    If we can have a thread on Lost, I figure we should be free to dissect Torchwood as well.

    The last three eps have been a vast improvement on the show; it's finally starting to hit it's stride IMO.

    The season opener was killer and we've gotten past the obligatory Toshiko ep, so it's looking cake for me.

    especially now that they've leveled-up Owen. he's gonna make a great counter-point to Jack.. which the show's really been needing

    I have some small hopes for the Owen 'Zombie Jesus thing'. The Doctor's 'Jesus thing' was just TOO lame.
    Not that I'm looking for Jesus in Torchwood, they just seem to keep being in there.

    Never too sure what to make of Torchwood. It's been improving, but it always seems to be trying a little hard to be gritty and adult, and I can't help but think the money would have been better spent on Who's production budget. I think it's pretty cool to have an openly bisexual lead, even if he does come dangerously close to being a stereotype. However, one question for the more knowledgable fans - is it some kind of running joke that Tosh gets shit rained on her every episode? The last three episodes I've seen have all involved her finding love, only to have it swiftly and brutally taken away.

    It's pretty much the same tale of terrifying incompetence and sexual harassment at the workplace... but the main reason it's improved to the point of not making me want to shove rusty nails in my eyes is twofold;
    1. Jack Harkness is the great big tart he was in Who again, instead of being the broody sub-Angel ass he was in season 1, and
    2. They're not taking themselves anywhere near as seriously.

    And killing off Owen Daterape-Boy helped.

    it's kinda weird, I think Rusty is trying to explore his atheism on TV. that is the second time he's written into the show that there's no god/heaven after this. Kinda funny, last show he made - check out The Second Coming starring Chris Eccleson. It's an interesting take on the Second Coming.

    I think it's interesting - I remember JMS, another Atheist in sci-fi, he took the completely opposite direction with Babylon 5... gave the show a much more spirutal feel...

    I finally stopped watching 2 or 3 eps in this season. It's not improving fast enough, is too melodramatic, and can't figure out what it is or wants to be. I simply don't care about anyone in it and can't respond to any of the characters.

    I had the same thought, but Davies Atheism is more akin to a sullen 13 year old than something simply post-religious. For people who talk about the wonders of the universe and the Torchwood wanks spend most of their time whining and making boring bawdy jokes. The episode last season where Jack cuddles a timelost guy and talks about "it's all just blackness" sounded like something you'd hear outside a Hot Topic.

    I watched the season opener and would rather have had James Marsters kill the whole damn team and start over with just him and Jack, fucking and saving the world.

    Behind on eps over here in the US, but so far it's been uneven. Not that I'm going to stop watching it. Just file it under "pretty but dumb".

    yeah, isn't it great to have the old Capt Jack back. now that's he found "his Doctor" again, got some answers and chosen to come back to Torchwood, he's lost the angst and is so much fun again. and yet they still give him those Angel'esque moments on the rooftop.. sigh

    you call Owen date-rape boy, but i think you're missing the larger theme they were exploring. season1 seemed to me to be largely about how a bunch of humans would be corrupted by having access all that alien-tech. each one of them abused it, just in different ways. but yeah, Owens' was the worst for sure.

    In my opinion the second season of Torchwood improved a lot on the 5th and 6th episode ("Adam" and "Reset"), so I'd recommend those. Though having just seen the seventh, I'm concerned it might go right back downhill from there.

    Jack kissed Ianto on the head right before Ianto took the amnesia pill
    made me cry. I had to pause the episode because it was just so... sweet. And so unlike Jack from last season. Also, they're so cute together.

    I agree that this season is better than last year. It seems a lot more solid, and yes, less angsty. I'm really enjoying the theme of "and this is why Jack does THIS!" or "and that's why Jack says THAT!". It's interesting to see his character develop. Last season it was mostly "I am Captain Jack Harkness. I'm hot and I will screw anything that moves and I'm mysterious! Did I mention I'm hot?". This season, it's more like "I am Captain Jack Harkness and I'm not entirely sure who I am anymore." I'm really looking forward to next Wednesday!

    Not missing it at all - just ignoring it! He annoyed me generally.

    I got the exact opposite feel last season - or rather, it was said sometimes, but the flirt-with-anything version of Jack from Who seemed to vanish, to be replaced with angsty-Captain-Scarlet.

    yeah, still watching. Some better episodes have been emerging I reckon, though I still get plenty of laughs per episode, so that's ok :D

    Accidentally caught the Torchwood: Declassified this week, with the travlling circus people. That made me laugh even more. Mainly the bits where they were going on about how they had managed to make a very small space in the woods look really big and impressive, but it totally looked Actual Size to me...

    Adrift was... Brutal. 20 Hour scream? Bloody hell.

    But yes, this has taken a massive bump in quality recently. Looking forward to Fragments next week. I want to see how Jack became a member of Torchwood! I couldn't care about anyone else, but I am so into the mystery he keeps building around himself.

    It's always fun when he reveals he's intrinsically tied into something deep and conspiracy like. Or, y'know, that he was happier once. With the photos. You know what I'm talking about...

    And Ianto/Jack in Adrift? Anyone? Anyone? THANK YOU CHIBNALL!

    Brutal was a good ep. The 20 hour scream was disturbing, but I couldn't help wonder how he could even talk afterward.
    I didn't want to laugh at the boyband joke, but I couldn't help myself...

    I enjoy Torchwood a lot but file it under 'guilty pleasure'.

    I can't help but see it as the slash fiction version of the regular Who-universe. Aliens conquering the universe via the medium of 'fuck', and so on.

    When it acknowledges this, it can be a lot of fun (e.g. the season opener: 'Angel on poppers' I think it was called)

    Haven't watched Adrift yet. I found From Out of the Rain to be quite disappointing in an otherwise really solid (and vastly preferable to series 1) series 2, so I'm hopeful to see people talking up Adrift here.

    ADRIFT - I see Chibnall has fallen back to the "Gwen is a cow-eyed eediot and people cry" default mode of the show.

    I was almost afraid he might write a good script. I needn't have worried.
