Every Monday, the fine indie music purveyors Piccadilly Records in Manchester list the new releases they've received, and include mp3 samples of most of them. For some years, my Monday ritual has been to load the new Piccadilly playlists into WinAmp and listen to what's new.

Anything you like the sound of, this week?

(They do have an EXCELLENT mail order service, but I banned myself from buying CDs during 2007, and instead buy my music through Emusic, Bleep, Tunetribe, Beatport, or, if all else fails, fucking shiTunes.)

That New York Noise compilation looks a bit tasty.

Generally speaking though, December is a fucking awful time for new releases. It's all nasty Christmas comps and 'Best Ofs.'

I used to work at Tower Records in Piccadilly Circus and Camden Town. Just thinking of the Christmas period back then is enough to bring me out in hives.

I dig Boris, saw them live a few years ago with Sunn O))) and it was certainly one of the more unique shows I've been to, along with one of the loudest.

That Japancakes cover of LOVELESS is fucking insane.

I should check that out, Loveless is amazing and to think of it without distortion sounds blasphemous and awesome at the same time.

I still quite enjoy that string tribute to Tool, when I bought it years ago I figured it would be a novelty at best but that turned out not to be the case.

XLR8R's weekly podcast of new music fills much the same function, but focussing on electronic/hip hop/jazz/odd indie music. i need to resubscribe to the magazine again. you get a quality sampler cd with each issue. listen to the weekly mix, then go to xlr8r and snipe out the best individual tracks. then buy the rest of the album from emusic or bleep.

    not shilling, promise.

    Interesting, I didn't know that...

Boris and merzbow... again. Thats, what, the third or fourth album? Nietoperz is right: that new york noise sounds inviting. Branca or Chatham?

When you say loveless you mean the whole album?

Just got the Birchville Cat Motel - Seventh Ruined Hex, and its fantastic black hole brain quake

anything with Campbell Kneale and Matthew Bower on the same record is a MUST buy!

I'll most definitely grab that Amon Tobin remix EP. The Japancakes looks interesting as long as it doesn't come off as a self-aware/campy joke or something. Guess I'll have to give it a listen to see.

Yeah, it's the whole of Loveless.

I'll have to give it a go, but loveless is a bit of sacred cow for me. suppose it needs slaughtering...

I picked up a couple of music DVDs with Queen: Live Montreal and Live Aid and Sigur Ros : Heima
Only CD I got was Daft Punk Alive 2007, which while good, does not compare to their show at Red Rocks this summer, where I swear they dosed the beer.

Wow. I have no idea who any of you people are talking about.

    I need a hip(ness) replacement.

Not that this is directly related to the conversation above, but I've been listening to the new Teenage Bottlerocket album "They Came From The Shadows" and it's pretty kickass. Also the Copyrights' "Learn The Hard Way" is awesome too. There's new Sacramento bands G. Green and also The Ganglians that I've been seeing & enjoying but don't have any of their records yet. Other than that I've been enjoying the Whitechapel Radio stuff, it's new and different and I like it.
