What's everyone listening to this week?

Well, at least the new releases are already up at http://www.piccadillyrecords.com ( pick the genre off the left and click "magic mix"), which is one of Warren's favorites, but I've been meaning to ask: have you found other good places to get a good listen to the week's new releases?

 J. G. Thirwell, "Ectopia"
Inspired to purchase after listening to the great soundtrack work he does for "The Venture Brothers", although everyone's too polite to call him "Mr. Foetus". Yes, it does sound like Johnny Quest music on acid; that's the whole point.

Aril Brikha: "Ex Machina"
Impulse buy from a link of a link of a link on i-Tunes. Good old fashioned melodic techno album. Enough beat to keep things moving, enough songwriting to keep things interesting. Reminds me a lot of Carl Craig's "Landcruising" LP; sounds like a album of instrumental music that someone thought through rather than just a collection mash of intended singles.

Their particular brand of electronica, what they call 'Monumental Dance', is especially awesome and I'm sad no-one else has tried to do something in the same vein.

and Gamma Ray's first album (I dunno how this happens), Heading for Tomorrow.

And.... The Fricara Pacchu CD arrived today (thank you Warren, Whitechapel Radio and the Finnish Lal Lal Lal label) and my 3 yr old son Sol and I listened to it while we showered. He decided that it was too scary, so we took it off. I've been pretty sick, so I haven't listened to much this week, so this is more of an intention-to-listen post. Very scary psych. Still waiting for my Fonal order to come.

I did get a CD by Keak da Sneak and I'm kind of converted to this hyphy Bay Area thug sound. For pointers in the right direction on this sound, check The Nation of Thizzlam. I heard "That Go" on a skate video on You Tube and that hooked me.

I'm all over the map. Picked up the Cranes' Wings of Joy again for "Tomorrow's Tears."

The new Big Sleep album on Frenchkiss arrived today too, but again, I haven't listened to it yet. I loved the last one. Artful, loud and pretty all at the same time (and not in a metal opera sort of way, much more raw).

I got a tracklisting up for that mix I posted a week or two back. Check it here. I'll likely post it over on the SXSW thread too. I hope nobody minds.

I'm listening to the late Drew Hayes (of Poison Elves fame) band the Misfortunes, Sirius released it finally after many years of claiming it would come out any time now. It's rockabilly and quite fun.

Also listening to a local band the 75s, I go to school with the lead singer and just got a copy of their cd quite good in a whole poppy punk thing. They claim to be like the Ramones but female, I really think more along the lines of the Buzzcocks. Check out their myspace for a listen www.myspace.com/the75s

Been listening to the Vampire Weekend album, not sure if I like it or not.
It's certainly fun, but although they've obviously tried using interesting instrumentation, they haven't used it in a particularly interesting way, and the tracks just sound a bit like early Strokes.

I'll have to give it a few more spins.

Nick Cave & Gutter Twins out tomorrow though, especially looking forward to the latter.

Also bought a ticket for Public Enemy in May. They're touring It Takes A Nation of Millions for the 20th anniversary, performing the whole thing start to finish, which should be pretty awesome. It's still one of the finest Hip Hop albums ever released.
