We get our look at the first cross in today's issue. and excellent crossed annual from SI, Id say not a bad way to end my last day of finals! For everyone speculating on their being a chance for humanity to survive a C world. look no further than the tag line. "there is no hope."

AS a side note is anyone reading "UBER" if your not reading "uber" you are missing out. issue 11 came out today and I have to say I have never been so blown away by a comic book, between crossed and uber Avatar press is seriously pushing how comic books are telling their stories. Please go pick up uber, you really wont regret it, its so good.

My friend and I discussed things we want to see in future arcs, among the hits: The origin of horse cock, how did his original Cday go? The return of family Pratt/harold lorre.

he has an incredible idea from a therapists point of view, from the Presidents point of view, and astronauts up in space.

But above all we agreed the biggest thing we want to see from the future of crossed: A live action webseries. We would even throw in on a kick starter for it. Hey Avatar We want to see this!!!

Presently, all original Crossed miniseries characters are off limits unless Garth Ennis says otherwise. So no Mr H.C. at present.

Closest thing to a therapist so far was that Oliver guy, right? (Anthropologist) Or maybe that author, he was studying human nature at least ... well sort of.

Air Force One - apparently did not end well.

Space, depends on whether or not the covers counted I guess. I thought a story incorporating what those showed and a point of view from the ISS would be interesting.

Live action series, they're already doing it. Something called Crossed: Dead or Alive I believe. Live action and a webcomic.

Looking at the tagline "no hope", I can see most of the people in the urbanised modern world possibly being wiped out and humanity being pushed to the margins but there's been people living independently in the harshest and remotest parts of the world and they'd continue to do so even after C-Day. We tend to forget not everyone's in our circumstances and there's some people who would be much better adapted and located to avoid a crisis like this.

Some might fall to bad luck and others to super Crossed actively coming after them but others would make it and even wipe out attackers due to their home ground advantage and a lifetime of experience with their environment. Some people live so remotely and self sufficiently that they'd never be found (we're still finding undiscovered tribes).

So even if the world's population got dropped to the millions (or even less), I believe a few will make it no matter what. If the human race can make it through the Toba Supervolcano, they can make it through this.

Oh yeah Shan I know it's ends badly for air force 1 but his idea circled the idea of the chain of command. You know how if the president dies the vice takes over then the speaker of the house and so fourth? I think a story would be really funny and interesting as we watched the chain of command go. As one by one until it got down to the 50 th in line or something.

Have you ever seen battle star Galactica? Something like the first episode of that would be awesome. Basically the presidency goes to like the 30 th in line in that.

Dead or alive was announced so long ago I assumed the project had been dropped. Oh well here's hoping.

I've never heard of toba volcano I'll read about that!

    Battlestar Galactica ... argh!

Still haven't gotten over that. Stopped watching TV for many years after that show.

On the chain of command, Stephen King's The Stand after the superflu had been raging for some time said it best. "... the chain of command had a lot more holes than it did links ..."

Goodness, I reread issue #52 three times, and each read just increases my fascination with Patient Zero. The biggest thing that I can't figure out with him is that he talks about sensing that Harry has killed before, which is something that Harry confirms to be true. But is Patient Zero just a crazy infectee making educated guesses, or do you guys think there's something else going on with this chap? Also, do you think the end of this story arc will give us a definitive answer on the origin of the Crossed, or do you think it's going to be kept vague?

    Mysteries, mysteries, mysteries...

"Thin Red Line" has been really good. @Dannykat I feel like patient zero would fall into the "something else going on" category. Ennis is using him as a furthering device for the statement he wants to make with Crossed. Something about how the origin of the infection is the collective evil of mankind. It is implied that he is in the grip of this "collective evil" or whatever, and it made him see visions of genocide when looking at pictures of his family. And that he murdered them while in the grip of these visions. Yeah, #52 confirmed the existence of a virus of some kind, but I don't think Ennis will get too specific(and he shouldn't. it is way more powerful to keep it mysterious).

I just read Si's new Crossed Annual and loved it. I like the little bits of experimentation that he brings to the comic form in his Badlands and one-shots (he has addressed this himself a few times, I believe, but I don't have the links handy). This one had the full-page prose interjections, and there were the "gutter captions" in his "The Beatnik and the Biker" arc, the reality show style "confessions" and use of symbols to differentiate POV in the previous annual(the one set in the Outback), and even the Sin City-esque use of blocks of text in blacked out panels in WYWH. And, of course, this particular story was insane and hilarious. Being alongside the fat kid, trying to suss out what the crazy old Crossed lady wanted, was very entertaining and the climactic reveal was spot on. So fucking funny.

Oh yeah, the newest WYWH here is just up and another great episode. Now we know why Theresa was at least partially naked when infected lol. And the shunning of Shaky was so harsh but completely understandable. They other islanders are not evil or anything, they don't want to kill him outright. But they don't trust him because of his weird ties to the enemy, and how bad shit seems to, quite non-metaphorically, follow him around.

@SlickNick Good shout out on "Uber" as well. I have been reading it since issue 0 and it is spectacular. I think I read in an interview with Kieron Gillan where he said that it is a "work for hire" gig, similar to Spielberg and Raiders of the Lost Ark, where he was brought in to write this thing, which was not something that he had necessarily been ruminating on prior. Which makes how good it is even more impressive in my eyes. And, of course, Canaan White has been hitting it out of the park on the visual art side. He is great at differentiating the characters and handling facial expressions, but can still drop the hammer with MASSIVE action scenes that are well choreographed, highly detailed, and easy to follow.

Maybe the virus is just not liking people the more it meets?

Well, if you want to treat the virus like an individual, it probably hates us already but it's just trying to find the best way to kill us. After all, Patient Zero described it as a laughing voice.

The proto crossed virus mutations seem to be influenced by the personality of the infected, some it just kills, some it sends into a coma, others it makes suicidal and finally in violent people it manifests as rage/lust. Of the 4 strains only the final rage/lust variant is viable as none of the others propagate the virus so those strains die out leaving us with only the Crossed rage/lust version which is incredibly infectious, though less so than the proto-crossed virus as it requires body fluids for transmission not just touch. I would say the most realistic scenario for its sudden outbreaks the length and breadth of nations would be infected defecating and urinating into water reservoirs and that infected water making its way into the main drinking water, suddenly within hours of consumption infection would seem to spring up everywhere virtually simultaneously.

While the pissing in reservoirs idea makes sense, it would definitely require a lot of thought and patience that would test even an Alpha-Crossed.

Okay, so let's talk about the farmer's wife from the second annual. Specifically, why did she place Isaac's inhaler near the entrance to the tower? It's as if she was upholding some sort of unspoken bargain with him to defeat her tormentors. Unless my old eyes deceived me, that's Aoileann level smart right there.

of course humans will outlast the crossed, but not not your retarded groups we see in the crossed universe. and if the crossed are like normal ppl not super humans like the crossed are portrait in the comics.
    by superhuman i mean:
apparently feed on air and rocks
    they don't get infected
seems like open wounds don't get maggots or bleed to death
can live naked in freezing temperatures
apparently takes a couple of weeks for naked crossed to freeze to death not 1-2 cold winter nights that kill homeless ppl every year
    they don't get disses
they can cauterize cuts and missing limbs
can start ship engines - which is a very meticulous process not just press start button. takes trained ppl to start a ship engine.
can use maps and compass to navigate to islands
don;t get lost in the desert or woods or swamps
survive in the said desert and woods eating and drinking some magic pills that keeps them athletic fit
can track ppl down for months no mater how much distance you put between
have 6th 7th and 8th sense on finding ppl in remote hideouts

i understand that creating rape zombies wouldn't be so special but it seems to me the crosses are more and more evolved something like in the last resident evil movie where we have zombies that shoot guns and drive vehicles. wtf?
ok having a very organized NORMAL group of ppl would be boring coz prob they will counter or run from crossed attacks. of course we need some retards that never learn or take the apocalypse as a joke.

if the crossed apocalypse would actually take pale with rage/rape humans vs normal humans the normal ppl will survive coz we use our brains for hunting, growing plants, hide, make traps, navigate, catch fish, build some shelters, dress, etc.

that is how humans evolved in the first place when they left the warm climate areas and moved north. they needed clothes to keep warm, needed tactics to hunt coz fruits would grow only a couple of month a year and so on.

@Dannykat I think you are somewhat correct. She grabbed the inhaler and set it by the door to get him to come out. Not a "bargain" as such, but she just needed to get up to the top and snag the keys. I think the punchline to the whole thing, after all of Isaac's story attempts, was that she was just a crazy old lady, who wanted more than anything to combine those kids (there is that line from Isaac where he says something like, "You probably hated them even more than me" or something like that which ended up being the truth). It wasn't so much that she was "smart" it was more of a total fixation, similar to Matthias from the "Conquers All" Badlands arc.

Obviously reservoirs could become corrupted just by dead crossed ending up in them also. yes unfortunately the crossed are very comic book in their ability to survive devastating wounds and inhospitable conditions, its for this reason I prefer the stories set in the initial outbreak as in reality the first winter would virtually remove the crossed as a threat in the northern hemisphere. Even in the largely temperate UK wind chill, rain and nakedness lead to a very short life expectancy. The stats quoted in "Fatal Englishman" of 950,000 surviving crossed 5 years after C day are in reality nonsensical, however saying this never let facts get in the way of a good story. ;)

I believe it's been said in a few interviews (including Garth Ennis) that they're never going to tell us the original cause about the epidemic, seeing what those of you who've read Badlands 52 have said, I take it to mean that they're never going to tell us exactly how or why Patient Zero became Patient Zero now that a definite virus has been found.

It looks like my speculation from earlier was in the right ballpark, that there was a form that was before the final form that immediately (or at least very quickly) infects now.

Here's a question based on what I've been able to piece together from what I've seen.

The first issue of this present arc shows Patient Zero running before he gets buzzed by a military aircraft.

The preview of number 52 showed an airbase having a jet crashing into the airbase. Were the pilots infected? Could it have been the same plane.

Is it possible that Patient Zero unlike the others has some means to set off the infection just by proximity? Given the complete lack of control Crossed often have after initial infection, for planes to have Crossed pilots seems to terrifyingly imply that the people went up normal and changed while in midair.

The mention of a virus that is in the process of changing form could mean that there was a latent form spreading for who knows how long and leaving people acting normal until C-Day when it suddenly went off.

As for Patient Zero's role in this, I have a theory that will probably never be proved one way or the other because I suspect they're going to keep it suitably vague and ambiguous.

OK, nowadays Crossed infections seem to happen if you get hit anywhere by any amount of Crossed infected bodily fluids. Like in that preview I posted a while back from #18, if it is a virus, it's certainly not like anything ever seen before as Nathan said (skin is actually a very good barrier for infection, the Crossed virus goes through it like it's not there).

Seemingly straightforward enough now, don't get hit and stay human, get hit in your body anywhere and you're doomed within minutes at most and seconds at least.

In the beginning though, it was weird. Sudden mass spontaneous eruptions in the middle of previously doing normal things like driving cars and buses and flying planes. Shaky's first encounter was someone seemingly having normally just walked though a door and bending over to pick up a dropped piece of cutlery before suddenly flipping, as did a lot of other people nearby and outside who had also been going around their day the moment before.

So, I guess that could suggest latent infection that up to that point had been spreading silently for goodness knows how long before the trigger event. Then you'd have to guess that the latent form all mutated into the active form otherwise you'd still be seeing people with no visible signs or history of touching contaminated material suddenly and spontaneously becoming Crossed.

The aircraft that buzzes patient zero could not be the same aircraft that shoots down the evac chopper or crashes into the airbase as typhoons simply do not have the endurance to fly for that period of time.
