Colorado offered free birth control — and teen births fell by 40 percent

But I guess other states won't follow the example because contracetption is agains God or because helping poor people is contrary to the principle of free market economy or something ?

Well, Wood, how else do you think they'll fill the for-profit prisons? And who would work the burger fryer at McBurgerBullshit?

In ‘sexting’ case Manassas City police want to photograph teen in sexually explicit manner, lawyers say

A Manassas City teenager accused of “sexting” a video to his girlfriend is now facing a search warrant in which Manassas City police and Prince William County prosecutors want to take a photo of his erect penis, possibly forcing the teen to become erect by taking him to a hospital and giving him an injection, the teen’s lawyers said. A Prince William County judge allowed the 17-year-old to leave the area without the warrant being served or the pictures being taken — yet.

Foster said the case began when the teen’s 15-year-old girlfriend sent photos of herself to the 17-year-old, who in turn sent her the video in question. The girl has not been charged, and her mother filed a complaint about the boy’s video, Foster said. The male teen was served with petitions from juvenile court in early February, and not arrested, but when the case went to trial in juvenile court in June, Foster said prosecutors forgot to certify that the teen was a juvenile. The case was dismissed, but police immediately obtained new charges and also a search warrant for his home. Police also arrested the teen and took him to juvenile jail, where Foster said they took photos of the teen’s genitals against his will.

The case was set for trial on July 1, where Foster said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Claiborne Richardson told her that her client must either plead guilty or police would obtain another search warrant “for pictures of his erect penis,” for comparison to the evidence from the teen’s cell phone. Foster asked how that would be accomplished and was told that “we just take him down to the hospital, give him a shot and then take the pictures that we need.”

    What. The. Actual. Fuck.

    @vorn, her comment:

“It’s shocking for me that people would compare someone who is standing in front of our flag that represents our freedom on Independence Day. I’m holding my First and Second Amendment rights in my hand and it all represents freedom, and they want to compare me to a woman who is quite the opposite. She despises everything about this country and hates this country and would kill all of us if given an opportunity. I don’t understand where the logic comes from.”

The bad science / outright scam that's Valkee ear lights is crashing and burning. I've read their papers and followed their case, and there's absolutely nothing that doesn't make this sound like utter bullshit.

Valkee’s sales crash, loss explodes, tax funding stops: The results

I did have a door open to the possibility that this was a case of someone having a scientific idea (although an idea that doesn't work) being overtaken by a Proactive Startup Guy who understood fuck all about scientific progress, but judging their new "revolutionary health product", I'm not so sure anymore...

EDIT: Wrote my piece about the whole Valkee thing: Valkee Earlights – When Aggressive Marketing and Start-Up Mentality Overrode Science

Mysterious new crater appears in Siberia :

The area of Russia is said to be called, ominously enough, the end of the world. And that's where researchers are headed this week, to investigate a large crater whose appearance reportedly caught scientists by surprise. The crater is estimated at 262 feet wide and is in the northern Siberian area of Yamal.

The crater has been a magnet for attention and speculation since aerial footage of it was posted online last week, showing a gaping hole and what looks to be rocks and earth that exploded from within it.

The list of possible natural explanations for the giant hole includes a meteorite strike and a gas explosion, or possibly an eruption of underground ice.

This is bad but it could well get worse. McCain made some pretty interesting remarks. Sanctions, weapons, even troops. "Hell to pay". If Obama gets it into his head to go in there, I'm dead certain our lot will go along with. 27 Australians on the plane and a right-wing PM whose popularity has collapsed? Nothing more useful to him right now than a good war, and he's got a readymade excuse right there.

[edited to correct number of Australian dead]

@curb - that's an interesting one. I have to say, if the NYPD says something isn't art, it probably is. The flags being bleached-out stars-and-stripeses is a nice touch.

Also, "Authorities [...] are now searching social media for clues." - we really are living in the worst possible cyberpunk future, aren't we?

@curb & @256: Oh, that's definitely art with a huge side of political statement, and they don't like that one bit.
