    So here we are again.

I'm sitting here at work in near the end of a double-shift, wondering if I'll get my next paycheck on time. People are all over the news and internet screaming to shut down the government with little care for the public servants who have to report to work tomorrow (and for the forseeable future) regardless of when we'll be paid next. I have co-workers on vacation across the country who are finding out that their time off will not be paid for.

    As the President said,
"Air traffic controllers, prison guards, those who are with border patrol, will remain on their posts, but their paychecks will be delayed until the government reopens... What, of course, will not be furloughed are the bills that they have to pay - their mortgages, their tuition payments, their car notes."

I at the very least am appreciative that the sacrifice of us "essential employees" is being recognized by the commander in chief, it's frustrating to notice that the oath I swore to uphold my office even if (or possibly specifically because of) the event of extreme emergency, and the documents I signed stating that I would consistently pay all just debts, the government in which I remain in service of does not feel that they must uphold their oaths or pay their debts.

Hearing that the other night, that Congress members were drunk while continuing to force this shut down just puts insult to injury.

    Anyone else following this crap?

    (I rant. I'm pissed. Again.)

I have to go in tomorrow shut down or not (Postal Employee) but no one has told me anything about anything. I think pay is good since we are self funded, but who knows. The place is fucked up no matter what the day so I doubt this will make much of a difference.

Hope everything gets sorted out soon for you and everyone else caught up in this bullshit hissy fit

If you guys aren't getting paid, neither should the twats who decided to shut down the government be paid. If they feel so strongly, they shouldn't mind.

USPS is getting paid, because they aren't paid by the Treasury (that's the way I've been led to understand it). I think I'm still fucked, though.

Apparently 1997 was sooooo good they decided to do it again

As a non US citizen, this whole situation and the motivations behind are things that, while I can comprehend, just completely boggle the mind. How does shit like this get so bad?

I really hope that it doesn't land all you peeps in the mire when it comes to your bills and living. I read that apparently members of congress are exempt from all of this, so they´ll be OK.

    That sucks!

And it looks like they don't give a shit either!

I don't mean to be insensitive, but, lol america lol

Mostly I'm interested to see if Canadian politicians and economists finally start begging each other to move away from dependence on the American market. We've been feeding off your bubble for too long, and just because we're independent enough to (mostly) avoid our own recession, it doesn't mean you guys tanking for a month isn't gonna drag us down with you.

It's a very alien situation to those of us in Europe, because our systems are basically set up to run themselves regardless of what the government of the day is doing. Budget in the UK is totally controlled by the currently sitting party, and while the opposition could vote against it they never do. With no vote on it taken in the second house, the US situation just can't happen here.

As a result, the European papers are mystified as to how the US lets itself get into these situations time and time again.

This would be funny if it weren't so fucking infuriating.

Also, DRAMATIC IRONY: today's Google Doodle celebrates Yosemite National Park. Guess what's closed because of the shutdown!

I'm sorry GovSpy... But hey the politicians that created this are "essential" so they'll get paid! Christ... maybe prison guards should just go home and leave behind maps to pols' houses.

Stupid people. fffftt... Services cut off, people don't get paid, and yet we still have pay taxes and government fees.

For those who need a passionate, angry denunciation of how the GOP's political fanaticism and stupidity brought the US to this state of affairs, Charles R. Pierce has you covered.

I just spent the entire day driving (far, far) away from Washington D.C. I just got to my motel, where a couple of truckers on a smoke break outside told me the news (I left the radio off for the drive).

"Hell, these cigarettes were all tax-free," the lead trucker says to me. "So it can't be all bad, right?"

    Sure, Cletus. Sure.

    God dammit.

So... do they just remove your sense of irony when you join the Republican party, is that how it works?

This from Rep. Jeff Duncan, (R) South Carolina: “I was elected in 2010. I feel Obamacare is shutting down America.”

The funny thing is, Obamacare isn't funded from the budget they're blocking. So it's gone into effect this week anyway.

Charles R. Pierce raises a disturbing question. What if the GOP lunatics want to keep the federal government shut down for the duration of Obama's second term?
