Fair enough, I didn't know the time frame as I don't own any copies of any Badland comics.

I do wonder how pilots in general got infected in the beginning though.

I think it's pretty clear, from reading #50, that it was Tom and Jackie (the RAF navigator and pilot pair who are the other main protagonists in the arc besides Harry and his team) who buzzed Patient Zero with their plane. Tom says "Wingco's compliments: That's one godalmighty bollocking for last night's shenanigans. I bet you left half the paintwork on the roof of that barn."

And about the pilots getting infected, I think that in itself is a terrifying indication as to how widespread the contagion had got in the UK (and worldwide) by the time they had Patient Zero in custody.

Anyway, in the next issue of Thin Red Line we may very well see more members of Brown's cabinet, as it seems they were making preparations to get them into the bunker. "Young Miliband" (presumably Ed) has already been mentioned so we might see him. Here is a list of Brown's cabinet after the first reshuffle in 2008, which would have still been in place at the time of the story:

Prime Minister The Rt Hon Gordon Brown MP

Chancellor of the Exchequer The Rt Hon Alistair Darling MP

Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs The Rt Hon David Miliband MP

Secretary of State for Justice The Rt Hon Jack Straw MP

Secretary of State for the Home Department The Rt Hon Jacqui Smith MP

Secretary of State for Defence The Rt Hon Des Browne MP
    Secretary of State for Scotland

Secretary of State for Health The Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP

Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs The Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP

Secretary of State for International Development The Rt Hon Douglas Alexander MP

Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform The Rt Hon John Hutton MP

Leader of the House of Commons The Rt Hon Harriet Harman QC MP

Secretary of State for Work and Pensions The Rt Hon James Purnell MP

Secretary of State for Transport The Rt Hon Ruth Kelly MP

Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government The Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP

Chief Whip in the House of Commons The Rt Hon Geoff Hoon MP

Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families The Rt Hon Ed Balls MP

Minister for the Cabinet Office The Rt Hon Ed Miliband MP
Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport The Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland The Rt Hon Shaun Woodward MP

Secretary of State for Wales The Rt Hon Paul Murphy MP

Leader of the House of Lords The Rt Hon The Baroness Ashton of Upholland PC

Chief Secretary to the Treasury The Rt Hon Yvette Cooper MP

Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills The Rt Hon John Denham MP

Yes I took it as the aircraft that buzzed patient zero was the 2 aircrews also. you are right of course that even though Brown seems stuttering and impotent really it is to late to check the virus by the time it comes to light. Small point though, the latest canon from Garth Ennis makes it clear the Govt were aware of the biohazard yet in the first volume of WYWH we see troops respond with no chemical protection employed even though it is freely available to them.

    @AlexGB

Without trying to second-guess Garth Ennis, I can see a way to reconcile this seeming paradox. We already saw that just one infected Tornado was enough to cause massive destruction in the RAF base and essentially cut it off from the world. As things rapidly go FUBAR, I could well imagine the government giving the order for all military personnel to be equipped with NBC suits, only for that order to get lost in all the mounting chaos - possibly even intercepted by a Crossed military officer in a key command position and hence withholding it from everyone else. And from Lance's backstory we know that that particular Tornado will be far from being the only RAF plane to be flown by infected pilots.

Though it does make me think that Shaky and everyone else at that cafe were a little too preoccupied with their own things to watch what was going on Sky News that day, heh...

In volume 1 chapter 9 it states they (the Army) knew they were dealing with pacifying diseased civilians. Standard operating procedure in such an event would dictate the use of NBC gear, nevermind the deployment of anti tank weaponry to a civil disturbance (just no) or tanks even, tanks that somehow become controlled by infected despite being NBC sealed and locked. I do love WYWH and anything crossed related but you have to all to often swallow a huge pinch of salt.

Also regarding the NBC its not like it has to be issued it is an integral part of your kit that you have access to at all times whilst on duty.

Hmmm, actually something like this would certainly look cool in a Crossed story:

    NBC equipped soldiers shooting

It's from the "Gyo" manga/anime and the plot is... well, you'd have to see it in order to believe it. It's totally fucked up, and I say this as a Crossed fan!

I don't think Patient Zero can infect people by just being near them. If that was the case, Gordon Brown would have become infected when Patient Zero escaped.

I don't think so either. I just found it weird that there's no obvious chain of infection to the pilots. Mind you in the beginning, weird things and spontaneous mass eruptions of people turning in large groups from one moment from normal and doing their jobs to the next moment going all homicidal and crazy just makes me wonder.

Now that I think about it, the Crossed lady at the cafe during the beginning of the London outbreak meshes incredibly well with Garth Ennis's introduction of early stages of the virus. I wonder if Garth has been keeping tabs on old Shaky...

We don't know for certain, but the head scientist theorized that these particular chaps became highly aggressive because that was their predominate nature before infection; the infection then latched onto that negativity and made it worse. But, again, that was just a guess.

The Crossed version of the virus is the final most viable mutation of an earlier virus. The earlier virus could be communicated by fluids and also direct physical contact, this earlier virus manifested in various ways, coma, suicidal tendencies, rage/lust and even death. As you can imagine only one of this manifestations is viable as a disease vector as 3 of them are transmission dead ends.

Theories and observations, observations and theories. Theories and observations, observe. Theorize. I got one. How about the last chapter of the very first arc from Garth. "There was no great secret to the crossed". "Where did they come from? Us." Nuff said. I truly love the thin red line, as Harry, Jock, Taff and paddy are some of my fav characters. But I for one hope they do not explain fully how and where this "infection" started. That's what makes crossed as cool as it is, the unexplained. Answers are highly overrated. Mysteries, mysteries, mysteries. Ignore, ignore, ignore.

patient 0 contacts the virus through magic - it;s not important how or from where - he has just some bursts of crossed behavior =>he infects patient 1. patient 1 has no cross, takes some time to act crossed, takes longer time to get the cross on his face=>infects patient 2 who turns faster etc maybe cross on face or not =>.. patient xx who turns crossed almost instant

that would be the logic coz the virus or whatever mutates and can bypass the immune system faster.

now my question is how the ppl that turned crossed in a millisecond out of thin air got the virus? coz they turn full crazy mode and cross on face. with no big delay. if they wore let's say patient 1 or 2 where the virus was not in control 100% don't you think some of them would go rape/suicide/dead mode? and that would get somebodies attention. but in wywh that was absolutely a normal day. coz if x% of the population would go nuts or dead there would be a word on the streets about it. there was a small town missing, that could be easily covered by the government but if 1 mil ppl go missing in london wouldn't that attract some attention and be harder to cover up?

Umm, no offense, but I'm not actually sure what you're asking. Are you asking how the virus is transferred? Are you asking why the guards went crazy while the others didn't? Or are you asking why the infected in London are acting differently than the first people that were infected? I'm not trying to sound mean, but it'd be best if you could be clearer about what you're trying to ask here.

sry for not making my self clear.
"Or are you asking why the infected in London are acting differently than the first people that were infected" <-this
infected ppl that showed no cross were not acting normal. some died, some go rape/kill mode, some went suicidal, patient 0 has burst of crossed behavior but they didn't past unnoticed.
even in the first crossed issue. there is a patient 0 that comes to the coffee shop whit a spine and he has no cross on face, but after he bites the coffee shop cook the cook gets the cross on his face really quick. also after they get outside you can see a lot of crossed doing their nasty things.

lets suppose that patient 0 gets into a subway and is really crowded and all of the ppl in the subway get infected without turning crossed right away. they have time to get home or to work or whatever. and then they start going nuts. wouldn't that get some attention in the big cities? how did the plague spread from patient 0 to the big cities without getting ppls attention?
as far as wee know only that small town from patient zero arc wen;t missing and turned out on the edge of a cliff jumping. if 100 ppl went and jumped from big ben or the ferries wheel in london that wold be some shit that would hit the media.

coming back to my idea. why the infected ppl from other cities that didn't display the cross in the beginning did;t act crossed until they got the cross on the face
