My wife has a business trip planned for Brussels in the first week of October and, wanting to take advantage of only having to pay for one plane ticket, I'm going to fly out and meet her. Currently our plans are to see Brussels, Bruge, Gent, Waterloo, and travel to the Westvleteren Brewery. We might make a side-trip down to Dunkirk if we have a chance.

Anyone have any other suggestions for things to see/do in Belgium?

I went to Brussels and Bruge last year and loved it.

The comic museum is lovely - beautiful building, nice exhibits; fun. I wasted a lot of time in comic shops over there though so maybe don't do a lot of that. (The Tin-Tin shop is a bit cool though)

The EU Parlamentarium is a glorious work of propaganda and worth a visit if such a thing interests you.

Believe it or not the Atomium is actually worth a look just 'cause it's big and shiny (the Mini-Europe beside it is silly but cute fun).

Bruge is fabulous but it would be worth having a plan as to what sites, museums and gallery's you'll want to hit 'cause it's easy to "waste" time just wandering around and then discovering - oh shit I could have seen X but now it's closed.

CHOCOLATE! And from a regular supermarket not a tourist trap - I bought loads and still regret not buying more!!!

@TF - Thank you for the suggestions. My wife and I are going to get a few travel books and settle in for an evening of reading and planning one of these nights; we did something similar when we hit up Florence and found some nice museums (like the Stibbert) that we wouldn't have found otherwise.

@Oldhat - If I could I would. I have a feeling you'd probably be a good traveling companion and would get along well with the wife. Plus then I'd have another person to geek out with about beers.
