    So what are you listening to right now?

    New week's releases are up at http://www.piccadillyrecords.com at some point today, if they're not already - just choose a genre from left and click "magic mix" to stream excerpts from the new releases.

    Right now, I have some recent-ish stuff on the CD changer -- Octopus Project, Arcade Fire, Battles, Wolf Parade -- and am just loading the mp3 player up with the new Black Francis (which I've already played once, and it veers between good mid-period Pixies and Daniel Johnston trapped next to a crap jukebox without his medication), the new Billy Bragg (couldn't help myself -- I will regret this) and the single by hyped new singer Lykke Li, "Little Bit." Which is shit. But the b-side, "Dance Dance Dance," is actually very good.

    Currently listening to The Sandinista Project (a song-by-song tribute to the original Sandinista!), which isn't working for me; Elvis Costello: The singles v. III (bunch of great EC, and about 5 million versions of "Everyday I Write the Book"); and some Pogues, in preparation for St. Pat's.

    Right now, I've got a mix of Finnish, Japanese, German and American metal playing in my WinAmp. Some Apocalyptica, some Rammstein, a whole lot of Dir en grey and an unhealthy mix of nu metal (my not-so-secret shame).

    My inner J-Rock fan is very happy about having seen Dir en grey live last summer. Unfortunately, though, I had to watch the whole gig from back because the lolita-type fangirls scare the bejeezus out of me.

    HIM - Many In High Places Are Not Well
    A friend lent me this. I'm trying to listen to it inbetween co-workers moaning one thing or another about how inept they are... or is it me moaning?... HIM is keeping me grounded for now. Great production on an otherwise jam-based jazz record. Some sounds come out of nowhere sometimes; other times they come out of exactly where you thought they were.

    Next on playlist, definitely not WIlco. did anyone see them on SNL? whoa. hello Joe Cocker.

    I have been listening to Curtis Eller and the Two Gallants.

    The South By Southwest festival is currently ongoing, I envy anyone who is able to attend, but I would advise anyone to take a look at the attendees.

    They have a player where you can listen and search the bands.

    SXSW is the reason why i get to see four great bands tonight, i wish i could go with my friends, but i just dont have the time or money. but i will repeat it here: listen to SEX/VID! IRON LUNG! HATRED SURGE! FUCKED UP! they are all playing, just none of the "official" SXSW shows.

    it's all ipod, which means lots and lots of elvis costello.
    makes me kinda wish he wasn't so damn prolific.

    did rediscover passengers -"original soundtracks 1", though.

    i used to love u2, until they decided trying new things wasn't going to work out for them. their last two albums make me sick, but i maintain that they did some fairly cool stuff in the 90's. like working with brian eno and putting out an album of (mostly) mellow electronic music, then releasing it without the whole "omg u2 iz tha biggest band in the world" shit.

    Based on somebody mentioning it a few weeks back, I went out and downloaded a few songs and remixes from Apoptygma Berzerk. I had only heard him via him doing a song called "Unicorn" with Claudia Brucken on backing vocals (catchy song), so I had a chance now to hear more of what he does. It was...interesting.

    Interesting in that every note he plays and every vocal he spits out reminds me of another song. I could not hear his stuff without thinking "Hey, it's Front Line Assembly, no wait, it's Nitzer Ebb...wait, wait, Front 242!" Which posed a weird point for me (other than the fact that it points me out as an semi-old bastard): has "industrial" music really not evolved that much from 1995?

    I know that it's questionable whether this particular artist fits that genre, but when I was poking around other similar artists on iTunes, same record labels (Metropolis Records, etc.), it all had a really similar, stuck in early 90's sound. Which I guess isn't all that different from saying Counting Crows still sounds like that did for the 35 seconds they were popular. I just find it interesting that a genre like this would just dig it's heals in so grudgingly to stay the same.

    I listened to this in the same car ride that I had a chance to finally really digest NIN's "Ghosts" songs, which I would say is what "industrial" was bound to mature into (or beyond). Of course Apoptygma Berzerk has his eyes squarely set on selling records to people who dig THAT sound, but it was an interesting juxtaposition.

    Currently playing -a+M which was (somewhat appologetically) described to me as 'math folk'. So yeah, math rock type riffs on accoustic guitars.

    Going to run out and get the Silver Mt Zion album at lunch, curious to see how they've polished it for release since most of their tracks have live recordings freely downloadable, and it's a live album right?
