some fluff-brained moron. That or the person who is against socialism while on unemployment assistance.

    @Miranda's Eyes - talking to people at work Tues morning was odd, as we're the ones that brought in the corp. sponsor to this year's Polaris, and I'm actually scheduled to edit the tv broadcast of the event next week. Personally, i think they (GSY!BE) made some very valid points (and they are using the money for a very cool thing).

    From a link on Oldhat's telepathic rape page. BTW, those pictures of the suspects just fit perfectly.

    Sen. Mike Lee should be spanked and sent back to school.

    @Greasemonkey So first we had Bath Salts making people behave like zombies and now Krokodil has made landfall stateside and we'll have people actually looking like the living dead. I remember reading about Krok a few years ago and was horrified by it. It's a terrifying drug.

    RoboCop statue to guard Detroit after successful Kickstarter campaign
    The 10ft tall statue will be unveiled next summer after the project, which has the backing of original RoboCop star Peter Weller, raised $67,436 in just six days on the crowdfunding site in 2011, according to the Hollywood Reporter. It all began when a Twitter user publicly messaged Detroit's mayor, Dave Bing, to demand his favourite movie character be celebrated as one of the city's most famous exports. Bing replied: "There are not any plans to erect a statue to RoboCop. Thank you for the suggestion." But the idea quickly caught on with other users, and Facebook user John Leonard started a group called "Build a statue of RoboCop in Detroit" which further expanded interest.

    Faking of scientific papers on an industrial scale in China
    As China tries to take its seat at the top table of global academia, the criminal underworld has seized on a feature in its research system: the fact that research grants and promotions are awarded on the basis of the number of articles published, not on the quality of the original research. This has fostered an industry of plagiarism, invented research and fake journals that Wuhan University estimated in 2009 was worth $150m, a fivefold increase on just two years earlier.
