    The new Kickstarter is at: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1513061270/reaper-miniatures-bones-ii-the-return-of-mr-bones

    I started painting miniatures in the late 70s. They varied a lot in quality, but the very best of them pale, in design and technique, to the "bones." It is daunting . . . humbling. I don't know if I can do them justice, and I've not painted with acrylics on plastic before.

    I backed the Bones kickstarter and have put them away until such time as I can paint them. I had a look through them when they arrived. The sculpts are great, my only concern is the flexibility of some of the parts. I worry that paint would crack and peel if the parts flex during play.

    @StefanJ

    I know what you mean. I'm waiting until I have a place to put them all before I unpack them.

    @Kradlum

    If you use a clear paint sealant that could help stiffen them up.

    On topic for a change, anyone get any tabletop games for Christmas? Friends got me a card/tile-laying game called Build an Elder God and the Kickstarter my wife pledged for me for the Study in Emerald game arrived two days before Christmas.

    Boardgames! Yes.

    I got RoboRally! A blast from my past that I didn't even know was still available for purchase.

    I got the Locke & Key Card Game!
    And I've finally started enjoying Settlers of Catan (the people that use to always try to get me to play would house-rule things and it would change as we went... it was horrible; the new people are much more fun...)

    House rules are bullshit unless they are explained clearly at the beginning of the game and upheld through the course of it. Calvin Ball is only fun if you agree that's the game you're going to play.

    I'm pretty sick of Settlers. Played it way too much, I think. The game is far too reliant on the dice rolls; if the dice are against you, you're basically out of the game and there is nothing you can do about it, and the settlement placing at the beginning doesn't do enough to offset that (don't get me wrong, I love chance in my games, but Settlers isn't the best use of it).

    That's mostly just a pet peeve from someone who's way too into game design, though. It's still a fun game.

    I got Cosmic Encounter for Christmas (also, one of the expansions)! I have yet to play with my copy, but I played a couple games of it at our local board game cafe (because apparently we have one of those now) and I fell in love with it. The core rules are pretty simple, but there are random alien powers thrown into the mix that break the game in strange and interesting ways.

    There's an expansion for Catan that replaces the dice rolls with a card drawing mechanic so that instead of being totally random you know that the number of times each number comes up is exact.

    That sounds like it would be a great improvement. I had no idea that existed.

    I still have my original Cosmic Encounter set, from the late 70s!

    * * *

    I finished incorporating play tester comments into my solitaire RPG adventure, Down & Out & Under. It is for the classic Tunnels & Trolls system, which is about to get a new version.

    Your character is a youth who goes to the big city to seek fame and fortune and learn magic. Due to a mugging along the way, he or she reaches the city wearing a barrel and carrying a rusty orc sword. Thus, the Down & Out part of the title.

    I bought myself the Fate Core System as a Christmas/Birthday present, and I have to say, it may be the most comfortable and natural role-playing game I've ever encountered. My business partner and co-designer (and, you know, Supreme Friend, that's important, too) got the Savage Worlds system for herself around the same time, and said pretty much the same thing about that system.

    I've got this feeling that RPGs in general are going through a really great process of self-simplification and experimentation at the same time. And that makes me absurdly happy, both as a designer and a player.

    Over the last month or so my friends and I have actually figured out how to win at Arkham Horror. Now we're going to try introducing a Herald and see how horribly we all die :)

    Savage Worlds seems pretty legit. Our local gaming shop is getting ready to run a short campaign. I've heard tons of great things about Fate, but never have looked to far into it.

    I recently got in all the Kcikstarter loot from Mantis for Deadzone. I've assembled my Mauraders group and am looking to tear up the future. I think it'll scratch my old Necromunda itch, as it is campaign style sic-fi skirmish. But the mechanics look cool. Going to try my first game tomorrow before hopping back into Star Trek Attack Wing organized play.

    Happy gaming folks.

    I played a game that absolutely charmed me the other day. It's called "Tsuro." It's got an Asian them, but it's essentially tiles with paths on them that you draw and play each turn. You're trying to keep yourself on the board for as long as possible while trying to run the other players off or into each other.

    We also had some laughs playing We Didn't Play Test This At All. Super funny game. Kind of a card game version of Calvin Ball or something. I love quick little games like these.
