If you ever wondered "what's up with menstruation? Why do women get periods when other mammalian species don't?", here are all the answers you've been looking for :

How the woman got her period

Pregnancy is a war between the mother, the embryo and even the father.

In fact, it's sibling rivalry at its evolutionary best. You see, mother and fetus have quite distinct evolutionary interests. The mother 'wants' to dedicate approximately equal resources to all her surviving children, including possible future children, and none to those who will die. The fetus 'wants' to survive, and take as much as it can get.

There's also a third player here – the father, whose interests align still less with the mother's because her other offspring may not be his. Through a process called genomic imprinting, certain fetal genes inherited from the father can activate in the placenta. These genes ruthlessly promote the welfare of the offspring at the mother's expense.

Far from offering a nurturing embrace, the endometrium is a lethal testing-ground which only the toughest embryos survive. The longer the female can delay that placenta reaching her bloodstream, the longer she has to decide if she wants to dispose of this embryo without significant cost. The embryo, in contrast, wants to implant its placenta as quickly as possible, both to obtain access to its mother's rich blood, and to increase her stake in its survival. For this reason, the endometrium got thicker and tougher – and the fetal placenta got correspondingly more aggressive.

We really are a fucked up species.

San Diego is burning (again). Saw plumes of smoke from my work. Luckily I'm not anywhere near the evacuation zones but pretty much all of north county is in hellflames.

    Here's a vid

    'Biggest dinosaur ever' discovered
Based on its huge thigh bones, it was 40m (130ft) long and 20m (65ft) tall.

Weighing in at 77 tonnes, it was as heavy as 14 African elephants, and seven tonnes heavier than the previous record holder, Argentinosaurus.

I'm glad that jackass left an explicit paper trail. There will be not second guessing of the nature of the agrieved nutshittery was responsible.

    (I have to ask . . . what is MRA? Mens' Right's something-or-other?)

I'd advise against reading the YouTube comments on his video manifesto (summing YouTube haven't binned it by now) if you want to retain any sense of faith in humanity. It seems the MRA lot have already claimed him as a 'martyr to the cause' etc...

Really? I'd assume A Voice For Men is fairly mainstream (though too radical for my tastes), and they say: "The level of doublethink here is high; much of the MHRM is skeptical and critical of the PUA community, and most of the PUA community is anti-MHRM. But still, while simultaneously conflating “PUA” with “MRA” (which is is already an apples-and-oranges comparison), the irony is that this murdering scumbag was an Ex-PUA, and a member of an Ex-PUA community that ejected him for his psychotic violent ramblings, as reported by Forbes."
(ETA: I'm not endorsing the site or the article, I'm just disagreeing with the idea they've flocked to Rodger with open arms)

Well European politics is drifting to the right somewhat this week. The far right have dominated the EU election in France, and many other right parties have had strong gains. (and also far left parties in some countries).

It seems if the people get what they 'want' then the EU as an institution probably doesn't have long left to live.

The next few years will be an utter clusterfuck that'll make what's going on in the US seem pretty tame...

I'm thinking about something that happened in the theater yesterday.

One of the trailers run before Godzilla was "22 Jump Street." It includes a shot of Jonah Hill's character punching a woman in the face.

A meathead in the row ahead of me laughed uproariously at that.

He and his friend showed up in the restroom afterwards, when I was draining the lizard. "That wasn't very good," he told his friend, "but I really want to see 22 Jump Street!"

Someone on Twitter suggested that that trailer was like a Vought-Kompff test for misogynist bros.

Oh, and because they can, Fox News is saying he did it because he was secretly gay.

The only positive about this is that it's showing just how fucking stupid other people's narratives and arguments are.

You know who I feel really terrible for, other than the victims (and their friends and families of course)? This guy's family. They tried everything they could. He was seeing a counselor, they tried to warn the police, they were even supposedly on their way to try and stop him after he sent his fucking manifesto to them and they couldn't get to him in time because they lived too far away. They tried and tried and still had to watch their kid go off and sow this suffering. I can't imagine what that has to be like for them.
