Without wanting to get bogged down in semantic wank, I think it's worth making the distinction between games-as-art and artful games.

I would rather play something that is artfully crafted and has no ambitions towards meaning, than something that strives to have meaning and ends up being, as said above, bad art. @andycon , I sense you were probably joking about Super Mario World but, in all seriousness, for me that's an example of a truly artful game that succeeds without any higher meaning.

I read 'artful' as 'awful' and blood started coming out of everywhere....

Can't find the comment but someone excused the female art's sexist nature as just "part of the aesthetic". Sure, it might be, but that doesn't make it any less sexist.

@andycon Had I been saying Super Mario World was awful, then that blood would be totally justified!

I'm pretty late to the game, and I dismissed it as not-for-me at first glance, but a friend gave it to me a few weeks ago. FTL is really fun. I'm not even sure why exactly, but I keep playing ... and playing ... and playing.

@RenThing: I could not agree more. The same goes for the subtly racist overtones to Dragon Crown's class system, as well as many other arguments in defence of some fairly despicable parts of gamer culture. (Homework: read up on the arguments about games with female leads don't sell and how the harassment is part of fighting game culture and write a 300 word essay on how they are flawed). Unrelated: I found this article while looking for sources (context: the "female protagonists don't sell" original got sparked by the Booker-heavy cover art for Bioshock Infinite) The real problem with Bioshock Infinite's Box Art

Also, I think there is a case that can be made for differentiating "bad" art from "uninteresting" art, where "uninteresting art" forms the majority of things created that don't have any sort of higher message attempted, whereas "bad" art makes the attempt, but fails dramatically at it. There are a lot of games that fall on either side of that line. I wouldn't call Super Mario World bad art, but I would call it uninteresting. (Again, I'm just kinda fielding ideas here).

Pac-man and Space Invaders are *already* older than 20 years, and are still pretty well known in the public consciousness, and will still be talked about decades from now.

The games industry is here. Has been here for most of my life. Is going nowhere.

Deal with us. You can't get rid of us now.

If we're going to be unhappy at crap sexism in games, I'd like to be annoyed at one that's properly obnoxious-

Not that you could tell, but it's going to be a side-scrolling fighter.

Hooo shit. Just played my first game of Papers Please. IT'S A TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE GAME, in a totally awesome way. In short - I stamped the hell out of peoples' passports, there were more and more information to correlate and check (issuing city, issuing district, passport number, height, weight, entry interview etc...), I couldn't keep up, started making mistakes, my family started getting hungry, sick and cold since I couldn't make enough money, and in the end my whole family died of a sickness I couldn't afford the cure for, and I got fired since I wasn't obviously a good enough worker.

    ...damn. I need a hug.

    @flabyo, HA!

Still getting through Last of Us which is pretty damn fun and engaging.

Over the weekend, as I said, I picked up Dark Souls and got through the first level. It took a damn long time and a lot of stubbornness on my part, but...I beat that first boss and felt damned accomplished. I'm really looking forward to digging in to that game.

I rewarded myself for having a bad day the other day by buying Cube World. It's the blockiness of Minecraft without the digging, and you hit monsters with weapons in a world that extends randomly forever. It's about exploration and pretty landscapes with creatures to pummel, and while it's still in alpha, there's a good amount of content in there if all you want to do is set out to see the world. Turns out that was exactly what I was in the mood for, although staying up until 6AM playing wasn't part of the original plan.

Only drawback is that the dodge move is mapped to Mouse 3/scroll wheel, and I don't have one. Trackball 4 life!

I picked up the latest XCom during the Steam summer sale and I've been totally digging it. I'm playing through it once on "easy", in that I'm saving frequently and not really letting a few core squaddies die, before I go back and play for reals. Enjoying the hell out of the class mechanics and the fact that the aliens can't just rocket your transport and wipe out half your guys on round one. One of my three bad ass Assaults just got psychic powers, mwuhahahahaha.

Just finished Saints Row: The Third. About the time you hijack a plane in midair, drive a tank out of it, start a zombie outbreak and work for Mayor Burt Reynolds you realize this game is awesome. I'm looking forward to the fourth installment-

On paper, Saints Row IV is easily one of the dumbest games I've played, with a story that sounds like something a fourteen year old would come up with after you give him a case of Red Bull and a stack of the dumbest movies from the 90s. It's also mindlessly, stupidly fun with everyone involved from the developers to the voice actors clearly having a blast making it. I fought alongside Keith David while dressed like Rowdy Roddy Piper, threw bobble-headed mascots into walls with my mind, shot aliens with Robocop's guns, and jumped between buildings like I was the Tick. For all of that, Saints Row IV is easily an Editors' Choice.

    PCMAG review.

Also getting back into Ducktales, and bought Dragon Crown (Which, btw, if you haven't seen the art it's borderline NSFW. It's like an Art Director went to a meeting and said "GIVE ME MASSIVE TITS. EVERYWHERE.") But the game is great and a lot of fun. I still haven't got psychic powers in Xcom, I keep losing countries. But hey, my Assault guy Victor "Murderhands" Ripface is shotgunning the crap out of things.

Double Fine's Middle Manager of Justice finally released on Android. It is really super-compulsive to play. I'm curious about how well the monetization of it has worked out for them, since you basically spend money on two different types of in-game currency.
