I was the one asking for this and it got me thinking about the UNIQUE design problems
    of Designing Desktop Wallpapers.

Basically leaving enough room for the folders/program shortcuts on the desktop
    Not to be Obscured-

    Here's an example with notes:

Example of Designing for Desktop wallpapers

Here's a comics example with a character left to one side to leave enough space
    for your folders/shortcuts:

Example of good desktop wallpaper design

I suppose you don't have to put everything to one side , but the FOCAL elements
should usually be to one side and drawing you towards there.

    Here's a photographic/graphics example:

    I use frames from developed-and-digitized 35mm film.

@arklight - I'm a big fan of "everything to one side!". I keep all my folders on the right side, so at the most I just have to flip an image. It is annoying when there's text, but eh, minor annoyance compared to having too much central stuff.

Also I go to the archives.

Especailly the 35mm film. That's the sort of wonderful lateral
    thinking that's great on here!

Oh yes please, Allana, and everyone else please put your name in the wallpapers and
    your site link ,eg:

Especially now we have THIS NONESENSE over here ,
discussed in the strange informus thread

Plus It won't do any harm to anyone who wants to see where these
wallpapers come from if they get "orphaned" from the thread. They might even
get to see your great photos...:-)..

Or stop people passing off your work as their own
as has happened to Mr Paul Sizer.

This is mine (I didn't design it), but I try and keep my desktop pristine with no icons (Unless I have sticky notes up, in which case it looks like a post it note factory has vomited on my screen).

heres a link to an older piece i made that i think would make a good wallpaper.

So I made one from a logo redesign I was playing with years ago:

I tend to have my icons clustered in the corners (upper left for system stuff, lower left for graphics shortcuts (GIMP, Blender, flickr uploader, etc), upper right for folders, wastebasket in in lower right, with a cluster of games stuff in the upper center, so usually an image with a strong central focal point works best for my wallpaper.

So for a while it was this:

Reversed lens macro shot of my own eye.

    But right now it's this:

Breaking the central focus rule, but I need a constant reminder to keep going with Blender and Source FIlmmaker.

    Forgot: Work wallpaper is this:

Hey, I got a tablet thingie for Christmas so I made some wallpaper-ready versions of some of my stock photography. They're all 1920x1498 so should suit most wallpaper needs.

    in celebration

They're all hosted on Google Drive if you want to browse through.
