    Half of America's oil is spent on food production, not transportation. Oil for cars is a small portion of oil usage.

    So, no, this isn't the beginning of the end.

    When peak oil happens, then the time of oil barons is at an end...

    Miles Electric an established manufacturer of low speed neighborhood cars also say they'll have low cost highway-ready model out shortly.

    The Tata Nano, which was unveiled recently and is the world's cheapest production car (something like USD$4-5,000) does around 50 MPG. Supposedly Tata plans to follow up with hybrid and battery versions.

    At that sort of price (and remembering the Nano hasn't passed safety tests for use in the US yet) many US households could cut their fuel usage dramatically by buying a Nano as a second or third car for short commutes and leaving the SUV in the garage except on the week-ends.

    A few months ago, my uncle pointed out a reclusive startup company (EEStor) about 20 miles away from me that has quietly been researching supercapacitors and a cheap, scalable way of manufacturing them.

    That sounds more like the future of cars. Electric motors like in our hybrids or in the Tesla, and a $3,000 supercapacitor that can "take a small car 300 miles on one charge." Supercapacitors also live a lot longer than chemical batteries.

    Another day another bunch of electric car stories.

    It's really starting to look like Electric Car time.

    I won't be posting every story lik this that comes along I just want to illustrate the variety of companies and projects involved.

    Nissan (in partnership with Renault) will be building electric cars in Japan.

    Tesla looks like having competition in the high performance end of the market from Lightning.

    Think says their next model will be larger and made in partnership with a major car maker.
    (That article mentions in passing that Tesla is planning a third model to follow its sports car and sedan version - a compact sports car with a likely price of around $35,000).

    My buddy's dad bought a Tesla a couple months ago. He asked our other friend if he should by a Prius, and half-joking he said "No, you should totally buy a Tesla Roadster."

    Then he did.

    The Loremo looks like it would suck to get in or out of during a rain/snow storm, the way the front/top opens up. The inside would get totally drenched.
