It's Thursday! It's mid-afternoon in London! It's another wrongheaded morning in Mericky! It's who-the-fuck-knows-when in Australia! It's time for more Crossed Hideosity!

    Episode 58, live and free-to-air.

Remember: Not safe for work, not safe for minors, not safe for people of a nervous disposition, not safe for OTPub, not safe for Sammerbash, not safe for entrancement.

is it me, or was the Nun crying when she was telling Selene that "this was all for Shaky?" that was sort of disturbing, I didn't know how to feel about it.

re: the Boxer, I'm still not convinced he's crossed. he shows way too much restraint around living breathing humans, and the fact that he SAVES them instead of attacks them is huge. remember, infected crossed do not have the ability to hold back their instinctual desires of rapemurderkill (unless there's a Head Crossed around to stop them like Horsecock). but he has been showing much more restraint and prowess, even when he isn't with the Nun. doesn't make sense to me.
it would make more sense to me that he's uninfected and wearing the getup to NOT become infected - however then why would he rapemurderkill the old lady? (she wasn't infected either so technically he could do... that... and still be uninfected. but the "why" is there.)
re: the Nun, I'm confused at how she can be Crossed without having the actual "plus-face" rash. I'm still bewildered about this. I guess she is since we've seen her have sex with the infected and her speaking voice is in "Crossed red" but still... sup wit dat?

    >we've seen her have sex with the infected

Have we? I don't remember that.

My argument for her being crossed would rather be her using gloves (the boxing one, although how did the hit with it manage not to infect Seline, I don't know, and then the normal one).

    So. So so so.

This episode finally confirms what has been only hinted at before. The Sister is a full-blown demonic queen of the damned. People wonder why the dentist was killed. Because this is horror, of course.

STILL having a hard time reconciling Shaky's note. He sent her a warning for why, again? I don't believe his explanation. I think his real motivation is darker.

'Course, him and Abbott and Costello are only plotting the destruction of an entire drift fleet, so maybe darkness is relative.

Theory: The red Crossedspeak font is simply a symptom of being Crossed... But you can do Crossedspeak without actually being Crossed.

Theory part 2: Neither the Sister or Trashbag Mummy are Crossed. However, they've both been driven crazy. Call it a really horrible version of Stockholm syndrome. They're not too crazy to take away some self-preservation - Trashbag Mummy is wrapped up to protect him from being actually infected, while the Sister is simply immune.

Alternate theory part 2: While the Sister is immune and with Crossedholm syndrome, Trashbag Mummy IS Crossed, but he's been wrapped up like that to prevent others from being infected. He's been trained like a dog: He himself can't get out of that outfit, so all his acts of "compassion" are simply done for those morsels of reward - like when she takes his glove off and lets him go berserk on the dentist.

Speaking of the Sister, she's either immune or simply infected with a mutation of the Crossed virus/parasite/whatever. There's no way you wander around naked in the middle of Crossed, getting femurs (which have been chewed clean by Crossed) shoved up your intimate parts, without getting exposed to the infection.

The Nun was definitely crying at that last bit. This issue hit that incredible nexus of weird / horror / deeply sad that has been the hallmark of the best Crossed stories. Shaky was leaving the letters after he heard Tabitha's story about how she was able to reach at least a part of the person a Crossed had formerly been. Shaky was trying to keep her safe / speak to her human remnant. The killing at the start showed that you cannot forget what she is now, but there does remain a shred of her former self, and it still loves Shaky. I am guessing she will at some point find out about Shaky and Tab and that will be all she wrote. Oh, and the Trashbag Mummy is Crossed, confirmed by Si a long time ago. We don't know yet why he is wrapped up.
  5.  (11145.7)
Well, I think all Si confirmed earlier was that the Trashbag Mummy is supposed to be speaking with a Crossed font.

And since the Crossed font simply defines a way of speaking, there's nothing to say that speaking like Crossed means you are Crossed.

    @dirtynouveau @twentythoughts

It's odd, we did see Si confirm that the Mummy was supposed to be speaking Crossed, yet the last few chapters have went out of its way to suggest that he might not be crossed. He normally wears boxing gloves when killing crossed, goes with barehands when killing an uninfected, and wears a mask and other protective clothing at all times. If you were uninfected and trying to infiltrate a crossed group for a long period of time, that's what you would go with.

On the nun -- the thing that jumped out to me is that while the Crossed font is there, the shade of the type is less "red." Almost a red/purple blend. This could be just an accident or suggest that she's something different from a boss crossed (who from memory also have the same color type). She could be uninfected, immune, and brainwashed (she would have to probably be immune since she's had so much unfiltered interaction with the Crossed, including eating what probably is a a Crossed body part). Like the Crossed grabbed her, saw the X mark and figured she was Crossed (appearing Crossed works on Crossed from what we've seen in Badlands), and the Nun mentally cracked and psychologically adapted to act like she was crossed. Sort of like Stockholm syndrome in the Crossed universe. Another option is that the same weirdness (biological?) that allows her to be a Crossed Boss also has her not manifest the face Cross. In this, should would be unique from the other crossed bosses we've seen. Finally, the X cut in may have interfered with manifesting of a face cross, and maybe even more. Or it could just all be random noise.

Speculation is fun and probably pointless.

The variety of Crossed behavior aside from the default rapemurderkill is one of the most interesting aspects of the series. Sort of like how no hope, no rescue is an absolute but the horrors themselves have unlimited possibilities.

And yeah, I agree, I think she was crying in that panel. Considering that she was genuinely a very good person and had been bottling up her feelings towards Shaky while they were traveling and seeing how evil and twisted she is now, its terribly sad. I keep on being reminded of Shaky's babymomma's story (sorry too lazy to look up the name) about her student.

After all the swerves with the fleet, I've given up trying to guess what Team Shaky is going to do next.

I'm milking a suspicion that our garbage bag mummy is the Gameskeeper, crossed or not (I suspect not.)

The "requesting permission to rape" behavior and his laugh when we first see him stalking Shaky's crew are the best evidence I've got.

Maybe he's a "boss crossed" and she's immune, and they've teamed up?

@twentythoughts is it only to denote a way of speaking? Actually I don't know. Is the font canonical for being truly infected? I think the only similar case was in Psychopath 5 where they pretended to be crossed. The font was normal not the red, crossed font. Christ I am a fucking nerd lol.

In the Fatal Englishman arc in Badlands, Ennis made it clear that 'false' crosses do not confuse the Crossed. I guess the same woudl apply to X facial injuries. The nun is crossed, albeit one of the 'variant' ones that come along every now and again, her being epileptic has probably played a part in the atypical behaviour. Re the boxing glove person, it could be Ashook but I personally feel the identity is just a big McGuffin and is someone totally unknown. As the nun seems to show some sort of 'affection' to Boxing Glove guy, he might be Ashook.

No doubt all will be revealed in good time.

@blighty, Don't worry, I noticed that too. I'd take it as read for now that only the crossed speak red.

@No Fear, I don't suppose Ennis was really being specific as to whether it was alluded to being just the cross alone which didn't fool them, or the whole idea of pretending to be crossed. In Psychopath, the facecrossed mistook some characters for being infected, enough so that they attacked the next group (the bloodcrossed) they came across (so to speak).
I'd say just standing there with a red cross on ye face and yelling "FUCK AND SHIT" isn't particularly convincing regardless, but actions speak louder than words to them. I wonder, if the crossed were on one side of an impassible ravine and used binoculars to observe a group of uninfected "play-acting" across the way (i.e. disguised as crossed and pretending to rape and kill passers-by) would they be convinced or still compelled to investigate closer? This is assuming they aren't led nominally by some kinda bosscrossed.

Not WYWH related but really looking forward to Garth's 7 part arc starting in Badlands #50, detailing the initial outbreak and how things quickly went out of control. End of interlude :-)

However, what I saw or heard about of the Quisling arc seemed to directly contradict The Fatal Englishmen about people disguising themselves as Crossed. I'm not sure if everyone writing the series is on exactly the same page yet so to speak.
  7.  (11145.15)
I don't see why there has to be a rule about what fools Crossed and what doesn't. The Crossed are still different from individual to individual. What works with one plusface doesn't necessarily apply to the next, even if they can be somewhat predictable and stupid.

I love all u guys but seriously....a lot of u are going a little overboard with speculation. The man that wrote this comic has CONFIRMED trashbag mummy is crossed. And by the way I love how everybody calls him that since I made it up. It really makes me feel like a part of the whole WYWH experience. And I'm totally not harping on anybody but I'm really tired of reading about how some of u guys STILL don't believe trash bag is crossed. Go back and re read the comic and these forums. You'll see for yourself. I would think after this episode we could put that question to rest. Now as for my speculation. The nun said: All. All for shaky. I don't think she means she's doing this all for shaky. I think she's saying she wants all the cava residents in exchange for shaky to go free. The nun also said boats coming, time to go. It kinda seems like she wants shaky to set up a way for her and her minions to take the island if she let's him live. What's crazy is I could totally see him do it then try to take tabitha with and the nun only allows him to go. We know shaky is a sneaky cunt that could pull a thing like that off.

I think the only rule is stay well away from the Crossed or attracting their attention in any way, painted on plus face or not. I suspect such face painting wouldn't fool them close up, from a distance maybe as per Psychopath arc.

Also in the fatal Englishman arc the kids and preacher used red ink. In the quisling arc by Cristo Gage survivors used blood to make the cross and they also carried around body parts and they walked right past the crossed.

I'm also shocked that NONE of you have figured out that Clay Loan is a place in the Orkney islands.
