Based on somebody mentioning it a few weeks back, I went out and downloaded a few songs and remixes from Apoptygma Berzerk. I had only heard him via him doing a song called "Unicorn" with Claudia Brucken on backing vocals (catchy song), so I had a chance now to hear more of what he does. It was...interesting.

Interesting in that every note he plays and every vocal he spits out reminds me of another song. I could not hear his stuff without thinking "Hey, it's Front Line Assembly, no wait, it's Nitzer Ebb...wait, wait, Front 242!" Which posed a weird point for me (other than the fact that it points me out as an semi-old bastard): has "industrial" music really not evolved that much from 1995?

I know that it's questionable whether this particular artist fits that genre, but when I was poking around other similar artists on iTunes, same record labels (Metropolis Records, etc.), it all had a really similar, stuck in early 90's sound. Which I guess isn't all that different from saying Counting Crows still sounds like that did for the 35 seconds they were popular. I just find it interesting that a genre like this would just dig it's heals in so grudgingly to stay the same.

I listened to this in the same car ride that I had a chance to finally really digest NIN's "Ghosts" songs, which I would say is what "industrial" was bound to mature into (or beyond). Of course Apoptygma Berzerk has his eyes squarely set on selling records to people who dig THAT sound, but it was an interesting juxtaposition.

Nothing wrong with that, but it's just interesting to see industrial spun that way.

Of course, Nitzer Ebb was never shy about admitting that their whole "I'm sweaty and beating on metal" image was absolutely geared towards making boys dance. I just spent a week in Sherwood Forest holdiaying with my wife and daughter and on the seccnd day there found out my nan died, so i spent the week cycling around Centre Parc on my own listening to the following:

dust. - Monainanexqusitewallflower (from a Warren myspace recommendation, which at an hour and a bit in length, became my most listened to song last year...)
the Akira, 2001 A Space Oddesy (spelling?) and Sunshine soundtracks
Portishead - Portishead
A selection of Dropkick Murphy's
The Vampire Weekend album (which title escapes me)

And Crazy by Patsy Cline, which i found out was one of my nan's all time favourites. It made me laugh and cry because my dad demanded me and three of my friends sing this at karaoke for him on his birthday three years ago...

@Tacopunch, thats track is really really reall fucking awesome, is it downloadable?????

Turns out my nan was 'Jitterbug' Queen of Gillingham, sometime in the 50's, which was a weird thing to learn

 Midweeker:
"Industrial" was always more inclusive than most people gave it credit for; I had a huge love affair with all the Nettwerk bands of that time (Moev, Skinny Puppy, Severed Heads, Manufacture) and as a label, Nettwerk was amazingly diverse. Hell, even Sarah McLachlan did her first album there ("Touch"), with a decidedly industrial flavor to it. They had bands like Consolidated (white industrial socially conscious rap), Bel Canto (Cocteau Twins with a stronger drum machine) and Skinny Puppy before they fell into the pit of same sounding albums. Chicago's Wax Trax label was pretty inclusive also, until all the bigger acts got signed away, leaving it a clearing house for all of Al Jourgenson's side projects and any fart he put on vinyl. For me, industrial was my "heavy metal phase", but with enough drum machines to keep things moving.

And on that note, I got an alert last week that Al did the official theme song for his favorite hockey team, The Chicago Blackhawks. Dig it up on iTunes, even the 30 second sample they provide is worth it for a laugh. Not Ministry's finest moment, but fair play for supporting the home team with a tune.

Also all their songs start the same way.

Also NIN Ghost I-IV and Sikth's 'The Trees are Dead and Dried Out...'.
