Chang'e 3 has entered lunar orbit. If all goes to plan, the spacecraft will make an orbital adjustment on the 10th, land on the 14th, and begin roving on the 15th.

A good post on the subject from the Planetary Society's Emily Lakdawalla, including some great Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter images of the presumed landing site.

    Oh fuck, Colin Wilson died.

Huge influence on me as a weird kid dealing with the paranormal. Vast amounts of his books - The Occult, The Space Vampires, A Criminal History Of Mankind, the Gerard Sorme trilogy, so many others - basically got me through my teens (along with the other Wilson, Robert Anton).

82 years old and over a hundred works is a hell of a run, though.

is anyone following the student protests here in the UK?
turns out that the court order prohibiting students entering the university buildings including senate house uses a map that is older than senate house.

    court order here

Apparently the sign language interpreter at Nelson Mandela's memorial service was just "flapping his arms around" and now no one can find out who he actually was...

Mandela memorial sign language interpreter a 'fraud'

"He wasn't even doing anything, There was not one sign there. Nothing. He was literally flapping his arms around." The interpreter, who translated eulogies including those of US President Barack Obama and Mandela's grandchildren, looked as if he was "trying to swat a few flies away from his face and his head".

Chang'e 3 has landed successfully on the Moon

The rover is set to deploy this evening (around 9pm UTC, though almost everything so far has happened ahead of schedule). The rover and lander are supposed to take photographs of each other sometime tomorrow.

I guess Warren was right. The next people on the moon aren't speaking English.

Shia LaBeouf blatantly plagiarizes Dan Clowes in short movie

Failed comic book creator Shia LaBeouf, who we understand was in some movies once, has just released a short film titled HowardCantour.com. The film, directed by LaBeouf, follows the emotional trials and tribulations of an online film critic as he struggles with the frustrations of his chosen profession, including the emotional conflict of hero-worship and interacting with other bloggers, among other annoyances. Starring Jim Gaffigan as Howard Cantour, the film is seemingly and adaptation of Justin M. Damiano, a short story by cartoonist Daniel Clowes.

Clowes, the creator of the graphic novel Ghost World, has seen his work adapted to the screen in the past. The difference this time? It would appear that LaBeouf, in no way, shape or form, had permission from Clowes to adapt his work, nor does he credit him anywhere in the film. In fact, the two have never even spoken.

The film, which was posted online earlier today but has since been removed, shares several similarities with Clowes’ short story, with lines that are lifted directly from the comic. Yet in an interview with the website Short of the Week, LaBeouf, who has been accused of plagiarism in the past, claims to have come up with the concept for the film organically, having been inspired by negative reviews he received for his lackluster comics work, as well as the films he has reportedly appeared in:

“I know something about the gulf between critical acclaim and blockbuster business. I have been crushed by critics (especially during my Transformers run), and in trying to come to terms with my feelings about critics, I needed to understand them. As I tried to empathize with the sort of man who might earn a living taking potshots at me and the people I’ve worked with, a small script developed.”

Labeouf has since apologized via Twitter and acknowledged that he "fucked up".

I don't know... How could he imagine, for an instant, that he wouldn't get caught, if it was so obvious ? What's going on in this guy's head ?

It's pretty sad. It's like you're at a party and this guy suddenly start jerking off in public and people are all "Ew dude, WTF are you doing?" and suddenly he gets that look in his eyes like he just remembered that he wasn't supposed to do that, how could I even forget what the hell is happening to me oh my God everybody saw me fuck fuck fuck God I need help....

I still think Shia is Spielberg's illegitimate son and the casting in movies was a payoff.
