All I have read is Junky, going to tackle Naked Lunch soon. Wondering what else of his I should read? Any good bio's of the guy? Just fishing.
I like the ideas and methods and such. I dunno this is late and I ramble... more tommorow -
i just read 'yage letters redux' and 'the cat inside'. i have some of the rarer books. i really enjoy his writing and his ideas and some of his recordings are amazing. 'yage letters redux' is essential reading -- partly for seeing the interplay between WSB and Allen Ginsberg and seeing how the different viewpoints colour an experience. 'the cat inside' is a slight work, an inessential meandering series of thoughts on cats. it is very readable -- short and easy to plough through.
my favourite books are junky and queer -- though nova express and the ticket that exploded are really fucking great. -
the best bio is 'el hombre invisible'. i can't remember for the moment whether that is the one by barry gifford -- i don't think so but maybe.

Naked Lunch has to be read to be believed, real important 20th century landmark that book.
Also recommend Word Virus which mixes biography with lesser known work and short fiction. -

Naked Lunch is one of the few books that both opened my eyes and then made them vomit blood. In case you were wondering: Thats a GOOD thing. The Dr Benway chapter is brilliantly funny and utterly chaotic by the end - one of my favourite literary moments.
Actually... my eyes vomiting blood is not a good thing. I need a doctor - stat... -

anyone ever read the dual interview Burroughs and Bacon gave in Tangers?
One of the most brilliantly amazing things I've ever come across.
It's reprinted in it's entirety in Danial Farson's "The Gilded Gutter Life of Francis Bacon"
but I'm sure you could find it online somewhere.
And Vale has a cool Burroughs-book right now. -

I love Burroughs' work, it's inspired my own on the same level that Lovecraft has. Check out some of his spoken-word stuff, it's excellent. -

Theres a documentary about Burroughs that was frigging great. It had parts of what must have been an aborted Naked Lunch film with William himself playing Benway. It showed him performing surgery with a toilet plunger. Fun fun fun. When I read Naked Lunch back in high school it really loosened me up and taught me to have fun with being a writer and that realism was pretty boring. Anyone in love with Cronenberg's take on Naked Lunch? Man, I need to get the Criterion addition...

There's a version of Naked Lunch that has his report on different cures for drug addicts. I forget what it was called, but, man, it was an interesting read. Now I have to grab that next time I'm in LA again...

Yeah, the version of the book you're talking about is Naked Lunch (Harper Perennial Modern Classics), which is the one I got at Christmas time. I can't remember the name of the essay either and don't have the book with me at the moment.
I've started on The Soft Machine, but about 60 pages in, it hasn't grabbed me with it's genius the same way that Naked Lunch did... -

the bio 'el hombre invisible' was actually written by barry miles -- barry gifford wrote the sailor stories.
i still think junky and queer represent some of the best straight up writing that burroughs did. -

I read Naked Lunch and really liked it. I thought the movie was pretty good, but more because I'm a Cronenberg fanboy then anything else.
Junky was good as well, but I haven't read anything else he did. -

I'm a huge Burroughs fan but I'd have to say that the only things he wrote that I'd actually consider required reading are The Naked Lunch and Junky. There's some fantastic stuff elsewhere but those are the only ones that really matter. -

Do you mean the "Letter from a Master Addict to Dangerous Drugs?" It's in the Grove paperback edition of Naked Lunch, and I also found it here. -

Nobody's mentioned Brion Gysin, The Third Mind, or Exterminator! yet...highly recommended for those interested in the practice of Do Easy and the cut-up method.
