    I've not been to the cinema for a bit. The extended trailer of Gravity looks good - a bit of old-school science-fiction. Tempted to give it a go. I'll see what you people have to say first, though.

    Will I bother to see the new Thor flick? I've not even seen the first.

    Sigh. Late to the party, but went to see Elysium and... The first half: hey, this kind of rocks! The second half: halp running through a field of plot holes and camera is shaking so much can't see. The ending: if I thought I was running to this mount platitude and cliche, I wouldn't have bothered.

    Is it fucking possible to do a high budget scifi film where you are not saving the fucking Earth. Just for fucking once, let's try it, hmm?

    I could not agree more, Vorn. The beginning worked because Matt Damon was fighting for his survival. It mattered because it worked as a metaphor for extinction. You cared about him winning because it meant the human race was not doomed. You even forgave his stupid mistakes because it only made him more real.

    The middle... I remember how James Cameron said he reverse engineered the directing styles of Michael Bay and his imitators in order to understand it, duplicate it, and then throw it away. Neill succeeded in the first two steps. Really, he goes beyond Bay in many respects. Unfortunately, that includes the bad parts!

    The ending proves he didn't understand his own movie. And he cheated you out of the one thing we all wanted to see:

    ...the confrontation between Damon and Foster.

    I reckon I'll have to go and see Filth in a few days. It might be good for a laugh.

    Pity about Elysium. I've not seen it. My tolerance for most things high budget seems to have been depleted sometime ago. I miss sci-fi flicks like Dark Star. They don't make 'em like they used to, Guv!

    I saw "Gravity" today and liked it a lot. There is some serious nightmare fuel in this flick. Bullock was serviceable. Not great, but she didn't ruin the movie either. It's definitely a "director's movie" more than an actor driven one. I'd be shocked if it didn't win the best visual FX Oscar this year.

    Gravity was pretty good. Bullock was better than I thought she'd be. She's not a great actress, but I was never annoyed with her.

    Mostly because I was too busy trying to drink in all the detail in every shot.

    Saw Filth - if you want nightmare fuel, go see this. Some of it's brilliantly so. A massive performance from McAvoy and well worth the money.

    Also so Sunshine on Leith in a fit of Scottish films. Enjoyed it immensely - don't get me wrong, it's not the best film in the world but it knows its standing and runs with it - and I came out smiling.

    So, is Elysium worth a trip to the cinema for big screen or better to wait for smaller screen viewing, or should I not bother at all? Pity it''s getting such bad reviews, I was so hopeful!
    I'm planning on Gravity some time this week, which seems to warrant a cinema viewing.
    Filth doesn't get released here until the 21st of November, plus I live in a very small country town, so doubt the local cinema will be showing it. I'll be interested to see if and how the tapeworm is represented.

    I saw Blue Jasmine, Woody Allen's new film, on Saturday.

    Cate Blanchett plays a spoiled, impractical Manhattan socialite who has lost everything but a few suitcases of fancy clothing after her financier husband (played by Alec Baldwin in flashbacks) turns out to have been on the take for years. She shows up at the apartment of her working-class sister in San Francisco, looking for a place to crash while she regroups.

    It is . . . different. Unlike any other Woody Allen film I've seen. For one thing, while it is quite funny, it is also damn dark. How dark, you don't realize until the final scene. For another, it is (mostly) set in San Francisco, among (mostly) working class folks. There are flashbacks set in New York and the Hamptons (I'm guessing) which provide the backstory in increasingly dire detail.

    Good. Really good.

    Gravity, I'll see next weekend.

    I thought Elysium was OK. I dialed down my expectations and enjoyed it. You could wait for a cheap DVD rental.

    Don Jon was great. It was like a tenser, deeper Alfie (the Michael Caine version, of course), and it hit me where I live in a lot of ways that I didn't expect.

    It's not a perfect movie, and I'll elaborate on that right now:

    Julianne Moore's character is a Manic Pixie Dream Girl by any other name, albeit an incredibly well-acted one. I feel like Jon's boys either had too much screen time, or that their time could have been put to slightly better use. The strobe-cuts were a little hard on the eyes, and not, I think, strictly necessary.


    But overall, still a really good flick, especially considering this is Joseph Gordon-Levitt's freshman attempt. I'm curious to see what he's learned from Don Jon, and puts into his next project.

    Yesterday I saw a preview of footage from the upcoming documentary Spied Upon, about British undercover cops such as 'Mark Kennedy' having long-term sexual relationships (and even fathering children) with non-violent eco protesters whose groups they had infiltrated. This film has the potential to fully expose the details of the worst policing scandal in British history, but it's a long way from being finished... but if it is, it should be an important and horrifying piece of work.

    @StefanJ I liked Cate Blanchett's performance in Blue Jasmine too, but I felt the working class characters in the film didn't sound like anybody I'd seen in S.F.

    Opening this week in S.F. is Zero Charisma, a film which basically captures the more embarrassing aspects of nerd culture on the silver screen. Guys masturbating to images of comics women? Check. Aspiring creators ascribing their lack of success to companies refusing to validate their talent? Uh huh. Somebody who claims the story they submitted to a no-name writing contest was allegedly stolen to create "The Matrix?" Right here.     I'm bored and I want some discussion about NOAH.

    The entertainment media has the long knives out for Aronofsky's adaptation of the biblical story. Has anyone read the graphic novel it's based on? Has anyone read the script?

    Apparently three test screenings did not go well. The Jews and Christians didn't like it. Bad, but that shouldn't be a deal breaker. But the general audience test screening flopped too. That's horrific.

    Paramount WILL find a way to make their money back, even if it means pushing back the release and filming an entirely new movie, like they did with GIJOE: RETALIATION.

    Whether they do it with Aronofsky's final cut is the question.

    Hoping to catch AFTER TILLER, an acclaimed documentary portrait of the four remaining doctors in the US who still do third trimester abortions.

    Also, looking forward to LE JOLI MAI, a restored edition of a famed Chris Marker documentary about Parisian life in the year after the end of war in Algeria.

    ^^ agreed on The Fountain. Loved it. Always interested in what he's up to.

    Saw Captain Phillips this weekend and it's an interesting thing. It feels tense but I wouldn't say white-knuckle. It feels fair, studied, and balanced but not without emotion. It has some stunning acting but also, and only at points, pulls you out of the film to study the scenario a little more. Strangely I didn't engage with the characters as much as the title would lead you to believe but it is worth a watch - I think the title should be The Captain in honour of both the leads.

    Also saw Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 and it's so much fun. I'm pretty sure it rips on the cult of Steve Jobs while still being as weird and wonderful as the first film. Funtimes.

    Catch the Captain America trailer before they pull it down.

    Looks like a four-man Avengers team: Cap, Fury, Widow and Falcon. More workable size than the six-man superteam, I think. They're telegraphing the villain, of course, and, of course, there's another flying aircraft carrier.
