I'm kind of guilty of this. I make a lot of fliers for the comic book shop I work at, and I use AnimeAce for most of it. I think it looks a little nicer then comic sans but still has the same comic book style to it. I wouldn't use it in most other projects but it seems right for a comic book store flyer. But yes, I do think Comic Sans is an ugly font.

According to this article by Vincent Connare himself, the font was never intended for wide-spread use, it was originally for a comic book style program and the inspiration was Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.

I had to revamp some packaging for a job and worked overtime (unpaid) just so I could get rid of the Comic Sans splatted all over the designs.
It was hard because the Photoshop images were flattened before I got them and somebody had lost the layer files.
But the font had to die. Pixel by pixel.

It's not that comic sans is ugly or just designed with as little intelligence as possible, it's the anti- helvetica effect. The more someone uses it, anywhere anytime in some part of the world, the typeface gets uglier, our appreciaton of it sinks even deeper if that is even possible as it is already in a damp, dark and cold cold place. It is so ugly it nibbles at humanity's overall sense of self worth and beauty each time someone conjures the executive frontal part of his brains and selects it, anytime, anywhere. The sad thing is you know I'm not exaggerating.

I remember an article in France where they explained comic sans was the exclusive font used for our extreme right group's newsletter. I had quite an enjoyable time picturing in my head a skinhead in front of msWord finally finding comic sans "that's it. this typeface embodies perfectly what we are about. it will be the perfume of our newsletter." Most probably he told himself "fuck it, that will do" but that's slightly less enjoyable.

On xp, if you don't want to think about type, go Verdana for text, and (I will get shot for this) Arial bold works fine for precomps and presentations.

As a sidenote on vista they really pushed great designers for their new fonts. I can think of calibri, cambria and candara on the top of my head, and that's without leaving the C's.

It's not comic typefaces, but would like to share two that just popped out recently. One is nice with an interesting edge, the last one is just beautiful.

That was a nice surprise in the android sdk (after admittedly an underwhelming announcement.) it will be the typeset for the android platform.

As for the beautiful one it is still being developped.

Nicole Dotin has just completed the first stage of her typeface Elena. The font fulfills a portion of her post-graduate degree at the University Of Reading and we expect a release date of late '08.'

Man, I think I'm in love. I used to be a big geek for Times New Roman (increase the leading and watch it turn into one of the most elegant title fonts ever), but I think this might top it.

There's a comic book font I quite like called I hate comic sans that I used for my first ever comic! Beyond being a hilarious name, it's a lovely font in upper case (lower case isn't so pretty, and the font as a whole needs a bit of polishing).

Comic sans is evil and it must die. Working for an insurer, it never fails to amaze me how a financial adviser will write a serious, important email and then use comic sans as the font. Because an overused, comicy font is obviously the best way to show how professional you are, isn't it?

I've always been an Arial man, but I'm liking Elena. Lovely little font.

My design work is typically for the same company so I go in phases with my fonts. I started (and occasionally flash back to) Tanek.

Then I switched to TW Century and now I'm fixated on the Futuras. I really like sans-serif fonts for my design work (though I do like that Elena up top).

* The various free font sites have an okay variety of comic fonts. Nothing that's going to drive Richard Starkings out of business any time soon, but okay stuff probably more suitable for design work.

The worst thing about Comic Sans (and this goes for all typefaces) is that in so many cases it is misused.
What hyim said is a funny example, but also if you look at - lets say - toy shops and the like, they use comic sans because its "fun and quirky!"

And of course, everyone with a PC with Word thinks they can design...

haw. every time i saw the comic scans thread i thought of this font.

but since we're on the subject, it's been the main font on Boondocks since forever, and it's always made me have to keep the vomit at bay in the back of my throat. i don't understand people using it. Why would anybody do such a thing?

Comic Sans still isn't THEE most overused-but-shouldn't-be font out there. It's U G L Y, no it don't got no alibi, it's UGLAY, sure, but still. You forget.

There's still Serpentine Medium out there. I used to love the look of it back when B5 was first on the air. Now seeing it makes me puke.
