So: if you bought new comics this week, here's your discussion thread for them.

Rules: I'm not interested in shopping lists. I want to know what you thought about what you bought, and so do the people reading. If you've got a spoiler element to discuss, use the "hide" button in the reply menubar.

Why does this appear on a Thursday? The world outside North America doesn't get their books until Thursday. And a lot of people don't go shopping until the weekend -- consider yourself as providing guidance for the Saturday shoppers.

Off you go, then.

out of everything i bought yesterday, the only thing that truly stands out is AVENGERS: INITIATIVE #10. im not too keen on marvel superhero stuff, but i have been picking this up since it started on one of those internal deals with myself ("if it is not good, i will stop buying it...sounds fair.") that usually goes wrong. somehow i love this book. it features everything i SHOULDN'T like (launched from a crappy "mega event", avengers family tree, super marvel continuity intwined, blah, blah, blah), but works great. Slott and Gage are weaving fun stories with enough intrigue to make it stand apart-waaay apart. and i have taken quite a shine to caselli's art since the book started too. this issue in specific is the 3rd chapter of a story i didnt expect, with great characterization throughout and a crucial ending that leaves you wanting the end of the story NOW. good job guys! plus: the taskmaster. thats all i need to say, that guy is an amazing jerk.

 Fantasic Four #555: Millar and Hitch...on time...brain...exploding...........
Okay, so the issue itself was really good. It retains the grandiose blockbuster-type storytelling that made Ultimates great, but with the family dynamic that has always made FF interesting (not good, interesting). So far, Millar hasn't reverted into 'Ultimate' mode, and most of the characters are acting properly. For the time being, anyway. I would suggest it for anyone that's been tired of how mediocre the FF have been since Waid & Weiringo left the book.

Goon #22: The Goon is one of my favorite books of all time. It's hilariously funny, stunningly tragic, and all other kinds of nice things someone could say about a comic book. The newer issues, though, are losing something that I really loved about the earlier ones. Each issue is less and less self-contained, and I thought that was one of the real strengths of the book. I trust Powell to tell a good story, so I stand by the change, but I hope it helps the book more than it hurts it, and it could easily go either way.

Mighty Avengers #10: Although I thought that the first story arc on this series was mediocre at best, it seems that the story and art are simultaneously picking up. I like Cho fine on some things, but his superhero stuff bugs the crap out of me. Now that we have Bagley--a guy who seems to have a fair amount of love and hate each--the storytelling and the pacing has gotten better. It's probably due to the fact that Bendis and Bagely have been working together for 7 years and really know how to work together on things. Before this gets too long, suffice to say that if you hated the first story, give this one a try because it is different, and for the better.

They also need to catch the fuck up to Secret Invasion, which is simply stupid when you think about it.

The Last Defenders #1: "DEFENDERS--DEFENESTRATE!!"

Ahh, and I just put them all away, too.

Nova #11

To start off with, I've got to say, I absolutely love what Abnett and Lanning are doing with Marvel Cosmic. That said, they keep up the good work here, finally showing us the Phalanx homeworld. I've enjoyed the art through-out this series just as much. The beginning and the end of this specific issue had me highly interested. On the other hand, the middle of the issue seems a little too drawn out. Still a great book, although probably not an ideal jumping on point.

Annihilation: Conquest #5 of 6

Again. Love what Abnett and Lanning are doing here. They've even managed to turn Ultron, to me one of the dullest existing villains, into a character of interest. There's some cool scenes in here, and defining moments for a character or two. It's building up pretty well for #6 of 6.

And I love Groot.

Atomic Robo #6

I've loved this whole series, despite the fact that it's all been pretty disjoined. The issue itself is funny, although not as much so as a couple of the previous issues. It's also set up well for the next series, which will hopefully be an Ongoing, or at least last a bit longer than 6 issues.

Serenity #1 - I thought it was a decent start to the series, though I think if you're new to the world of Serenity you may be a bit lost as to who the characters. I don't know if that's a big problem though because most people picking this up will probably be fans anyway. It's good, but not as good as Buffy has been.

Casanova - came out last week, but I missed it and ooh, was this fun. Violent as all get out (with a title like "Fuck Shit Up" what would you expect?) and I really enjoy this series. Hopefully it won't be hurt by Fraction picking up so much more work over at Marvel.

Streets of Glory #4 - awesome wild west violence. I hope this turns into an ongoing series, or at least a series of minis.

Narcopolis #2 - I'm really like this so far, especially since it forces you to really pay attention to the dialogue since they are creating their own vocabulary. Fun and interesting stuff so far.

Empowered #3 - not my favorite volume so far, but still amusing. I'm a fan of Adam Warren's artwork so he's got me sold on that alone, though I really do prefer his pencils to the sharpie-inked pages in this volume.

B.P.R.D. 1946 #3 A solid, action-packed issue. The breakdowns are a bit disorienting at times but they don't get in the way of the story...

GUTSVILLE #3 Finally Spurrier and Irving are with us again, with a great issue. Some revelations about the past, some nice action and a lot of hallucinatory perambulations, courtesy of Irving's incredible artwork. This comic looks like Vandermeer and Mieville's novels read. Like the visual equivalent of a cross between Veniss Underground and Perdido Street Station. The language is imposing and evocative, textured and literary without being unnecessarily obtrusive. Great book.

Picked up Gutsville #3, and I'm glad to say it was worth the wait. The pace seems to have kicked up a gear, and the stakes have been raised for all concerned. The text story at the end of the issue is as entertaining as ever, and helps to add an extra depth to the main strip. This is a series that seems to have real potential for an extended run in the future - delays permitting!

FANTASTIC FOUR #555 - Millar's writing is starting to pick up steam. Hitch's work looks noticably better on this issue, too. Interesting to see how they solve the enormous problem at hand, or the majority of the Marvel universe will be fucked in ten years (though what's that in our real-world time, sixty years?).

PUNISHER #55 - Looks like Ennis is leaving this series in a blaze of glory. I really hope Marvel ends the book at #60. Any new writer they bring in will just feel like an imitator, and besides, this is Ennis' book, and his alone.

WOLVERINE #63 - Jason Aaron is the shit (though Garney's work should not go unmentioned).

Plus giving up Woods sweet covers would spoil it for me. Its a similar position I find myself in with Fables.

DMZ this week was a great little opener to a tale that I hope sees Matty getting a little more perspective on his position within the DMZ - thinking of this series as going the 60-100 issue distance is a lovely prospect as to what dark places Wood is going to lead his characters. Punisher #55 is a delightful read. I've grown used to consistent high-quality stuff from Garth Ennis. The dialogue is sharp, the plot is brilliantly developed, the excerpts of a book about Valley Forge are beautifully written, Nick Fury's guest appearance is great... only drawback is Goran Parlov's art: good artwork, but way below his excellent standards.

Streets of Glory #4 is fucking fantastic. Another great work by Ennis this month, with the same sharp dialogue, brilliantly developed plot AND with Mike Wolfer's excellent artwork. His visual storytelling is his greatest strenght, never leaving a doubt on what's going on in each panel. And there's some dazzling ones, especially the one where a certain character is gutshot or when one leaps over two others.

Thunderbolts #119 has the perfect balance of action and plot development. I love the things Osborn says while he's pissed off, and the action scenes are well-written by Warren and phenomenally drawn by Mike Deodato Jr., who, as usual, uses shadows gorgeously (notice how Samsom's fingers wrinkle his forehead when he fights back a telepathic attack). The double splash page with Swordman killing three enemies soldiers was a particularly nice touch.

Picked up the second Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse trade paperback, a saga fetchingly titled "It only hurts when I pee." The book made me laugh out loud a few times. And I dig Ben Templesmith's art. (Reminiscent of Sienkiewicz in the Elektra: Assassin days.) Fun stuff.

X-Factor # - I really enjoy this book, and love David's take on the characters. I love the humor aspect of the book. Strong Guy never fails to make me laugh. Not a fan of the returning villian, but we shall see how it's handled.

Wolverine #63 - Aaron continues to provide a good Wolvie. I Loved the in jokes about Wolverine being on the team of the week and seeming to be everywhere.

Locke and Key #2- The first issue was great, the second issue was better. Loving the pacing of the story and the main characters. I must say it's my favorite book of the week.

Fantastic Foour #555 - I'm torn. I think I liked issue 554 better than this issue. It felt like it lost steam to me from one issue to the next. I think a rereading is in order.

I had my last week comics late and I don't understant warrenellis review on Echo by Terry Moore.
first of all buy a comicbook made by a guy whose work you never liked is a mystery to me. secondly the art is not professionnal on the firt ten pages? buy a new pair of eyes, this is as beautiful as SIP was.
finally Terry Moore has difficulties to be a Sf writer? I'm sorry but I'm lost with this one too. this is a first issue, a very quiet and slow paced one, ok, but I think that this is too a good introduction of the main character, there is good action and so far the plot seems interesting.

DMZ 29 reminded me how much I love the book. The single issues were a bit hit and miss for me as they came out (better read again later mind you) but this one instantly grabbed my interest. I like how things are coming together and now we know the major players we get what is happening by a brief refrence. The world is more real now. And the ending exchange was perfect with Matty's only response being "Shit!" over and over.

The second Wormwood trade (whch I had no damn clue was even coming out until earlier this week) was oh so damn funny. When I stop to think about the book, really not much feels to be happening. Things go to shit, some big explosions happen on tentacle monsters and things are fixed. But the hell if I can't stop reading it and anticipating the next trade. My favorite part of the book was the single story at the end about the four horseman, Wormwood telling everyone he had just saved the world by talking on the phone and no one believing him was great.

Serenity 1 felt like part of an episode up until the first commercial break. Interested how them being rich will change things, I mean we know it will go to shit but how? Just like the Buffy books it's for those of us who just want more of our dearly departed show.

Screamland 1 is interesting, Frankenstein's monster as a dried up movie actor. Really the next issue will decide whether or not I stick around. I'm left a bit muddled on how I feel about the issue as a whole.

I've read the first issue of Young Liars by Dave Lapham. I'm not totally convinced, it seems very hard these days to make a punchy first comic book in an ongoing series, but I don't want to be too hard with Lapham, there are many goods things in this new gig. an interesting cast of characters well exposed, a good storytelling, the guy has experience in that field and you can see it at every panel, and the art is gorgeous, as always with him. but I don't know, maybe I have difficulties with the kind of character he writes here : this kick ass, amazing, I don't care about life because i'm going to die girl. this is borderline at best, I don't know if it will be interesting after a few issues.

another great read was Palookaville #19 by Seth. the guy loves Chris Ware and his work, you can tell, and this is the kind of influence I like in an artist. the story seems at first a little boring, a middle aged guy is depressed by the departure of his mother in a retirement house, but after 20 pages of reading you can see a great tale of simple things, very sensitive stuff, he explains every details in his mother room, and the connection with his past is very well written, like the madeleine de Proust.
thank you drawn and quaterly, and thank you Seth!
