    I'm rather annoyed, so I figured I'd share this with you.

    My old 82 Toyota recently failed it's smog inspection, which was expected and quite welcome. This means that the California government will give me $1000 for it. Considering I paid $400 for it, that's a pretty good deal. Anyway, I've got all my paperwork done, and all I have to do now is take it to the DMV to finalize the paperwork, then take it to a junkyard. Before I can do that, I need to find a new car. So, after a few rather annoying weeks, I find a 94 Ford Escort with only about 46k miles on it.

    In California, the seller is supposed to smog the car before selling it. I've turned down two or three sellers recently because they wouldn't smog the car they were selling. However, I was sick of looking, so I just took this one, assuming it would pass smog without any problems. It didn't. Now, I'm fucked. I'm going to have to pay at least $390, but probably more like $700, to fix it, depending on if the catalytic converter turns out to be bad as well.

    Moral of this story, don't be a fucking idiot. Make sure the seller smogs the car.

    It's a thin moral and completely lost on anyone who doesn't live in California.

    Which hopefully I will soon be one, because I too, hate cars. Give me a good subway any day.

    California gives you money if your car fails an inspection?
    Colorado doesn't have a smog test, though we do have an emissions test. No idea if those are the same thing, but I am pretty sure if you fail emissions you don't get any money for it.

    Yeah, smog and emissions tests are the same thing. In Maine, you only need an emissions test in one county.

    Nevada does it as well. A concern for older vehicles to be sure.

    You can only get the money if you fail a biannual inspection, though. They will also help you fix the car if it fails said biannual. It's a pretty nice program, in my opinion.

    we don't have any such laws in Ky...which is quite evident in the coal and farm trucks that belch their smokey black way up and down the interstates...
