Well… somehow, through a combination of blind luck and bone stubbornness, I've managed to survive a full half century on this spinning mudball.

Been a lot of change in the last decade especially for me:for example, a couple of weeks after turning 40, I found out I'm diabetic (through a vicious case of gangrene in the foot, which left some nasty memories and a rather cunty scar). There have been other two especially big changes along that ten year span:

The first was going from being in a polyamorous triad with two women to being monogamous with only one of them. (Yeah - woe is me, etc. Trust me, the reality was considerably less pleasant, what with the collapse of the relationship being basically due to one of us decideing to join a drug cult.) The upshot of that was a forced relocation from Bristol, my home of 15 years, to Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire - and, to be honest, I don't see myself leaving now we're here.

Sometimes, the worst things happen for the best.

And Whitechapel was a place where I could rely on good conversation with smart, passionate folk about damn near everything and the barest minimum of dickishness along the way. there were times that was so important for me...

The other big change was going from someone with few job prospects to a regularly-paid professional writer. And, credit where it's due… this place and you guys have played a huge role in that. Without the example and support of so many talented, kick-ass people here, I wouldn't have had the guts to even try a career in writing, let alone be tenacious enough to actually get there.

So, cheers guys. Especial thanks go to:
-Warren and Ariana and all those who got this place running at the start.
-Si and Oldhat and everyone behind the scenes these days, for keeping the flame burning.
-Texture for commissioning my earliest longform pieces - cheers, Bram! Owe you a few bevvies!
-The likes of Iceland Bob, Mikey, Wolven, Moon and Serpent, Spiraltwist, David Forbes & the rest of the Grinders, for support, kinship and stirling examples of getting shit done.
-All of you, for good times, smart talks and remarkably few anally-inquisitive life forms. Love you fuckers. (Not the eels.)

Now I'm off to drink good whisky, eat tasty things and generally debauch.

Sometimes, the best things happen for the best.

Make sure to go through all the "rites of passage" that I've gone through in the past month: prostrate exam, colonoscopy. Basically, turning 50 means showing your ass to a wide variety of medical professionals and getting a thumbs up. Literally. : )

    Thanks, you guys!

Was a pretty great day: key components were a Imelda May gig the night before (she wrote Our Song, a piece about being in love when poor called The Kentish Town Waltz - which she played & Darling Wife & I snuggled weepily), and on the day there was prezzies (main one is a Pebble smartwatch I treated myself to), Thai food, very posh cheesecake a ritual watching of Groundhog Day and Doktor Whisky made a house call in the form of Ardbeg Uigeadail (cask strength, smoky richness with a hint of salty leather, tastes like you'd imagine The Diogenes Club smells).

Today, it's back to normal, which means working on my next Darklore article (on hyper-real religion) and a T'ai Ch'i Chuan class (including hand-to-hand applications and sword forms) with a mild hangover. Result!
