Remember: Not safe for work, not safe for minors, not safe for people of a nervous disposition, not safe for JohRic, not safe for ATOC adult, not safe for 83 Wardour Street.

Great issue. The ramping up of tension that has been occurring over the course of Vol 3 has been fantastic. I really dug the juxtaposing of the flashbacks in this. The hardening of Shaky towards Ashoke has been a long time coming. There have been bits in the flashbacks keeping it in mind, but then here we get several right in a row, showing how Shaky finally has had enough. Placing it alongside the little group heading out for their (loved Si's characterizing it) piracy / pillage expedition illustrated not only how a brutal decision can get reached and kind of builds its own momentum, but it also gives the current day events such a patina of doom. Since we know what Shaky's previous actions have led to (the corruption of Sister Teresa), it kind of makes one shudder to think what unintended consequences the raid will have. The other thing is, aren't they making an enemy of Jackson by doing this? Maybe they don't give a fuck about that any more than about the boat people, but it does seem like something to consider. Also, I think the debut of Crossed Gamekeeper is imminent.

The tone was great. The art was magnificent.

If there's no risk, why did he tell her to "stay behind him?" And not telling the others about the pregnancy because it would "confuse things?" No, it would actually clarify them. Oh, and the dwarf has a comeuppance in the near future for sure. Leading the expedition because he thinks it's "safe." This mission's going WRONG.

Countdown to Badbeast with a 1000-word post titled "Blue Balls Would Make Anyone Shoot A Cripple" in three... two...

yeah @longtimelurker I definitely feel you on that - Don is going to get his big-time.
Also does anyone else feel some foreshadowing when he mentions that only the elderly, the crippled and children are left to defend Cava? methinks that while they are off raiding the Americans, that they are going to get raided themselves and come back to a bunch of murdered friends... not a smoking crater though mind you, as the Crossed Sister just wants to fuck with Shaky.

it's crazy the change in Shaky... he used to defend Ashoke and now he's "taking him for a walk." it's been a long time coming though, and can you REALLY blame Shaky for it at the end of the day? in a situation like that, it's either him and the Sister or Ashoke. you can't take care of someone like that in "World 2.0". its why in the Garth Ennis original Crossed story, they murdered that enclave full of children.

Si - AWESOME first issue of the new Badlands arc, and the Crossed Special 2013 one-shot was dope as well. looking forward to meeting you at NYCC.

Could Shaky have orchestrated a subtle cross? Taking his unborn child and all the useful people off the island. The Americans raid it. Leaving the would be Cava raiders forced to join them in a fight with the crossed?

@Mcaldiero yeah, you might be on to something. Especially considering that note he passed to the captain at the end of the last episode.

Long time lurker, 1st time poster. Greetings.

    Couple of comments

@blighty I agree with the themes you noted and wonder if a parrallel is supposed to be drawn between Shaky's past situation w/Ashoke and now with the residents of Cava? girlfriend?

Also excellent point about Jackson. Not a good enemy to have. Although, Jackson and Shaky do seem to be on a collision course...

@Mcaldiero1 That sounds like a good possibility. Although I wonder what Shaky's endgame is then. Maybe he and the rest of the raiding party can take over the drift fleet rather than raid it. He would be throwing Rab and the weaker Cava residents to the wolves and would have to contend with the drift fleet attack party, that would include Jackson, when they return.

"Come for a little walk, Ash" . . . . Shaky won't shoot him, because that would queer his pitch with the Nun, but I bet he wouldn't baulk at shooting him full of Heroin.

"Tell me about the rabbits again, Shaky" *Shaky reaches into his tricky pocket, pulls out a nice big hit of gear, all made up and ready, in a five ml barrel*

"Soon Ash, very soon. But first, I've got a little present for you . . .do you remember this? *Holds out hit, Ash's eyes light up with half remembered comfort and feeling he was loved, all warm, and wrapped up safe from harm*

Ashoke may have forgotten that he should take off his pants before he has a shit, but you can bet your last 10 quid he can still raise a vein on a cold morning if there's a spanner full of brown held between his teeth, as he slaps the crook of his arm, fist clenched as hard as he can. Shaky stands behind him, hands on his shoulders as Ash gently pulls back the plunger, looking for that tiny rosebud of blood that says he's in.

First time! Yay, go Ash! "Ill tell you about the fucking rabbits, you mumbling potato brained spastic" thinks Shaky, as he rubs Ash's shoulders. But what he says is "Feel better now Ash?' All sleepy again are we? Well, have a little lie down Mate. I'll watch your back". Ash's head starts nodding downwards and as Shaky lets go of his now slumped shoulders, Ash gauches out, eyes rolled back . . . . ."Back of the net" thinks Shaky, as he slinks back to Theresa.

The scheming little cunt . . . . . "Stay behind me, it'll be fine" Shaky doesn't realise how right he is here. Everyone should stay behind Shaky. Because as sure as flies like dogshit, you wouldn't want that bastard behind you.

Shaky doesn't kill Ashoke because that would add up to three people that were killed outright by Shaky. When Shaky killed Jasper he said that Jasper was the second person he had killed, the first one being the Gamekeeper. Unless Shaky is lying to his diary again.

I'm not sure if it's ever been pointed out before or not, but is that a Crossed Jackson on the front page banner art?

Since Shaky said he only killed two people, perhaps he just took Ashoke out for the 'walk' and then somehow the Crossed just happened to find him? Ashoke taken care of without Shaky actually killing him personally.

@Hotdogger My current thinking is that Shaky takes Ashoke out to kill him, but they are attacked by the Crossed Gamekeeper. Then Shaky flees back, grabs the nun, and he gives her some lie about Ashoke dying. Then later they will encounter the GK again, now with Crossed Ashoke as well and Theresa realizes about Shaky's lie. Something along those lines. That would jive with Shaky talking about how many people he has killed.
