Only just come across this: far better quality than I'd expected for a webcomic!

Beautifully stylised and I love the logo - a more complicated tatoo then Snow Town but I can see this being used.

The writing is everything that I love about Mr. Ellis's stuff - hints enough to draw you in to somewhere unexpected and unknown but lots is clearly still with the monsters under the bed. The "born at the same time" idea hints back at some of the Wildstorm characters (Jenny Sparks, Elijah Snow); I wonder if this is just a cherished idea or whether some significance will come out of it...

I'll enjoy finding out!

And I agree with xutraa about KK. "No, of course I didn't, I threw FULL one." I'll be smirking about that line all day, and people will be mystified by my smile.

I also thought it was a neat touch to have Alices' eyes go the same color as Connors' as he was using his "powers" on her, in addition to the back ground changing to the purple tint also. It's a nice subtle way to show the use of it without getting ridiculus. Besides a healing ability and some kind of telepathy, I'm curious to see what else they can do.

Kudos to both Mr. Ellis and Mr. Duffield. The weeks can't go by fast enough for me.

Ooh wow, yet again amazed by the quality of this webcomic - a free webcomic, and I can't wait for the next already, it's like reading an actual full in-depth comic with the quality only they keep you eager for more with this bit by bit reveal and explanation. Substance in every small package.

I absolutely love the imagery used to represent the telepathic process, I've never actually seen it used like that, a melding of how it is for him with how it physically looks to see both at once on the same panel! Glimpses of her past and who she is, the telepath simply ruffling through her memories as they drift like scattered leaves on the wind for him, like it barely takes any effort for him and she's laid bare before his eyes.

Hehehe - another giant kudos to the: "Did you distract her with your manliness?" XD

That aside, I'm digging the story. I really loved the panel where he was reading Alice's mind and all the little drawings and photos that make up her memory are swirling around. Cool stuff that.

It's free, so at the very least I'm not disappointed in paying for this. The art is once again the strongest element in Freakangels. I thought this story sounded unique, and it is. I thought the characters sounded unique, and in a way they are. But they speak in the same way as every other character Ellis writes for. I feel like I could switch the names from KK and Conner to the two characters from 'Crooked Little Vein' and it'd be just right. The only differences are that the freakangels have abilities and are living in a different setting. At the core, they read like the same damn people.... so far.

It's just the same one-liner style.

That's the one bad opinion I have about it. Don't worry, I'm not completely knocking on Freakangels or Warren.
There are some really cool concepts and ideas drifting through the Freakangels plot. Nice little touches to take notice to, such as the eyes changing during the telepathy process. The conflict in the story seems interesting enough. Not everything is simply laid out for the reader. And as I said before, the story itself sounds unique. But in the end I'll leave the 'brilliant' slinging to the very typical super-fans.

Usually when I hear about a webcomic, it's usually an uninteresting comic by some unknowns. But this is definitely not that. I really hope this format catches on, especially when the writing and art are so damn good. I feel almost guilty reading this for free. Wow. It wouldn't be overstating it to say that Mr. Duffield is currently one of my favorite artists. It's kind of rare (for me at least) to just want to sit and look at a comic. Sure, there are great comics artists out there, but few seem to be able to so effortlessly make each panel look like an individual, stand alone, work of art.

As for the words, they all play into many of my great loves. Instantly hooked.

I didn't think it was new - my reference was to it being used before in Wildstorm comics, so I was curious as to whether it would be relevant narratively, or, just as you suggest, a way to nicely underline and enhance the "magic" (and perhaps something that Mr. Ellis just "likes" as an idea). haha at witch hunter robin, I didn't realise he looked so similar. Might have been deliberate, except that I really disliked the series and forgot what the characters looked like after I gave up on it.
Connor's a product of Warren's description, my style, and my own predilection for men of that type.

Nicely done second act, introducing more snippets to taunt us. The art really is beautiful - nice work Mr. Duffield. I can see the Lobster Random comparison, but this is much freer in line style and the colours are much more subtle.

As for the use of English accented characters - get over it. Most comics are produced with American accents in mind so I like Warren redressing the balance. I've been using fook for years...

It is not an issue of English accents. It is an issue of stereotyping Mancunians as if they all say 'fook'; (the other option is to give them dark Gallagher-esque eyebrows! Thats all. Its an easy way of regionally identifying a character - too easy to be blunt; I had come to expect more of Mr Ellis.
Still, its a minor point and as I've said, both the art and story are excellent.

Hate to be a nitpicker, but if you have a regional accent and come from manchester, you're bloody likely to say 'fook'. A cliche or archetype is only weak if it's being used without knowledge or purpose, and it's not inherantly bad writing to employ frequently used techniques like written accents (no matter what 'the paper' says about avoiding them). Especially if they amuse me.

The whole "fookin" thing makes me wonder on where we are here: is the language aspect a problem? I would suggest two reason why not:

1. It's set in the (a) future so things may have changed!

2. The comic is in the WorldSpaceThing and, please, who gives a toss whether the accent is bang on other than "the locals". At least it's an accent! [note: I'm from the north east of England and any diss on this sense would probably make me feel angry due to local patriotism, if I'm honest; we are who we are!)

I'm enjoying it so far, you can't really fault free, beautiful, webcomics. Add retro flying machines, psychic powers and an eerily flooded London and I'm sold. Nice to get a webcomic that isn't built on the one page (or even three panel) pay-off too.

As for Fook, as a Mancunian in exile that reads more Yorkshire to me but I understand the shorthand and couldn't really give a fuck. I was more offended by the Man utd shirt (but that's a tribal thing).

Just to be clear, you are asking me in the context of one writer sounding like himself, rather than one writer sounding like others, right? Because that's how I'm viewing it.

There are many millions of writers who have come to pass through generations and generations, I'd dare to say: Yes. :) That is a common attribute to a writer, though, for their writing to read in similar ways and have an overall flow that in some way could seem familiar. And even so, it can be a good thing for the 'recognition', if that is indeed the aim in frequenting such a style.
It can be, but is not entirely, a question of accepting a style. At least not in this case. You see, I was trying to make a point more specific than writing styles. And that point is in the dialogue. When I say that two characters in one book could be two entirely different characters from another book and still read as if they were the same people (*read*, as in 'speak'), I'm not generalizing the writing to style alone, but the speech.

It seems--forgive me--amateurish. I'm not trying to start an argument by saying that, it's just an observation. I'm only clarifying what was my point to begin with.

I think from a writer's point of view, finding a unique voice for each and every character is one of the hardest things to do (although I'm no proffessional writer, it's what I find hardest, I'd be curious to know what Warren has to say). Many famous or celebrated writers could be accused of the same thing (I'm thinking of Herman Hesse particularly, whose characters evidently include vast amounts of self-insertion, often read similarly and he's by no means the only example I can come up with), so I wouldn't describe it as amateurish, it just means the emphasis is elsewhere.
For comics with a separate artist and writer though, dialogue is an especially tricky thing imo, since half of language is a visual thing (their expression, their posture, their attitude). So even if in your opinion a character *reads* similarly to another Ellis character, you don't just read a comic... visuals and language need to be taken in respect to each other in order to really "hear" a character speak. And if you still find the individuality weak, then at least it's free! XD

sometimes the reason that the characters might sound the same is that they might come from similar backgrounds -- it happens with people so why not with characters? from character to character there is difference within what we have seen already -- KK and Connor have distinct personalities and they stand out differently from Alice. i understand that's what's being said is that they bear resemblance to characters from other stories but perhaps that is because they have things in common -- simple as that.

You know, there's only been so much dialogue anyhow. It may sound like a pre-mature comment, but it's obviously based on first impression. I don't intend to discontinue reading it, and I'd probably buy it if it were on the shelf solely because of it's unique setting and artwork (a great combination). Just saying, in case I'm coming off as being offensive.
Anyway, when I say 'amateurish', I'm not saying Ellis is an amature at all! It only seemed like something of an amature's problem, having characters blend together and seem to be recycled, in a way. The self-insertion method scrambled across the vast works of a writer like Ellis--who I heard has more comics in print than anyone else in the business--is bound to have some charcters that are seemingly the same. Furthermore, I'm sure you could come up with quite a list of author's who are 'accused of doing the same thing'. But that can't be a goal for a writer, celebrated or not, can it: to have their characters sound the same? I just can't imagine that.

That's all I have to say, really. Minor things that need much less attention than I give them. :)

"Fook" did come across us a tad immature at first. Immature in that it seemed to avoid using "fuck", which of course it wasn't, but it did make me question its usage and therefore detract from the story, which I'm sure wasn't intended.
[An aside: My wife works in a junior school (not as a teacher). A phonetics specialist was in her classroom yesterday. One of the first things she asked the kids was, could they come up with a word that ended in "uck"!]
I think it is inevitable that an author's characters are going to appear similar, particularly if the author is very prolific. If an author is successful then it's probably because their readers like their characters, as much as the stories being told.

Don't know if this has been suggested, but have you guys thought about having a cover page in the begining of the chapters? This would keep people who are coming in a few issues behind or just starting to read from inadvertantly catching little pieces of plot that are on the first page as they enter the site.

Really I just want to see some more of that fantastic art every week because i'm selfish...

I love the depiction of Alice - without the accent I would still have figured her as a Manc from the trainers-sans-socks, urban camo, smack-addict eyes, and that jaw... and, of course, the United shirt... it's a brilliant caricature of the (usually) affectionate prejudice we have between cities, and between districts too (I'm with KK on the Lambeth thing!). Wonder what'll get dropped on people from Highbury?
